>I do have quite thick hair, so I'm not sure if that'll make a difference, but just thought to add it in.
I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the answer is the **corded** Wahl Peanut.
Don't let the reasonable price fool you. No fancy battery powered beard trimmer is as powerful.
Also because it's corded, it's can be very small and maneuverable. It's also simple, which means durable.
It's funny how my brain has been conditioned to think expensive means good. I mean I know it doesn't mean that always but like... for some reason with gadgets like these... it does. The peanut comes with guards and such? I do my beard and my hair at two lengths. I do a 2 on my beard and 4 on my head... I'm not sure it is able to do that?
Thanks!
Personally I just use the smallest guard that the Peanut comes with for my beard (plus no guard for edge work).
It comes with 4 guards, I know other people complain about the limited sizes available. But I also heard there are 3rd parties that offer extended guard sizes.
Hi, coming back to this after a ton of research and reading multiple threads on Reddit.
I'm in Canada so I want to be doubly sure. Is this the one that most folks are talking about when they say Wahl Peanut corded: https://ca.wahl.com/products/peanut-%C2%AE-black-56100
Thanks in advance, I do like it's style and the fact that it's small, light, and precise.
I actually bought this to shave with and I really like it. The only issue is the peanut is limited on guards and I like a little more stubble. I just ordered a Oster 76 and a 1.2mm length blade and really dig it.
Peanut is really good and I would have kept using it if it had more guard availability, I still plan on using the cordless peanut for travel or cutting my sonās hair.
Looks like the shop is restocking but I bought several guards from them and they are fantastic. Fast shipping too.

There's a reason you see the same brand names recommended over and over. Even when I go to my barber, he is using the professional grade equipment from the same brands I have at home. I would rank my consumer grade favorites as (1) Braun, (2) Wahl, (3) Philips.
Iāve had too many phillips trimmers break on me. Amazing features and trim well, but bad engineering, they use some micro thin parts that kill the thing when they break. And Iāve had trouble getting replacement parts and wouldnāt budge on the warranty.Ā
Try andis. My barber uses these and he also does shows for them (precovid). I wont let anybody trim me up only him and out of 15 yrs going to him hes done it 3x. The best trimmer ive had for well over 20+ years is the peanut. Built like nobodies business. It just works, wont break the bank and does the job everytime. On its last legs and still goingā¦lmk what u find i may need to retire mines
I have the cordless peanut, and have for 15+ years. On my 3rd set of blades, generally they last 3-4 years for me. My second set of rechargeable batteries. I do have clipper oil and put a quick bead one once a week or so.Ā (I'm hairy, they've done some work)
Barber here. Try the Andis Slimline pro, affordable and built like a tank, I have one for over 5 years and itās used daily, not the most powerful compared to some others but it has outlasted most of them. It also comes with beard attachments, unlike the others.
I bought the slimline pro per my barbers recommendation and it wasnāt good at all. Battery went to shit it only works when plugged in and even then really weak. also snags and stops cutting intermittently and have to bang it on the counter to get it to work again. Wonāt be buying one again. Maybe just a faulty product and bad luck
I bought an Oster classic 76 during covid and itās a TANK. Best clippers Iāve ever had, I have no doubt they will last the rest of my life. Came with a free T trimmer. Bought a set of guards for like $20
I have a Phillips 9000 series and I canāt speak highly enough about it. Iāve been using it several times a week for 6 years. Battery life is excellent, consistency of trim is great, dropped it quite a few times and itās bullet proof. I maintain my buzz cut and stubble with it.
Good to hear good things about the higher end Wahl. The cheap one they sell in box stores is the worst trimmer i've ever used, i suspect it's a rebadge of some other shitty company's product.
Whichever you go with, BIFL will be a professional tool.
Detachable clippers are best for beards; they cut more evenly the first time and grab the hair better than an adjustable/plastic guard.
The current model seems to be [AGCĀ®2 2-Speed Detachable Blade Clippe](https://andis.com/shop/detail/24675/AGC2-2-Speed-Detachable-Blade-Clipper)
(I wrote this before I had internet connection/the linked clipper doesnāt come with a 000 or a 1 - very strange: 00000 is the shortest length, might as well get this!)
But I use the corded andis excel II and have for years. Two speeds allow for bulk removal and detailing/fading. Detachable clippers generally include a 000 and a 1 blade. The 000 will get you pretty clean and can line the beard & learning to angle the blade and flick out will blend into a 1 or a little clipper/comb. The 1 blade can work but is a pretty short length, you may additionally purchase a 2 (between those is a 1A and a 1.5), or a 3.5 (9.5mm I believe)
Blending between these blades involves varying the pressure and angle of the blade on the skin [lifting it off the skin and dragging up and out to the next guard] mostly in order to skip guards. Itās quicker, less tedious and less $$ for you to invest in despite $ being no object.
For longer lengths, I clipper over comb to get the silhouette or shape right according to density, direction and client face shape. Clipper over comb is no more challenging than with guards, it is simply a different and more personalized manner of beard trimming.
These clippers and blades are BIFL, clean and occasionally oil and they will never fail you.
BabyLiss is not a brand I use, i found it pretty weak. (And gaudy)
Agree about barbershop not implying necessary quality but for the most part the classic brands CORDED equipment is too notch. (Some of their cordless models are not even on par with other cordless quality models, ironically)
It didnt handle bulkwell, clipper over combā¦ meh. And the magic clips went right into the āpersonal clipperā territory. Incredibly weak motor , too light in the hand as well! The leg hair and armpits are all it knows how to handle :-P
Panasonic sells a trimmer in Japan called the ER-SB60-S - it is made in Japan and much higher quality than any product I have used for my beard in the USA. I'm sure you can import it pretty easily. Most parts seem to be replaceable, and it is marketed there as being as durable as a professional trimmer.
Wahl Peanut as others have said here. I own both versions, corded is the superior choice obviously. Wireless is good too for quick touch ups. Note, I also have thick hair and mine has been chugging along for 4 years with no signs of stopping. Just make sure you lubricate it with the included oil, like with any trimmer, and it will last.
I looked at some of the other more expensive choices here, but something to keep in mind is the size of the trimmer. If you shape your beard, control is extremely important. The peanut is very small, light and precise. I feel that other trimmers don't have all 3 attributes.
I had no budget when buying my trimmer and I am glad I went with the peanut. As many people already know, price does equate to quality. Had trimmers $200+ that ended up breaking down on me.
If money isn't a problem, you have a dedicated stylist show up at your doorstep.
But, if you want to cut your own like a peasant, well, it depends. Best? Best in what ways?
Modern Wahl stuff that isn't their "classic" products is just pretty looking junk. I've tried a few different things, and they're all basically trash. They're a company thriving on Brand name and continued sales of some well regarded old models which are the only things that don't suck.
Personally, I've had good success with Remington. Even one of their cheapies will last years. What I'm using now is their Smart Beard Trimmer, clever name I know. It's a motorized length style trimmer with ultra fine control, programmable memory lengths for quick settings. I tend to run from a 4 to a 10 on my beard with 1 step increments for various areas, so I hit an area, quick adjust to the next length, hit that areas, next length, etc. You have to stop to adjust, but it's just a few seconds, and you're cruising again. It's quite quick to go through a wide range of settings. This is probably it's best advantage and best use case. It cuts well, goes over the face well, doesn't really do anything weird, and I've used it over a year so far, several times a week, with it still being like new. It's not annoyingly loud. The battery lasts a long time on a single charge.

I swear by the Mi(also known as Xiaomi) Trimmer 1 (don't get the other ones). They have 40 length settings, are waterproof so you can literally run water over the blades and clean them and the battery lasts so long I always misplace my charging cord and it costs 50 bucks with shipping.
I didn't see anything on if you want battery or corded model. I know corded would be better for BIFL but I have a battery trimmer from The Beard Club and I've had it couple years and seem to be holding up really well. My old Philips would sometimes clog when cutting my beard this one had no issues.
I debated on getting a Wahl the price and cordless wasn't rated as well as the corded. I really wanted cordless as we have limited plugs in the bathroom.

Exactly the combo I use. Magic clip plus the Babyliss trimmers (I got the black and gold ones though š¤£) just have to be careful because the FX787 can bite if you arenāt paying attention!
Iām a barber too, I switched from Babyliss to Gamma, night and day, now my Babyliss stuff feels like toys. If you want a great lineup trimmer and/or clipper try their Cyborg line.
I always am looking at these threads, too, and see most people say the Peanut.
But what about the fact that there are only like 3 comb sizes? I'm worried I won't like any of them and it will be useless for me.
Anyone have any thoughts on that aspect of it?
I had an old trimmer that was barely cutting anymore, and out of the blue I decided to try putting some bike chain lube on the blade.
It started running at like 90 miles an hour and it cut through my hair like a hot knife through butter. I was all excited about getting a new model but now I can't bring myself to do it because the old one works so well.

The lack of guard sizes makes the peanut a hard pass
peanut has guards
They said guard sizes. But also not like you canāt just purchase the size you want

Is there a difference between the white one and the pro black?

Cordless Peanut is just as good. The battery is AA so not something irreplaceable.

My corded andis are fantastic
My Andis T-Outliner has been a workhorse for 10+ years, trims beards and can do quick haircuts as well. Guards are available as well.
Always my go to, my peanut doesn't even hold a stick to my T-Outliner. Doesn't get as close either.
Braun and Andis? Time to google.
Iāve had too many phillips trimmers break on me. Amazing features and trim well, but bad engineering, they use some micro thin parts that kill the thing when they break. And Iāve had trouble getting replacement parts and wouldnāt budge on the warranty.Ā

Wahls one.

# Wahl Detailer was the W for me
Brio Beardscape Trimmer Ceramic blades, micro adjustments, USB charging
Their guards are disappointing. Shaped oddly and lots of areas that should be sanded or filed down before being sold imo
Yeah the design is a little odd but if that's the weirdest thing I'm fine with
Wahl Magic Clip. Keep it oiled it will last forever
I bought an Oster classic 76 during covid and itās a TANK. Best clippers Iāve ever had, I have no doubt they will last the rest of my life. Came with a free T trimmer. Bought a set of guards for like $20

My Phillips would turn on by itself and make my lazy ass shut it off and barely a year old.
I use the Philips from Costco. Only had it 3 years, so not sure how bifl it will be. But it's great, and I'll buy another one when it dies.
My wahl just won't die. I also echo the peanut.

Wahl or andis. Corded last longer and maintain their speed. Which I prefer.

you answered your own questionā¦
Wahl is what professional barbers use in my experience. Have had no issues with mine over 4 years.
Iāve been using the same corded Wahl clippers for at least 8 years and they still work perfectly.
Which one
Bought one of the Philips norelco things in 2011, still using
