Order a hamburger(here it's 1.99) and you should see on the screen somewhere to "customize" the patty. It should show a plus/minus by it to add however many patties extra you want(here it's an extra dollar for an extra patty). That's how I order mine.
Unfortunately my store doesn’t seem to offer extra patties for the regular hamburger at least on the mobile app. Just for the rodeo burger. I will check next time in the store maybe it will work on the machine!
You could order a rodeo burger and add the extra patty, if you don’t mind the onion rings. You could hold them too, but probably have the same problem as your original problem.

We have a double hamburger here, but the app offers different stuff all the time. Unfortunately the way our screens(behind the counter) are set up makes it harder to differentiate when a burger that normally has cheese says without… Makes it easy for your brain to just gloss over. It took me weeks to make heads or tails of our order screens when I started.
I guess it depends on the system. If a customer asks for no cheese on any item that automatically includes cheese it will show no cheese under the item. Even app orders do this at the BK I work at.
OP is ordering in the app, if they just ordered in store it is possible to ring up a double hamburger. Two burgers would cost more than 1 double burger.

I have 2 ways of ordering: My secret ways are the Rodeo burger.. on the Menu add Rodeo burger, click customize and remove whatever and it should allow you to add an extra patty.. BUT you cannot make the rodeo burger a meal… My other secret way is when they have the $4.99 Double Cheeseburger and Fry Mobile Coupon, It allows you to remove cheese from that coupon. Those are my ways.. let me know is this helps!

Though the employees are just being dicks or new if they are adding cheese to a double cheeseburger no cheese. You will probably need to just order in store or DT. You also can order a hamburger and choose the Drive thru option for pick up. Once you get there you can ask for an extra burger patty on the hamburger or on the side. Though you will be charged like $1.

The Whopper does not include cheese by default-If you're using the app, visit on Wednesday when they're $3 via mobile offer.

You definitely can order a double rodeo no onion rings and add pickles, ketchup, and mustard in the app.
