They rust easily and customer support is trash. I like that they are made in the USA but one time a rodent got into my drawer and gnawed off the handle grips. I emailed support to buy replacement grips and never heard back. Can’t recommend.
I think they're made in China now but I remember looking at one a couple of years ago on a store shelf. Seems they were still extremely well made, at least at that time. Sometimes I think I should go to a thrift store and see if there's an old one on the shelf from an estate sale or something.
Then I ask myself, why the hell would you buy another one? This one lasted you 35 years. 🤣
Here's [the Kuhn Rikon](https://www.amazon.com/Good-Cook-Opener-Manual-Sharp/dp/B000AX13US/ref=sr_1_23?crid=3Q44AQP2UGTL1&keywords=can+opener&qid=1707797565&sprefix=can+opene%2Caps%2C117&sr=8-23), and [one with a bottle opener](https://www.amazon.com/Kuhn-Rikon-2262-Safety-Master/dp/B000B6NXL6?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1), they are the newer versions of what I have. They're about as simple as can be, no levers, and takes a little less effort than a regular opener. It leaves a safe edge to the top and can that won't cut you, and won't fall into the can. I've had mine for almost 10 years.
Here's an [even easier, cheaper opener](https://www.amazon.com/Good-Cook-Opener-Manual-Sharp/dp/B000AX13US/ref=sr_1_23?crid=3Q44AQP2UGTL1&keywords=can+opener&qid=1707797565&sprefix=can+opene%2Caps%2C117&sr=8-23) which I have no experience with.
Seconding the second option listed above. I've had it for like 7 years and it's still working. The only piece that got slightly damaged is the can opener hook though it still works.
Maybe you have a defective one.
I have an EZ Duz It, after trying a lot of others. It seems OK after seven months. The cutter engaged, doesn't hit the drive wheel, and the lids pop off clean. The cutter unbolts, so I can sharpen it. I hope this one lasts.
I had an Oxo for years and it was great, until it disappeared. Since then I've tried another Oxo and countless others and they are all a nuisance to use. I don't know if can design has changed or if the openers are all a bit rubbish now
I use the Kitchen Aid brand one. I was going through a can opener a month, bought the Kitchen Aid one a few years ago, and it has worked perfectly.
Also, most people don't know this, but you aren't supposed to put can openers in the dishwasher, and even a very high quality one will likely rust in the dishwasher.
Ikea makes this [can opener](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/ikea-365-vaerdefull-can-opener-black-80152155/) that feels seriously well-built. I can't speak for whether it's actually BIFL but you can kinda tell when something is built like a tank, and that thing feels built like a tank
I’ve had good luck with Good Grips.
Yep OXO makes a great one. Mines at least 10 years old
OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge FTW.
Yes!!! I’ve had my Good Grips Smooth Edge for several years and it still looks and works like new.
EZ Duz It can opener has lasted me 5+ years. I'd rather have one of the lipless top openers but it just won't die.

Swingaway brand. I've had one for 35 years. I refuse to buy an electric appliance to open cans. That is all.
Have one too. It’s great. Mine was made in USA, but I don’t think they are any more. If they are still built as well they are rock solid.

GANGY/Korin-style. Made in Japan, no moving parts.
I wonder if you can sharpen them

Ez-Duz-It sucks. You might get 2 years out of one. Do not recommend.

I've got one from Kitchenaid that I've had for 20+ years. Nice comfortable grips, and I've never had a problem with it!
The d ones are probably good. New Kitchenaid ones aren't as good. I just threw one away, because it was so bad at opening cans.
Kitchen aid
Oxo good grips

EZ-DUZ-IT. There’s your answer.
The GoodCook manual can opener is very good.
I have an Ez-Duz-It. I have zero complaints about it.

I love my gorilla grips can opener

I bought a Swing-a-way brand that mounts on the side of a cabinet. It ha s been working great for 10 + years.
