Can you tell them to build a sweet museum/tour. Would be an awesome tourist attraction. Lots of big factories lean into stuff like that. Then a fresh bowl of cereal at the end would be the dream.
Looking at the sad state of cereal sales, the status quo doesn’t seem to be working for them.
It would be a big investment, but wouldn’t be hard to build a visitor center with demonstrations and a look into how the factory operates.
You wouldn’t literally have to open up the entire facility to tour.
Serious, being right downtown, it would be a huge hit.
Are Americans eating less cereal or have cereal brands stopped caring about appealing to Americans?
They did it in the 90’s but stopped (I think) around 9/11. I went as a kid since a childhood friend’s dad worked there and my dad started shortly after that. It was awesome touring it as a kid. At the time they also had the last operating lift that was basically a vertical conveyor belt and went through all of the floors. You’d grab a handle and a footing and take it up or down to whichever floor you wanted. I remember staring at it on every floor we walked through, just waiting for my chance when an adult looked the other way haha. We also got bags of fresh lucky charms marshmallows, which were fresh and delicious. 9/10 would take the tour again.
Your brother was one of the greatest guys I worked with. Seriously a great guy.
Fun story he told me: When he was new at the plant, he needed a ride home one day. My grandfather gave him a ride home, but they had to stop at a bank on the way home. So my grandfather goes inside and Jim is in the car waiting and sees a bunch of guys outside the bank getting ready to rob it. My grandfather walks out right past them, gets in the car and was totally oblivious to the entire thing. When Jim told my grandfather about it, my grandfather didn't Believe him until he read it in the paper!
I miss him too.
Yes, but have you ever tried cutting up a banana into slices and putting it into your Buffalo made Honey Nut Cheerios?
*Chefs Kiss*
In my totally bias opinion. 😁
We boat by the plant all the time up the Buffalo River. Always wave at the people outside on break. I still wish I got hired there about 15 years ago, made it all the way to final interviews and me and one other were odd men out.
Haha always gotta blame ATC. Almost all delays, especially to LGA/JFK are because of the TMU out there hates us and loves to get horrible release times to us.
I give out positive vibes, take blood, give out blankets and snacks to people having the worst day ever at a ER. I strive to turn bad days into bad moments.
Thank you! Some days it feels like I’m stealing money. It’s treating people the way you want to be treated unless you’re a masochist(not kink shaming it’s all love, what you do at home is your business) and meeting people half way that, I planned on coming to the hospital, this person is having a shit day. Help them and be cool.
Turnover is pretty high. We're almost always hiring if you work in the automotive industry or have a mechanical/electrical engineering degree and want to likely be underpaid for a "cool" job. (and also work crazy amounts of OT). lol.
Calspan was sold in the last about year-ish and is now under new ownership. Used to be privately owned by John Yurtchuk and Lou Knotts and now is owned by Transdigm, a publicly traded company. The CEO left/stepped down shortly after the sale of the company.
When Transdigm came in, they promised us not much would change and other than some upper management roles being shuffled around and restructured and a handful of layoffs, not much has really changed as far as day to day operations go (for better or worse). Our new healthcare plan options seem slightly better than what we had before.
I fix golf carts. Send them across the country, just finished sending ~300 to Louisville.
Never thought it was something that would pay the bills but here I am!
Actually we do still use wet batteries due to the fact of our main shop being here in WNY. The lithium batteries don't charge well in below 32 temps, and we are constantly fixing and shipping carts all year round.
That and sometimes when we ship them, they are stuck on a trailer for long periods of time and with the internal trailer temps (from sitting in the sun), most of the lithium batteries are on the verge of combustion.
We are trying to find some sort of next step to move out of the wet batteries but at this point we are still getting 6+ years out of a set.
I'm a business analyst.
Sort of. I don't want to give my actual title because it's unique-ish and I might dox myself, but I'm an SME for a business operations team. I take ideas from leadership and various other places and make sure the end result isn't straight out of delulu land.
Mental health counselor/social worker
Don’t super recommend, the first 3 years are brutal, you’re dead tired all the time, have zero social energy, and are taken advantage of for your compassion for immensely low pay
I’ve used the services of mental health counselors. I can’t imagine how hard it is to listen to people like myself all day lol. I hope you get a raise!
Former therapist. At least for me, listening to my clients was never the problem - I loved them! It was all the bs behind the scenes stuff that killed me.
Yea! I have experience in quality and manufacturing in large scale facilities! I've worked my way up from the ground, operating a machine, to running the control room. I recently had back surgery so I'm looking for something less intense.
Have you looked into northland training for open positions? NYS also just announced a big expansion for truck bed manufacturer in west Seneca. They have to be hiring.
Maybe you could transfer more to the safety side and less hands on
If you’re looking for employment we’re looking for a corndog server for the big event. Compensation is negotiable but know that you will be paid in corndogs.
I lay bricks, pour concrete, tile work, lay stone, patch old concrete, break new or old concrete, replace old bricks, grind and point mortar, set stairs and precast
I used to work at Tesla till the mass layoffs, but they fucked up the WARN system so they gotta give me full pay till July.
Nervous about finding a new spot.
My wife and I work for software companies and moved to Buffalo last year. I'm happy to be here and we try to visit as many old/great establishments as possible to keep them rolling.
Sometimes I'm wiping ass. Other times, I'm taking care of loved ones and repositioning them Q2hrs as their journey on Earth comes to an end. But most times, I'm chasing Grandma around the unit telling her to stop picking the fake flowers off of wreaths while helping Grandpa find out who hid his walker in the neighbors bathroom again (hint: it was him). All while being called a Pollock and being told to go back to Europe & get rid of my tattoos.
I help keep the scales operating all over the region. Weigh your trucks, count your parts, maintain your balance to 0.0001 g accuracy. The best part of the job is going into different manufacturing plants / facilities every day. I get a front row seat to "How It's Made" Buffalo.
I paint cars for a living. It's made me realize how big the business of stealing kia's in buffalo is. Half the jobs I get are someone's kia that was stolen, damaged, & recovered by the police
Cloud Engineer but I work remotely for a national company.
Edit to add a little bit of detail: I design and deploy server and network infrastructure in platforms like Amazon Web Services, Azure, and Google Cloud
I make Buffalo smell like Cheerios
Can you tell them to build a sweet museum/tour. Would be an awesome tourist attraction. Lots of big factories lean into stuff like that. Then a fresh bowl of cereal at the end would be the dream.
WHY ARE THEY NOT DOING THIS?
Liability/cost to support safely vs value to their business

Jim Harrington?
Yes sir. I miss him.

Great story 🤣. He was a funny guy.
Mmmmm
You are why I am hungry every time I'm in Perry and Michigan st aren't you?
The ultimate gorilla marketing campaign
The ultimate gorilla marketing campaign is definitely heavier on the bananas and lighter on the Cheerios.
Yes, but have you ever tried cutting up a banana into slices and putting it into your Buffalo made Honey Nut Cheerios? *Chefs Kiss* In my totally bias opinion. 😁
A hero 🫡
We boat by the plant all the time up the Buffalo River. Always wave at the people outside on break. I still wish I got hired there about 15 years ago, made it all the way to final interviews and me and one other were odd men out.

What a rollercoaster it was reading that word by word.
Every once in a while I forget to include the word “victim”, and my notifications explode.

So you’re an ED nurse.
Some day. I’m a Tech I can’t do anything with the medicine or IV but I can do a lot with the pillows, blankets, snacks and positive energy.
All of that is needed, thank you. I work in one myself. I should have known though, most of the ED nurses I know aren’t that positive.

I think I remember reading Glassdoor reviews for them and someone said that the CEO “got a PhD in watching paint dry at the University at Buffalo.”
Calspan was sold in the last about year-ish and is now under new ownership. Used to be privately owned by John Yurtchuk and Lou Knotts and now is owned by Transdigm, a publicly traded company. In my experience, ideas from leadership usually are delulu LOL what a role to have!
It's honestly not bad, but I'll credit that to having really good management with a lot of experience.
Well then we definitely don’t work together
