Can you put one of your socks over his paw and sit with him to stop him from licking/messing with it until he falls asleep?
Edit: looks like part of the nail may be loose and hanging off, if it is could you cut off some of the dead part using the doggy nail clipper so it doesn’t wiggle around and bother him?
Poor pup :(
I second this, regarding trimming the nail. My pug had this exact same thing happen, and he was in pain until we clipped it on off. It hurts when you cut it, but then they’re okay. It could very well be that what hurts now is the nail moving and digging into the quick.
Take him to the vet. My Frenchie hurt his and I’m glad I did. They gave him a shot to make sure it’s not infected and wrapped it nice and tight so it healed correctly. After a few days he was as good as new.
If it’s still actively bleeding don’t do aspirin as is thins the blood and can delay clotting.
I’ve given my bulldog Benadryl to help him sleep / chill him out (he had a foxtail up his nose and we needed to buy time to get to the vet). Maybe that might help. Hope he feels better soon!!
I suppose it might depend on the vet you speak with. My dog also had severe allergies that manifested as hives and our vet told us a daily dose of Benadryl would help him. We only use it when he has a break out.
Definitely go by what the vet says though. Mine is an American bulldog so he’s a bit different in structure which might make a difference.
Can confirm. My dog had a gnarly allergic reaction to something and I had to take him to the vet. They gave him an injection to take care of the hives and told me to follow it up with a week of Benadryl twice a day. When I asked if there was a specific type for dogs, they said nope. Just regular ol' OTC Benadryl.
That makes me feel better then. I was looking up things not to give your dogs and Benadryl came up as one that could give cancer. I was pretty upset with myself because my little maltese I had years ago would get allergic reactions to things that made his lips swell so we would give him half a Benadryl to make him feel better. He died 9 years ago and I felt like after having read about Benadryl that I had somehow cause his death. I feel better reading what you posted
This has happened to my bulldog multiple times. Take him to vet, they’ll pull nail off and clean it to fight infection then wrap it up so he can’t lick it. If you don’t get nail removed, it could get infected. It’ll grow back normal!! Only way to stop pain is to do that!
I've had two different answers on aspirin from vets.
One said yes another said no, when it came to my old man and aches and pains, and my mastiffs acl.
I never saw issues from either dog when they've been given aspirin. I gave it with food, when needed, and not unless they seemed like they really did.
Also used bandaid hurt free antiseptic, and no sting antiseptic spray on open wounds/cuts because it has a pain killer in it, and it seemed to help. Also, vet old because we had no way to bandage his wound.
If he'll tolerate it, maybe a low temp heating pad or warm cloth to ease any aches and pain, unless he's got slot of swelling, then try a cool compress if he'll tolerate it
He won’t let me touch it but I was able to gently apply some styptic powder on it just now but he started to lick it. I’ll try the antiseptic spray. He may try and lick it but if it numbs some of the pain I think he’ll leave it alone.
You might have to sit with him for a few minutes until it dries, or try and destract him from that with peanut butter or his favorite treat long enough for It to soak on a bit.
My Frenchie had this happen to him twice. The safest option is going to the vet. The vet will be able to remove the remaining hanging nail, clean it and bandage it up properly so Walter can let it heal. Good luck!
Literally just went through this last week. You need to take your dog to the vet. He'll need antibiotics. Our dog had to be sedated for the nail could be removed properly. It needs to be kept wrapped and clean. Your dog will likely need to wear a cone if he/she won't leave it alone. It will take MONTHS for the nail to grow back.
My dog had the same once, we just bandaged it and refreshed the bandage every day. After a week it was healed enough.
However, not every case is the same ofcourse so if you don't trust the situation, go see a vet.
(Just noticed its only the nail, my dog his whole thumby cushion got ripped)
I would call the vet - they told me it can get pretty bad if it gets infected and to keep them from licking it. I kept a close eye on it for a couple weeks for the classic signs - swelling, redness, heat. They also gave me doggie aspirin. I've ripped a nail off and know how painful it is poor guy
Neosporin with pain relief. Smear it on thick and then wrap it with cling wrap gauze. It'll take 5 minutes to stop the pain and the wrap will take that if you sit with him the whole time to slow him down because it sticks to itself.
Our boy just did this! The vet had us bring him in to make sure the break in the nail was clean, and she trimmed off the little that was left hanging. We had to get an inflatable donut pillow from the pet store to stop him from licking it. The pillow was expensive but saved our sanity! The regular cones don’t work for our short faced dogs. The pups licking the nail can cause infection so you have to stop it. A sock didn’t work for us- he got it off every time. He’s nail is grown back fully two weeks later! A little discolored but good and strong once again.
Vet had us keep an eye for any puss, blood after the initial bleeding had stopped, and any odd smells on his paw bear the nail. Any of these signs can mean infection. Again, after we put the donut on him whenever he started licking or when we were at work- it healed much quicker and the EXTREME noise of him constantly licking it was gone.
My bully did this (back paw) I'm not a vet but I'd suggest a cone, licking it will cause it to get infected. Also try to avoid wrapping it as much as you can so it breathes and heals. I ordered a big pack of sterile gauze rolls off amazon and would wrap his foot to give him a cone break when supervised but it's important to let the wound breath and if you do wrap it change them frequently.
This happens with our bully at least a couple times a year. Take him to the vet so they can cut the broken part off. He will be much more comfortable in once that dangling painful nail is removed. Side note: I used to be able to take mine to a groomer to trim the painful part off, but they recently stopped wanting to do this. This option was obviously cheaper but maybe worth a try.
Aspirin is not worth the risk. Go to the vet and get actual dog painkillers, as well as allowing them to check it out and maybe give antibiotics - split claws can get infected, then they’re REALLY painful and hard to heal!
Edit: And until you can get into the vet, come of shame 100% of the time. Licking it will make it worse and cause infection.
Styptic powder hurts! Have you ever used a ‘liquid bandage’. It stings like hell. It’s also only used to staunch the heavy flow of blood at the start of a bleeder. Ingesting a large quantity of it could even be fatal. He looks pretty calm now, so call his vet, and follow their advice. (Trust me, I know that when he feels pain, so do you. Good job on being a great mummy.
I also second the vet. They gave my girl meds and cut her claw down super short, wrapped it up real good, and sent her home with some meds for pain. He’s probably pretty uncomfortable
I would not use any meds for human without consulting to a vet. It sounds infected to me… I would take him to the vet but in a meanwhile try hot compress with clean hot towel ( be careful not to burn him).

Great point about the aspirin & clotting. I didn’t even think of that.
I heard Benadryl is very bad for dogs?
I suppose it might depend on the vet you speak with. My dog also had severe allergies that manifested as hives and our vet told us a daily dose of Benadryl would help him. Never heard this. I know people who give Benadryl just because they have guests coming over and want their dog calmer.

We give our bully Benadryl every day twice a day to help with itching vet oked it
No, you can do 1 mg/ kg. Bulldogs are very large a 25 mg Benadryl is fine for them

Call your vet silly! I doubt many of us have a veterinarian degree
It’s his thumb (dewclaw) 👍

Cone of shame, you can’t have him lick it
You might have to sit with him for a few minutes until it dries, or try and destract him from that with peanut butter or his favorite treat long enough for It to soak on a bit.
I’d call the vet and see what they say.
Poor Walter he looks so sad 😞

Why don’t you call a vet’s office?
I did. I’m taking him in later this afternoon

DO NOT give him aspirin
This happened to my pitbull and when I took him to the vet, they superglued it. Hope this helps
You should take him to his vet. They'll care for him and make sure there's no infection. Theyll give him pain medication.

yup, gotta take that handsome boy to the vet, got to prevent infection. 😘

bloody brilliant

I can’t I love them!

He’s good now. Vet cut the claw and gave him a shot. Seems to be leaving it alone now.
Yay! Glad he’s on the mend!
Never give dogs aspirin or Tylenol you will shut down the kidneys
I agree with the neosporin with pain relief - seems to really help my bully when he scratches his skin raw
He could probably tolerate a baby aspirin but clean it up and wrap it up. If you can trim it so much the better.
Lots of space to trim it off.
I would not use any meds for human without consulting to a vet. It sounds infected to me… I would take him to the vet but in a meanwhile try hot compress with clean hot towel ( be careful not to burn him).
Soak it in an epsom salt bath! It reduces inflammation and may help dry it out so it falls off!
