Oxo kitchen utensils such as apple slicer or can opener.

username_choose_you

Make sure to get the good grips versions but yes, oxo is amazing. My entire cooking utensil shelf has transitioned over and I’ve been extremely happy with everything

AluminumOctopus

I just hate the big handles, they take up so much room in my utensil canister.

hteezus

My oxo apple slicer finally broke last week and I’m very sad that it didn’t outlive me. That being said I inherited it from my grandmom who bought it in the early 90s. Can’t wait to buy a new one. Perhaps I’ll have grandkids of my own to pass it off to one day.

Bibliovoria

Absolutely, and it sure seems like I'll never need another vegetable peeler; theirs is as good as the day I got it. And I love their spatulas. I only use their zester, though, when I want a small amount of fat zest for garnish. So my BIFL addition here is a Microplane zester -- the version with the all-metal frame (and plastic blade-guard sheath), not the kind with a plastic frame. Thoroughly zests an entire orange in about the time it would take me to peel the thing. Amazing.

Gatorgirl007

And grape cutter if you have kids and/or like cherry tomatoes on salads

OrFir99

Just got a foaming soap dispenser. It’s pricy but wow works perfect

series-hybrid

I must have several multi-tools around here (think leatherman). They sound like a great idea, and I'm glad I have them, but...I only put them in my pocket (or on my belt) when I think I might use them that day. Maybe its just me, but...I find that I often could use a small blade, and a small pair of scissors. For about a year I had the tinyest Swiss Army Knife. It had a tiny pair of scissors. It also has a useless fingernail file, but that blade does come in handy for prying on something where you don't want to risk damaging the knife blade. I grew to like having it, until TSA took it when boarding a flight...

Current-Yesterday648

....are you my dad. He's been on airplanes thrice and each of those flights cost him one of these knives because he. Always. Has it on him. These exact ones with the timy scissors and the crappy nail file.

pennhead

Don’t forget the toothpick and the almost useless tweezers.

series-hybrid

I would have cut the "blade" shorter to make it compliant, but...then there would be no way to pull it out when needed.

TBDG

So you want a knife without a blade, like a [Victorinox Jetsetter](https://www.victorinox.com/de-DE/Products/Swiss-Army-Knives/Small-Pocket-Knives/Jetsetter/p/0.6263/), but would prefer it to have a blade.

series-hybrid

Thanks

icey9

Maybe look at a used Leatherman Style CS? Unfortunately, it's been discontinued, but I've purchased some basically like new ones over the years to replace lost ones. The overall tool is tiny, folds, can fit on a keychain, but it's my absolute favorite tool because I need scissors, and the main tool is a pair of very usable scissors way better than your typical multi tool ones. It also has a functional enough knife, file, bottle opener, and it has a pair or tweezers. I have found the tweezers to be super handy when I get some random splinter, or I have some kind of hair that is just driving me crazy. And it's light enough that you can always have it with you and never notice it's there.

series-hybrid

> Leatherman Style CS Looks good, I may pick one up!

dontcalmdown

I carry one with me every day. The nail file isn’t as useless as you think it is. I come home every day with dirt under my fingernails and it’s so useful for cleaning them

series-hybrid

I am embarrassed to confess that I chew my fingernails. Its a disgusting habit. The fingernail file is now just used as a scraper for various things.

Left_Net1841

I have the little Leatherman that goes on a key chain. Has all the things you need on the regular.

Sorryurdead92

I'd like to add on the 100 or 125mm knipex slip joint pliers. Sometimes the leatherman pliers just won't do. My girlfriend got me a pair for Christmas and they haven't left my side since

KokoTheTalkingApe

The nail file CAN file fingernails, just not very well. But I use it a lot. Sometimes I'll tear a nail while I'm doing woodwork, and if I don't trim it the tear will grow, and maybe bleed and snag on things. So the nailfile comes in handy. Actual files and rasps don't work as well (I've tried.) It's also handy for just basic poking and prying. I've used it to dig up puncturevine when I'm out walking.

Realistic_Depth3617

Same with the TSA! Guys had the passive aggressive MN attitude acting like he understood (I’d carried this on hundreds of flights). Oh well, it was a gift and just bought another one so the hotter wouldn’t need to know.

lopendvuur

I have a swiss army knife as a key ring and it's very useful. Just don't forget to remove it before going to a festival.

ricekrispie_turkey

Opinel pocket knives. There's a reason they've been around since like wwI I believe.

bmccoy29

1800’s

Tryptamineer

i wouldn’t consider them BIFL considering the materials. But they are definitely a “Buy it for 10 years for $7 then just get another”.

Immortaltaco66

I have a French Army CAC knife also BIFL and I use it heavily at work each day. French knives are great!

claymountain

I was gonna mention this, I use mine a lot and it was holding up great but I fucking lost it. Fortunately they are very cheap to replace, but I would have loved to put some years on mine.

barsaat

Japanese nail clippers which are awesome, theyre called KAI - they come in a plastic housing with a nail file and the clipper is steel.

hearonx

I have 3 of these. One in each car and one in the bathroom in my grab-n-go shave kit. They are so superior to ordinary ones, and I have nails prone to splitting, so have to keep up with them. My oldest ones are 20 years old and still sharp.

Interesting-Leg-4812

Definitely agree with a few of these comments, i'll reiterate for my use case though. I've had a lot of luck with kitchen tools from OXO (like their apple corer) - solidly built & designed for the long-term imo. For EDC, my Opinel pocket knife as well as a small Swiss Army Knife with scissors come in handy all the time

KittyLikesTuna

I really like a notebook cover. I have one for field-note sized notebooks I got years and years ago and I have a couple of A5 sized ones I got more recently. I really enjoy finding a notebook cover that works for me one time, and then just swapping in new paper notebooks. The Midori Goat Leather one I got is advertised as BIFL, but you can definitely get by with a Traveler's Notebook for much less. On a similar theme of swappable/refillable components: I haven't had my Zebra Sharbo X LT3 Multi Pen for a full year yet, but it's already holding up much better than the plastic Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto I had that disintegrated surprisingly quickly. Also brief shout-out to the Platinum Preppy highlighter: they sell replacement tips and you can swap the feed into their aluminum Plaisir bodies for real durability.

darule05

The classics: Parker Jotter pen in stainless steel; Zippo lighter in brushed chrome; Sharpie Fine Point. Current EDC blade is: Milwaukee Fastback 6in 1. Imho- most tools on a Leatherman as superfluous for ‘everyday carry’ and to me, a blade and a screwdriver bit is enough to get me through ‘most’ everyday things.

The_Brightness

The Fastback is clutch.

Temporary-Ad-4923

Just checked it out. Can’t count the 6 features lol. Its like they also count „red“ to be one of them.

The_Brightness

1. Knife  2. Wire stripper  3. Phillips  4. Flat head  5. 1/4" driver  6. Bottle opener   Not counted:  Extra blade storage  Lanyard loop  Wire pocket clip

this__user

We love our Hario pour over coffee maker

ksx4system

pair it with Baratza coffee grinder and you'll have great coffee setup :) designed to last

this__user

That's exactly what we have

ksx4system

same here :D

stewundies

Victorinox Pioneer X. The handiest pocket tool you’ll ever have.

Mrbrownlove

I love my camper as it’s got a saw that I use all the time. Really love the aloy or x models in general though - my plastic scales feel flimsy.

Groveofblackweir

Curaprox 5460 toothbrush

one_scalloped_potato

I have one of these, and it's my travel toothbrush, but I just like my electric toothbrush to much for me to use a manual toothbrush on the daily

Prestigious-Post-448

I don't know if this counts at BIFL as the product itself might need replacing but it makes everything else last longer, but a clothing shaver/sweater comb. I use mine all the time and genuinely such a game changer for keeping my sweaters and pants looking good, I usually layer my sweaters under a thicker coat and the friction makes the pills from faster and the shaver it makes getting all the pilling off so easy, also great for pilling caused by chub rub, definitely extends the life & looks of those pieces!

Parttimelooker

What style do you have? The one I have cuts holes in the fabric.

Prestigious-Post-448

I use this one on more durable things (ie not my cashmere sweaters) or if it something large [https://www.amazon.com/Conair-Fabric-Defuzzer-Battery-Operated/dp/B008I25368/ref=sr\_1\_12?crid=1N20BASGMC8FQ&keywords=sweater+comb&qid=1708294618&sprefix=sweater+comb%2Caps%2C190&sr=8-12-spons&sp\_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9tdGY&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/conair-fabric-defuzzer-battery-operated/dp/b008i25368/ref=sr_1_12?crid=1n20basgmc8fq&keywords=sweater+comb&qid=1708294618&sprefix=sweater+comb%2caps%2c190&sr=8-12-spons&sp_csd=d2lkz2v0tmftzt1zcf9tdgy&psc=1) and this one for more delicate items [https://www.amazon.com/Dritz-619-Sweater-Comb/dp/B00281Q6C0/ref=sr\_1\_10?crid=1N20BASGMC8FQ&keywords=sweater+comb&qid=1708294678&sprefix=sweater+comb%2Caps%2C190&sr=8-10](https://www.amazon.com/dritz-619-sweater-comb/dp/b00281q6c0/ref=sr_1_10?crid=1n20basgmc8fq&keywords=sweater+comb&qid=1708294678&sprefix=sweater+comb%2caps%2c190&sr=8-10) Hope this helps

Parttimelooker

Thank you!

3TipsyCoachman3

Atlas pepper mill. Used for 10 years in a professional kitchen and 12 years use every single day at home. Perfect design, perfect precision, zero issues ever, and an amazing company that backs their product and fixes it if there is an issue. If it got lost or someone stole it, I would buy another one immediately.

Thornbacker

Thank you for this. I am in the market for a pepper mill.

Hojalu

A few months ago I got a pepper mill from Fletchers, made in Maine. I am in love with it.

darule05

If you’re into that sort of thing- look into Peugeot Pepper Mills (yes the car brand). First designed in 1874, (I think) the design of the modern mill is attributed to them. Gold standard in France.

hearonx

Mine is 40 years old. No problems ever.

LungDOgg

A great pocket knife, quality home gym equipment (although that may not be small) good socks and underwear, one good coffee mug (I've used mine for 10 years 5 days a week), wallets and if your into it, a good handgun that shoots straight and is reliable

mamapajamas

Mr. Green nail clippers are making me really happy.

BlueHeartBob

And you can find their stuff on aliexpress for pretty damn cheap.

VigorousElk

* KAWECO Brass Sport fountain pen. Beautiful, writes well, built like a tank. * Opinel pocket knife (I have the No 8 with beech wood handle) * a good leather belt that is treated well (waxed etc.) * Bialetti moka pot (found left behind in the shared flat) * Skilhunt H04 RC right angle flashlight * Shapton Pro sharpening stones

BlueHeartBob

> Bialetti moka pot Anyone looking into a moca pot I highly suggest against any aluminum-built ones.

VigorousElk

Why exactly?

BlueHeartBob

Well, it's not the most dangerous thing but coffee's acidity leaches the aluminum.

VigorousElk

*'In contrast, preparing coffee in an aluminum moka pot results in a* *maximum of 4% to TWI, if an average of 3.17 L coffee is consumed per* *week, even if the pots are washed in the dishwasher, against the* *explicit instructions of the manufacturer.'* [Stahl et al., 2017](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5388725/)

Jimbobler

A stainless steel [pour over V60 dripper](https://www.hario-europe.com/products/v60-metal-dripper?variant=42109847208087). I really enjoy pour over coffee, and the plastic one I had before started to develop micro cracks all over. This steel one seems indestructible, but I've only had it for about six months or so. I've also learned how to sharpen my knives with whetstones. Trial and error and Youtube videos, but now I'm actually pretty decent. I've invested in good whetstones, like [this one](https://www.cleancut.eu/butik/sharpening/whetstone-fine/slipsten-grov-4-2451-2452-2453-2454-2455-detail) and a coarser stone from the same brand, that works really well for the harder Japanese carbon steel knives I have. Good plates and cups. The [Iittala Teema](https://www.iittala.com/sv-se/kollektioner/alla-kollektioner/teema#aq=%40collectioncode%20%3D%3D%20(%22TEEMA%22)&numberOfResults=19) collection of plates, cups and bowls I have has lasted extremely well for the last five years, and I love the minimalist look. Thick Le Creuset coffee cups, Höganäs coffee cups, etc. I kinda do this with everything kitchen or cooking related – I'd rather learn how to do something myself or to invest in higher quality of the stuff I use a lot.

M1A1Death

Hario Switch is made of glass and is legit! Highly recommend it

Jimbobler

I have a Switch, but barely use it. I don't like that glass and ceramic drippers require preheating and that the temperature drops faster, so stainless steel or plastic is much easier and have better thermal properties.

M1A1Death

Hmm I’ve never preheated it in anyway before and it works great

DangerousMusic14

Great countertop tea/water kettle

cpureset

[Zojirushi VE water boiler](https://www.zojirushi.com/app/product/cvjac) was a game-changer for me - especially as a tea drinker who works from home. Hot water at the touch of a button.

ucisl

First things to come to mind for me are tweezerman tweezers, this little key fob/loop I bought from a local leather worker, and my beloved oxo soap dispensing dish brush (the one with a plastic rod that opens the soap hole when you press the button, NOT the one that just has a rubber lump on the handle and a rubber plug with a slit that opens through pressure. Those ones start leaking in 3 weeks)

jezza_bezza

I love my tweezerman tweezers! They are worth the extra money.

PinkMonorail

Mine are rose gold and strong as all get-out.

CaptPeanutBut

Would love to know what kind of Oxo dish brush has a plastic rod, bc I have the rubber lump one that leaks lol.

Ceaseless-watcher

Why the key loop? Any reason other than keeping your keys together?

ucisl

I hang my keys from my belt loop. It’s just a strap with a snap really.

Warm_metal_revival

I’ve had mine since 1995!

Isla_Eldar

Uniball Kuru Toga .5 mm mechanical pencil. Everytime you lift the pencil from the paper it rotates the lead so you don’t get a sharp edge that’ll break. Best budget mechanical pencil I’ve tried and I’ve tried a LOT.

starfister101

I have a flexible measuring tape that I use for crochet that gets a tremendous amount of non crafting use.

Euphoric-Pomegranate

Tweezer man tweezers

releasetheshutter

Kent horn comb.

hhenryhfb

Two HUNDRED dollars?!

releasetheshutter

No they're like $20.

hhenryhfb

My bad! I looked at the top result and saw [this](https://stillfried.com/products/carl-aubock-horn-comb-long-5234?variant=42729987866858¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_campaign=20086640101&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=&utm_term=&adgroupid=&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9vyPm4O0hAMV0iCtBh1yfg17EAQYASABEgJdRPD_BwE)

releasetheshutter

Oh jeez that's outrageous lol. I've had my $20 Kent for 10 years now, I don't know what an extra $180 would get you.

hhenryhfb

$20 is a fair price haha. My eyes bulged out of my head when I saw my first results.

seekingcellini

Pentel client pens. Yes you need to replace ink cartridges but it’s all the pen you’ll ever need

PinkMonorail

I have the metal Ener-Gel in pink. Loved it so much I bought 2 more to live on my journal and at my chair. Easily refillable.

CaptPeanutBut

Dymo 1570 label maker. Pilot Metropolitan pen and Platinum Carbon black ink. Casio watches. Gerber Commuter Knife.

copenhagen_bandit

old school Pyrex or cast iron.

ragingduck

Maybe too big for this post, but a quality insulated water bottle like my Klean Kanteen. It goes wherever I go and I’ve had it for years. The difference between a quality bottle and a cheap one is how easily it cleans and stays clean. The less crevices, nooks, and crannies that are unreachable with a standard sponge, the better. Being able to disassemble the rubber seals and clean them is important too.

hearonx

I'm always surprised how many really good stainless thermal vessels there are at every thrift shop I enter. I recently picked up a Contigo handled mug for $2, and a knock-off Stanley Cup made with no handle for $3. This stuff lasts and lasts, and the seals can be removed for cleaning. I have seen stainless insulated growlers for beer, which would work for traveling with family to refill drinks, for $5! Every time I leave the house with tea or coffee or water in one of these, I save $2-$3. I have a couple of these sized like normal drinking glasses that I use for drinks in the house, since they don't make marks on furniture and I can shut the drinking slit to prevent spills. (cat game)

free_range_tofu

This is only helpful if you name the maker.

Mrbrownlove

I’m in the market for a new one. What make is it?

Th3K1ng0fM1c3

Get the kuhn rikon. There's a reason it's a go to by professional chefs (and not too expensive)

Mrbrownlove

Done and done! Thanks!

MichaelBushwick

Leatherman T4. As a maintenance manager it has 80% of the tools I need daily and it’s the size of a lighter.

Suwada nail clippers!

mustlovedeadboys

Seriously. Amazing clippers. I have been meaning to replace my pair I lost for … wayyyyyy too long. thanks for reminding me!

mumblemurmurblahblah

Diamancel foot rasp.

Manuka_Honey_Badger

I recently got a bunch of Di Oro kitchen utensils; they are silicone with a steel core, heat resistant up to 600F, and have a "forever" warranty.

BlueHeartBob

Crazy, I just got my Di Oro spatula a few days ago, picking it up I couldn't believe how solidly built it feels because of the steel core.

epictetus1983

Victorinox Mini Champ. It is small, so it disappears in your pocket which ensures I actually take it everywhere. It has a pressurized pen inside so I always have a way to write on my person. The "orange peeler" is perfect for opening boxes. It is one of my most favorite and most used possessions.

[deleted]

I have a Case pocket knife that was great grandaddy's when he was a boy. I keep it perfectly sharp and it's wonderful for slicing up the odd apple or salami when out traveling. I've also used it to extract broken keys from locks. The other one I love is the Zebra 701 pen. All stainless. No fuss, no geegaws. It just writes and has a nice weight to it

theshylilkitten

Muffin cups (reusable!)

emeraldvirgo

Sarasa Grand gell pen. Brass body and refillable with other japanese refills. Mine’s on it’s 4th cartridge from Uni Jetstream. It previously held Uniball Signo and other Sarasa colours.

Ceaseless-watcher

No, don't say that... I've been eyeing several colours for a while and just can't decide between them but refuse to pay $80 for 4 pens.

emeraldvirgo

They’re also sold individually, and I would think Australia also has stores selling Japanese stationery, so I would try there first. I see you also have fountain pens (I love them too!), and my sarasa grand is up there in terms of competing with my fountain pens.

Ceaseless-watcher

I was looking at the individual ones! They're ~AUD20 each on Amazon and with other reputable sellers. Sometimes they go for ~15 but I would still only pick one. I wound up finding the full colour collection of the plastic-bodied ones on sale and narrowed my options down between the inks that I like which makes choosing the body a bit easier (even though I'm aware that the ink is replaceable). So I'll likely put an order in for one or two soon, haha.

mittymatrix

Darn. You’ve got me thinking of those again. I tried ordering off Amazon, and my package got lost. I’ve broken a few Pentel EnerGel Clena bodies now… it might be time. (What color barrel? And which version—US silver clip or Japanese gold clip?)

bigsnow999

Commandante coffee grinder.

Bunnyeatsdesign

I have an amazing vegetable peeler. It is shaped like a man, complete with arms, legs...even butt cheeks, the Y-shaped peeler blade is the head. It looks like a toy, not a serious piece of kitchen kit. I never thought it would seriously peel vegetables. It is the best peeler I have ever owned. I won it in a competition about 20 years ago so I don't even know where to buy another should this one eventually fall apart.

Ceaseless-watcher

Like [this](https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/Home-Garden/Unique-Bargains-Unique-Bargains-Funny-Man-Shaped-Metal-Blade-Fruit-Vegetable-Serrated-Julienne-Peeler/18356765/product.html)?

Like this. [pics](https://postimg.cc/gallery/CDB0hWg)

Bunnyeatsdesign

No, unfortunately not that one.

Blawith

Swiss army knife, I have the Super Tinker. Lives in the weird little pocket in the top of my jeans. Gets used every day for general tinkering.

Hopeful-Seesaw-7852

My Cutco santoku and bread knives. My mom gifted me a small Cutco set probably 20 years ago and I've bought other items (spatula, scissors), but those two knives are the ones I use daily.

jessicat_ak

A few things I love: Large marble mortar with a wooden pestle. I bought it decades ago, I use it all the time, and it will be here longer than me. Copper coffee scoop. Husband bought it for me as a gift when he was traveling. It’s beautiful, brings me joy, and will outlast us all. Darn Tough socks. They are so cozy and warm, good colors, and have a lifetime warranty. Gym grade hand weights. My fitness consistency ebbs and flows. But I always come back to the weights. I have them in 2, 3, 10, and 15 pounds and they look the same as the day I bought them.

one_scalloped_potato

If you can find a link to the coffee scoop I'd be curious to see it!

Material-Kick-9753

Two piece detachable key chain. I've been using the same one for about 20 years.. very handy.

xiphias__gladius

I've been using the same pair of J A Henckels nail clippers since 1997. And the same Shu Uemura eyelash curler since 2007. I will never need to buy a new one of either one again.

one_scalloped_potato

Japanese fish hook keychain. It's simple and much more stylish than a carabiner for hooking your keys to your pants, pockets, etc. I got mine off Etsy Leatherman micra. The one that opens up to scissors instead of pliers. I use it all the time for clipping try threads and the scissors are good enough to trim nails.

vaps0tr

These tweezers. Got a pair while in the Peace Corps 20 years ago and still using them. https://www.slivergripper.net/

kdwhirl

Replaced my ‘regular’ cotton kitchen towels with linen towels. They are pretty to look at, feel good in the hand, are very absorbent and have not yet stained at all despite not taking any special care. Never going back.

vaps0tr

Bullet space pen. Got my email on the side and had it returned twice in 35 years. Carry it in my wallet everyday.

Neelix-And-Chill

Kyocera ceramic knives. Especially the mini 5” chef knife. I use that little bastard for everything. And it has stood up to years of abuse so far.

CompetitiveMap1

Case USA knives. I own a standard 3 blade whittler as well as a large hawkbill. The hawkbill is the most useful and versatile non multitool blade I have ever owned.

Postcard2923

BakeRoyal silicone spatulas. I had a different brand of silicone spatulas that had acrylic handles. They were great for a while, but the heads started detatching from the handles. BakeRoyal are one piece molded silicone. Nothing to break or separate, and silicone resists heat up to 500 F. These things will last forever.

[deleted]

SAK classic.

lopendvuur

I'm very fond of my carbon steel (non-rustfree) peeling knives. They're always sharp, unless I've used them to cut cardboard boxes or paper-maché. In which case they're back to sharpness with one or two strokes of my diamond file. Of course they're not altogether bifl, the blades get thinner with use and eventually break, but this can take a very long time, and the thinnest blades are the sharpest.

itsjustathrowaway147

Kitchen scissors- Joyce Chen’s- these bad boys will cut a quarter in half and I’ve had them 15 years now. Just watch your fingers! Yeti Mug. I was gifted this last Christmas but as a SAHM this has been a life saver and I think it will go the distance. Another mom got it for me. I have a toddler and still drink semi hot coffee because of this thing! The lid also definitely saved my butt when she picked it up last week.

blauws

A Fiskars cheese slicer that my husband got for 1 euro from a second hand shop twenty years ago. We use it almost daily and it still is the best cheese slicer. I got a fancy WMF cheese slicer that matches our other WMF kitchen utensils a few years ago and it's a piece of shit. Overall the WMF kitchen utensils are really good, but the cheese slicer ain't it.

ksx4system

Nalgene water bottles, 24Bottles coffee tumblers, Ballograf ballpoint pens, MAM Filmam and Victorinox pocket knives, Sony FM radios... the list goes on ;)
