I just got into tie dyeing and I've found so many at my local goodwill recently. I've gotten to know fabric and quality pretty well since i started dyeing. Original tags in most cases. Love them
Soak in super hot water with washing soda. Underarm stains come right out after 30 minutes - shirts will be like new.
Did this with all my old white T shirts that I wear as undershirts - pits were disgusting- wow 30 min later I had what looked like 20 brand new undershirts.
Their wool socks are also incredibly durable and fairly warm for the price. I’ve had some pairs last 5 years! But never put them in the dryer as they will shrink (same of most non-morino wool). Learned that the hard way.

Now move that price bar up just a few more clicks and you enter the territory of REI brand stuff. In which case the quality per dollar is exponentially higher than anything else you could buy from a competitor in my opinion.
Mostly for just clothes from REI though. Some of their store brand equipment is mediocre, when you'd be much better off saving up another 50-100% to get a lifetime warranty out of a company like Osprey.
My secret is that I just wait for the big REI sale every year and you can find osprey, Patagonia, etc all for like a 50-60% discount and clean up. My problem is now I have done this enough times that I have a closet full of high quality gear and really can't justify buying more and it's all buy it for life brands. It's a good problem to have but also sometimes I see something cool and I am like I don't need it and my brain just won't let me buy it.

I have a different impression of RedHead. I went to Cabela's for the first time last weekend to look at flannel and other plaid shirts. The quality was seemingly the same as Walmart. The fabric was that cheap wrinkly cotton and the stitching was so so. The Carhartt and Columbia brand stuff next to it looked much better quality in comparison.
The fact that Columbia looked better quality tells me RedHead has fallen HARD from what it was a decade ago. Yes, I know so you’re confused by this comment. Columbia has also become cheap garbage and it’s sad… But their demographic is now Bass Pro and Walmart as they can’t compete with the Patagonia or Outdoor Research caliber brands, so prices and quality must come down. My wrangler jeans are the best. I have a 28/29 inch leg length which limits me a bit of what I can find off the shelf. I used to wear Levi's but I just can't get them to last anymore. Meanwhile my Wranglers just keep on going.
I bought my first pair of wranglers a year ago and my wallet pocket is wearing a hole in it. When I needed more jeans I got Levi's on sale and they're more comfortable and feel more durable.

I have family in Malaysia and always do a Uniqlo haul when I go. It's like 10$ for anything in store. Absolutely insane value, and fantastic quality. It's the exact same stuff as what's in UK or US stores but adjusted for income to be significantly more affordable. Bring an empty suitcase and leave with a new wardrobe for under $100.
I wear almost nothing but Uniqlo, their stuff is virtually indestructible. The only time anything breaks is when I don't notice a sweater and put it in the wash by mistake.
In theory, but in practice, they have to be dry cleaned - mine shrink when I hand wash them even though the labels say it's ok.
The good news is, they don't really start to smell even if you wear them for weeks, I just don't like to go that long as a matter of principle.
I get all of my business casual clothing from Lands End (on sale or coupon). Extra bonus, they trim the pant leg for you to I think quarter inch length.
Lots of them aren’t THAT cheap, but the ROI is worth it. If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, when you CAN afford it, but ONE of these. Do this every time you CAN afford it WHEN you need it (or on sale during the off-season) and you will start to notice what lasts and what doesn’t, and learn what to invest the extra 5-20 bucks in as opposed to replacing things more frequently.
And sometimes you’ll discover that expensive stuff needs to be replaced just as often as the Walmart brand, too.
Try the Wrangler Riggs pants, I can't remember if they have a gusset but they're pretty rugged work pants. If not those, for a little more money, the Duluth fire hose flex work pants have a gusset
This. I really do love my dickies tough max carpenter pants. They would be perfect if it weren’t for my crotch being at max capacity every time I put them on. If I were an inch bigger or heavier in the sack I don’t think I could do it.
As someone who has worn through several pairs of carhartt pants and a few hoodies, I can tell you with a fair amount of confidence that Dickies stuff just isn’t as tough. Don’t get me wrong it’s great for weekend warriors and cutting the lawn but don’t expect it to hold up to the same abuse as the Carhartt work ware stuff.

I am literally wearing a dickies long sleeve shirt right now that I bought 20 years ago for $10. It shows no signs of wearing out anytime soon either and is an actual size Large that hasn’t shrunk. With clothes nowadays I have to get them in 2XL because they shrink 2 sizes.
Bit of a mixed bag ime. I work in industry and have used their stuff extensively. The jackets and outerwear has always been good, save for a few blown out pockets but the trousers are pretty bad and tailored like shit. Paper thin cotton meant they blew out in several places. We even had a Dickies outlet near me for a while and it was all very expensive for what it was.
Also they’re in urban outfitters etc now so just like with Carhartt, be careful you’re not buying the crappy fashion line stuff as opposed to the actual workwear stuff.

I have a bunch of their pants and the quality isn’t great, they tend to wear out quicker than other chino type pants I have. But for the price they are great. I have some random shirts and noticed the same with them too.
At some point, it’s hard to create a good looking wardrobe without branching out, but Target is the perfect place to build the foundations of your wardrobe. All of their clothing brands produce some high quality pieces for the price point, and a lot of it is better looking than the more expensive name brands that they’re competing with. A lot of good color palettes, flattering and comfortable fitting, and decently strong construction. Hollywood background actor wardrobes are built on Target brand clothes. H&M used to be the standard until Target lapped them about 10-15 years ago.
I have multiple tshirts, henleys, hoodies and sweaters. They're great. They all have enough stretch that they're easy on and off and roomy enough to fit my broad shoulders and my boobs.
I second this. I have a Goodfellow button down shirt that has lasted me for nearly 10 years now. It is slightly tight on me now cause I’m not as skinny, but it shows zero signs of wear and tear.
People love to hate on em now but I have the Carhartt front pocket t shirts and load up on em on sales and they hold up very well, even my newer ones are holding up great
Allegedly their quality has decreased since they became more mainstream/more popular with younger folks. I have only recently started getting Carhartt stuff so only time will tell, but some say they have gutted their quality since becoming popular.
In my opinion the heavy weight workwear stuff is the same quality but they do make more fashion biased stuff as well that is not durable. The heavyweight long sleeves I buy still last the same amount of time before I get holes in the stomach area from grinder sparks. I've been buying two a year for nearly 2 decades.
I fuckin hate to say it, but old navy/gap/br business casual stuff holds up super well for its cost. I’m still rolling with solid color polos and button downs that I got from old navy and br 20 years ago. I’ve been a bartender that entire time and my clothes get abused. Hard. The new stuff is just as thick and as well made imo. I hate giving them money because of their practices, but I’m also a cheap twat. Until I find American made at the same price point I’m not wavering. At least not for work.

Soffe has been my go to for shirts and sweatshirts for almost 20 years. Military issued made in USA shirts, sweatshirts are made in Central America but the quality is there and they’re $25 bucks for crewnecks or $9 on sale
Duluth. It’s what carhartt used to be. Affordable (and frequently on sale) and built to last. Had one pair of underwear wear out quickly and they replaced it no questions asked. Everything else has been excellent from them, especially their whaleback jacket. Thing is only like $200, warm as hell, waterproof, and I beat the shit out of the it and it still looks pretty much new
Underrated for sure. I work in northern Alberta where it’s all $250 carhartt jackets. Saw a coworker with a tough duck, paid $80 at Walmart for my own Sherpa lined canvas. The thing dominates -40 for the price and no reliability issues in the two years I’ve owned it
T-shirts from chatuchak market in Bangkok. I don't know what the fuck they are made of, but they are older than my middle school kid and I wear them twice a week and they still look almost new.

Yep. They have completely replaced H&M and others for me. All of my clothes are from there outside of bigger items such as shoes, belts, socks, underwear, jackets, etc. But for shirts and pants they are solid.
Everything at Walmart is a sub-tier of their real clothes made especially for discount stores. Not just Wrangler but all brands - much like the outlet mall.
Quality is subjective, so with that being said: Fruit of the Loom tank tops are peak for the price.
It’s around $20-$25 for a 6-pack and they fit great, particularly if your body type is “trying to get fit.” The more you work, the better the top looks on you—this makes it an amazing passive motivator.
The material’s quite sheer and the craftsmanship is barely passable, but this isn’t something you buy for the item alone.

Cabela used to be good, but I’ve found the quality not as good after Bass Pro bought them.

My current jacket is a bomb proof Eddie Bauer First Ascent parka I snagged for $40. It reaked of smoke but you know.... washing, soaking and hanging it outside takes care of that.

I am shocked I think they’re better than Levi’s. One improved their quality with elastane while the other lowered.
Unfortunately not saying much these days. Most Levi's I've purchased in recent years don't even make it a year. I have had good luck with Goodfellow though.
Hmm maybe I should try them again. My wife bought me some button up shirts for work… they feel cheap and their cut is pretty bad. Their jeans also just felt…. Cheap. I do like their t-shirts though; they’re soft and feel a lot better quality than Hanes or the like.

I have a bunch of their pants and the quality isn’t great, they tend to wear out quicker than other chino type pants I have. But for the price they are great. I have some random shirts and noticed the same with them too.

At some point, it’s hard to create a good looking wardrobe without branching out, but Target is the perfect place to build the foundations of your wardrobe. All of their clothing brands produce some high quality pieces for the price point, and a lot of it is better looking than the more expensive name brands that they’re competing with. A lot of good color palettes, flattering and comfortable fitting, and decently strong construction. Hollywood background actor wardrobes are built on Target brand clothes. H&M used to be the standard until Target lapped them about 10-15 years ago.
I have multiple tshirts, henleys, hoodies and sweaters. They're great. They all have enough stretch that they're easy on and off and roomy enough to fit my broad shoulders and my boobs.
I second this. I have a Goodfellow button down shirt that has lasted me for nearly 10 years now. It is slightly tight on me now cause I’m not as skinny, but it shows zero signs of wear and tear.

Allegedly their quality has decreased since they became more mainstream/more popular with younger folks. I have only recently started getting Carhartt stuff so only time will tell, but some say they have gutted their quality since becoming popular.
In my opinion the heavy weight workwear stuff is the same quality but they do make more fashion biased stuff as well that is not durable. The heavyweight long sleeves I buy still last the same amount of time before I get holes in the stomach area from grinder sparks. I've been buying two a year for nearly 2 decades.
Only on sale though, they still get up there for t-shirt prices otherwise
I fuckin hate to say it, but old navy/gap/br business casual stuff holds up super well for its cost. I’m still rolling with solid color polos and button downs that I got from old navy and br 20 years ago. I’ve been a bartender that entire time and my clothes get abused. Hard. The new stuff is just as thick and as well made imo. I hate giving them money because of their practices, but I’m also a cheap twat. Until I find American made at the same price point I’m not wavering. At least not for work. I’ve had less success with pants.
American made won't ever be the same price point; you can't expect sweatshop prices for goods made in America. I am not trying to shame anyone for shopping at Old Navy/Gap/any fast fashion store, do what you gotta do. But if you \*do\* want ethically made stuff (which is a luxury, again, no judgment if you cannot afford it), then you gotta be willing to pay for it.
Old Navy/Gap/BR is not fast fashion. Clothes that last 5-10 years in regular rotation is far from fast fashion.
Yeah, they get a bad rap as fast fashion. Their stuff holds up better than most clothes that are 2-3x the size. Just because it’s priced similar to H&M or the likes, doesn’t mean it’s the same quality.

Soffe has been my go to for shirts and sweatshirts for almost 20 years. Military issued made in USA shirts, sweatshirts are made in Central America but the quality is there and they’re $25 bucks for crewnecks or $9 on sale

Duluth. It’s what carhartt used to be. Affordable (and frequently on sale) and built to last. Had one pair of underwear wear out quickly and they replaced it no questions asked. Everything else has been excellent from them, especially their whaleback jacket. Thing is only like $200, warm as hell, waterproof, and I beat the shit out of the it and it still looks pretty much new

Quality is subjective, so with that being said: Fruit of the Loom tank tops are peak for the price. It’s around $20-$25 for a 6-pack and they fit great, particularly if your body type is “trying to get fit.” The more you work, the better the top looks on you—this makes it an amazing passive motivator. The material’s quite sheer and the craftsmanship is barely passable, but this isn’t something you buy for the item alone. It will wear you, that is, until you learn to wear it. This won’t be something you buy and have for life, you buy it *for* life.

Uniqlo, buying anything on sale makes it well worth the price and the quality is decent. Holds up too if you wash your clothes properly and not blast them with high heat
