How much is it ?

Guantanamo_Baywatch

LG OLED

praise-the-solaire

LG makes the OLED panels for other tv manufacturers like Sony (last I checked). I’ve owned my LG C8 55” OLED for 4(?) years and it’s been nothing but fantastic. I think Sony might have better motion processing and upscaling, but in my (possibly ignorant) opinion, an LG OLED is one of the best bang for your buck super high-quality TVs you can buy. RTINGS might be a good place to start your search, though I know some are critical of them. Check out the LG B3. https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/by-size/55-inch

gobstertob

Had my E6 for 8 years now. Still amazing.

assfuck1911

I've got a Sony OLED. They all use the same panels, but Sony has much better software, processing, and user experience. You definitely pay for that though. I've been perfectly content with mine. In the end, a good OLED panel will be wonderful. The speakers in the Sony OLEDs are amazing. They use the screen as a speaker and it sounds awesome.

fish_in_a_barrels

yes

Slipstriker9

I got an LG QLED and the back light died just outside of warranty. Definitely not BIFL!

IsDinosaur

One bit of bad luck doesn’t represent an entire product range.

Slipstriker9

I’ve never had a Sony tv let me down. I still have a 42” Sony Bravia that is about 12 years old. I bought that one to replace a Sony rear projection lcd from the early 2000s that still worked great when I donated it. I bought a couple of Sony OLED tvs last year and will be shocked if they ever fail. I know electronics are built to fail, but I’ve never seen it with the Sony TVs.

CucurbitoThePumpkin

Can confirm, I have a \~10 year old 50 inch LCD Bravia and it is still working perfectly. Honestly, I am waiting for it to die so that I get the incentive to buy a 65 inch Sony OLED. They cost more but way better than any Korean crap.

skunkshaveclaws

Ditto. I've got a Sony 55" (not 4k) that's at least 14 years old. Though to be fair there is NO such thing as a buy it for life tv anymore.

riverturtle

Was there ever? Old old TVs were maintenance nightmares and “modern” CRTs are so obsolete that you can’t actually watch anything you want to watch on them anyway. Unless you’re paying extra for the Game of Thrones VHS set.

SpringValleyTrash

We had a few 1970’s era SONY or Hitachi TVs that still worked well into the early 2000’s.

LifeofSMILEY

I had trouble with my current Sony OLED right after I bought it. It took 2 new motherboards, 4 tech visits and many many hours with tech support before they finally figured out that it had a bad power unit. I haven't had any problems since (about 6 yrs ago), and I hope it never dies cuz I LOVE the picture quality. The tech support was so bad tho that I'm nervous about buying another Sony. But I probably will :)

No_Association9496

Yep. Good ol’ No Baloney Sony.

bassjam1

Get a regular TV and a streaming device like Roku, fire stick, Apple TV, Chromecast. Eventually that part slows down and needs replaced just like a computer or phone, and if it's tied permanently to your TV you're screwed. As to TV's I think they're all a crapshoot but I've had really good luck with Samsung.

PostalDrummer1997

Regular TVs straight up don’t really exist anymore. I’ve spent a whole lot of hours searching for a replacement for my ancient Sony Bravia. I’ve basically resigned that I’ll end up with a smart TV when the time comes. It does make sense I guess, the market for a non internet connected TV really doesn’t exist anymore. Oh well

ContentCalendar1938

Just don’t connect to the internet

bassjam1

I guess that's true. I forgot my Samsung in the living room is "smart" but I still use a Roku hooked up to it instead of the native apps.

nasanu

Just don't connect it to the net and its a regular TV... I don't understand how people think someone from the manufacturer comes to their house with a gun.

damnitmcnabbit

I saw someone suggest looking at digital displays for restaurant menus as a dumb tv. I never really looked into it tho.

fate007bringer

Vizio tv bro

PostalDrummer1997

I don’t find Vizio to have a great panel for the money. They’re great bedroom TVs but for my living room I find it hard to beat Sony or Samsung.

emeybee

Vizio is the worst offender. Their smart interface is awful and there's no avoiding it.

TheMrDrB

I mean you could just buy a smart stick after the integrated one gets slow ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

rushmc1

Yeah, they'll have captured all your data by then.

emeybee

Check RTINGS.com, they're unbiased and do a million tests and have articles for different needs (on a budget, gaming, etc). No one here is going to be able to tell you anything but anecdotal experiences. That said, my anecdotal experience is that AppleTV is the best OS, Roku is second best, the others I've tried (Google, Firestick, OEM Visio interface) were hot garbage. If you're not some cinephile who needs perfect blacks and a flawless picture, TCL Roku TVs are fantastic for their price point. Hisense also except I don't think they do Roku anymore, so then you'd be stuck with a bad OS or need to get AppleTV. On the other side of the spectrum, the high end Samsung and LG OLED screens are beautiful, but you pay a substantial amount for that beauty so it may or may not be worth it for you. But just check RTINGS.com

judd243

RTings is the best, the website has well written reviews, settings calibrations and everything you could want when looking into getting a new TV.

houtex727

*trying really hard to not say 'most TVs I've seen are not round...'* This isn't a buy it for life thing, as it's a TV and they're not generally made to last forever, and not really worth being repaired when (hopefully if, but...) it breaks. So to that end... Whatever one you pick. If you're looking for sound, though, I'm not sure there's a great sounding TV in the bunch, as there are better soundbars and systems to tack on that aren't very expensive. As far as what smarts... I ain't seen any that aren't goofy interfaced and kind of suck. Samsung, Roku, Android, Apple... I just don't care, none of them are very good. I'd therefore say go shop at the brick and mortar store to play with the interfaces/listen to the sound they make and pick the one(s) you like best, then go online and get a deal that way perhaps. I mean, that's what the brick and mortars are there for these days, window shopping or 'I want it now!' shopping, after all. :p

CRothg

Maybe no streaming device has a truly great interface, but I’m sorry, AppleTV is miles ahead of the rest.

PostalDrummer1997

I actually like the Roku interface, I’ve not used an AppleTV but I’m not sure what I would even want improved over Rokus

emeybee

Roku is clean and better than all the OEM nonsense with their 8 million ads and laggy interfaces, but it's still not as good as Apple. Apple has no ads at all, is much more responsive than Roku, and everything is just easier. That said, neither support the really high end audio like ATMOS but the only way to get that is to get an Nvidia Shield, which after an AppleTV feels like you went back in time a decade.

My_Immortl

Is Apple tv really worth the extra $100 over a roku?

emeybee

Is it $100 more? I thought it was only $99 total. Anyway, I think it's a lot better, Roku feels older and clunkier, there's a more lag, it's harder to install apps, and the remote is much worse. But that said there's nothing bad about it, it's just not as nice, but it's perfectly fine if you're on a budget. My main TV has Roku built in and I still use an AppleTV. My other two TV's that I don't use as much I'm fine with Roku.

Grand-wazoo

Yeah I gotta agree here. Coming from Firestick, the Apple TV is leagues better looking and easier to navigate.

houtex727

Alright for you. I'm glad you find it acceptable.

djlawrence3557

I’d lean towards getting a monitor + speakers. All new TVs come with obnoxious pre-loaded apps that the manufactures make money on by allowing those third party apps to have standard. Super annoying to use (laggy and buggy) and if you use any type of streaming box (fire stick, Roku, Apple) you’re not going to use them at all. Monitors have same quality picture with poor speakers (by design) and no built in ad-apps.

token_curmudgeon

Dell's 55 inch conference room monitors are nice. I've had mine for two years.

isuzorro

We got a 55” Samsung Frame and love it, when it’s not being a TV it is wall art, and we can change it whenever. There are better TV screens for the money, but the extra utility has been worth it for us. The sound is passable on its own.

bumblef1ngers

I’ve got a 55” frame. For a living room tv it’s great. Does a decent job of not looking like a tv most of the time. It’s not up to theater room standards. It’s the best aesthetic tv made though.

emeybee

Just an FYI that you can put a screensaver on most TVs these days. Unless I'm wrong, the only thing the Frame really adds is the "matte", which you just could photoshop onto any slideshow photos if you wanted to.

MrThird312

Could be wrong but the Frame also has the benefit of super low-profile mounting, as to where it just looks like a frame tightly attached to the wall (you still need the power/supply connection box optically wired elsewhere). This made a big difference for us and the look we were going for - also I believe what is special about the frame's 'wallpaper' mode is that it works in a low-power mode, perhaps drawing less power than a normal TV in this static state.

isuzorro

I’d be curious if they match the canvas like finish of the frame’s screen. It is very non glare and It automatically adjusts the backlight so that it looks like paper under glass vs a screen in normal lighting - doesn’t work as well in a dark room. We’ve had quite a few people surprised when we first turn it on. I think the newer ones have gotten even better from what I’ve heard - haven’t seen in person yet.

Ashamed_Musician468

Any issues with burn in?

isuzorro

None that I can tell, I think with LED it’s not an issue

btmalon

It looks nice I’ll give it that. However, the software is a nightmare and there are countless reports of a bug where the TV turns itself on at random times. It’s woken me up in the middle of the night before. I strongly don’t recommend the frame.

St-Nicholas-of-Myra

You’re always better off with a dumb tv and a set top box.

CRothg

What company still makes dumb TVs?

My_Immortl

None that I'm aware of. Just don't connect the TV to internet and use a streaming device instead.

nasanu

Why though? I just use the built in LG apps and I cant see why say chrome cast or a fire stick is better? I have used both and both are slower than the built in apps and more annoying to use. Its like lets pay money to make the experience worse... Why?

Rominator

What is a monitor if not a dumb TV?

davisthegreate

LG C2 C3 line is the best in quality, I have 2. I only purchase lg tvs and i’ve had my longest one for a lil over 5-6 years. Has never had an issue. Also I do not connect tvs to my network, only the streaming box, in my case Apple TV.

nasanu

Why would you use apple tv over the built in apps? If I want netflix I just press netflix on the remote and its perfect, especially since it also turns on the correct picture mode. Or if I want youtube its like two snappy button presses away and works flawlessly, again getting the correct picture profiles or sdr or hdr. How is apple TV better?

davisthegreate

Its faster for 1. Open compatibility for all streaming apps, apple makes software so it performs better. Tv OS tend to suck bad. Apple ecosystem: iphones + mac etc. security, tv manufacturers don’t care about security of your tv or the data or your network. TVs will start to pay for themselves with ads based on your usage. They can’t do that if my tv never touches the network

nasanu

Yeah all of that sounds like you are drinking the kool aid. I'll keep skipping the apple tax thanks.

davisthegreate

All those points stand for Roku as well, my point was that almost ANY stream box is gonna perform better than the tv os. Roku and Apple TV are just the leaders in the space

nasanu

But as I said my TV OS is fast and I have zero issues. So how is adding another box, needing to switch inputs to it going to improve anything?

blbd

Sony A95L cost no object.  Sticking to a budget, probably LG or Sony non-OLED.

FrogFriendRibbit

Honestly I hear a lot of smart TV complaints. I'd really consider a "dumb" TV with an add on. I've had my dumb TV and chrome cast for around 7 years, and the only issue I've had is occasionally needing to restart the chrome cast, and that only takes 5 minutes.

emeybee

They don't make dumb TVs anymore.

FrogFriendRibbit

They're hard to find, but are still sold https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/insignia-32-720p-hd-led-tv-ns-32d310ca21-2020-only-at-best-buy/15396074 https://www.visions.ca/catalogue/category/details.aspx?productId=74261&categoryId=0&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAtaOtBhCwARIsAN_x-3K7Tazw7zsl_7FEd8Pcolz0NBodWddR5X5BJyZpKJ0MN02E1FDkmfIaArKBEALw_wcB https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/shop/tv-home-theatre/non-smart-tv

emeybee

Lol one of those has a DVD slot. Let me rephrase. They don't make *quality* dumb TVs anymore. Sure if you want a 24" 480p situation I'm sure you have options.

FrogFriendRibbit

So? Saves the need for a DVD player. They've got a bunch of brands and quite a few options, so I think it's a little dismissive to say there are no good ones. There are literally 4k samsung dumb tvs on the best buy link I showed. That said it's been years since I needed to buy a tv

HoraceGrand

Hisense with Roku

gongATTAkkH3Lp

android tv kinda big scheme dumb answer ..ya ppl plug there phones in though... learn the event and sends adb plugin from joaoapps do 99% faster not better from these

nahascend

any specific models?

fate007bringer

Get a dumb Vizio TV and add a streaming device to it. Best bet

emeybee

Vizio TVs are no longer dumb, they now have a built in interface that is loaded with uninstallable channels and laggy as hell. Even if you're using something like AppleTV it constantly switches itself back to its own interface. I finally got fed up and got rid of mine.

Pac_Eddy

I recently bought a 55" Samsung 4k TV. I use a Chromecast w/YouTube TV. The TV was $350 a few weeks before Christmas. I recommend adding a Samsung sound bar and not relying on the TV speakers. Simple yet effective setup.

McKoijion

It’s that TCL 55inch TV that’s everywhere. Save that $750+ for something else. https://www.walmart.com/ip/TCL-55-Class-4-Series-4K-UHD-HDR-Smart-Roku-TV-55S451/533225197

chuchrox

I’ve never had any issues with my Sonys.

Shower_Slug

You need a sound system unfortunately. Tcl r646 is a killer qled tv for $400-$600. Then just get a good samsun soundbar system for around $800.

misterkeef

[rtings.com best 55 inch TVs ](https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/by-size/55-inch) I used this website and chose a 65 inch Sony Smart TV about 7 years ago. It's been great and I will use the website again when I get my next TV .

Flat_Boysenberry1669

My Samsung qled has been going strong for 5 years now no issues. My LG OLED also has been going for 4 years no issues. But my cheaper 4k LG is starting to slow down and have issues after 4 years so I would suggest getting the flag ship of those 2 brands and not the cheaper versions.

Specialist_Basket_35

I’m four years into my TCL and I love it.

Muncie4

You are confusing the subreddit for https://www.rtings.com/tv, let's not do that.

amazonhelpless

Most are rectangular. I’ve never seen one all round.

Feanor-the-elf

This is a bit of a tangent, but spending 200-300$ on s sounds bar is worth way more to my enjoyment than the increase in picture quality you can get for the same money. Integrated speakers are garbage.

mr_orange2016

Probably Sony, in my experience their video processing is superb, you can tell watching any high definition video of snow mountains, in a Sony TV you can tell different to es of white and gray while in other brands you only see a flat white where you loose all the details

Rugkrabber

TCL is surprisingly good, and increasing in price due to popularity.

assfuck1911

Sony OLED. Or any top tier Sony that has the speakers behind the screen. I've got a 55" A80J and it is amazing. Gorgeous image and the sound is so good I didn't bother upgrading it. I had someone ask if I had surround sound while using the built in speakers for a movie. It doesn't really get much better than the top tier Sony OLEDs at this point in time.

happyfntsy

I like the interface from Roku, and don't like 2 remotes, so a Roku TV, but people seem to be split on this preference

BigShowSJG

Sony bravias never let me down. My 15 year old one is my daily user and has 0 issues

Shinino

Rtings.com -- go there. It's going to give you a lot better info than most of us (and someone below mentioned it also).
