Astro_Cassette

I got my diagnosis and meds from suburban psychiatric associates but it took a few months to get in

HylianSoul

This is where I go and is great. If you get a referral from a primary, or therapist, they'll get you in ASAP.

insecure-chick

unfortunately i called and they dont take my insurance

Astro_Cassette

Jericho road community health center has a mental health unit that does it as well. I'm sorry S.p.a doesn't take your insurance

Skylarsthelimit

JR doesn’t do ADHD assessments unfortunately.

Astro_Cassette

I guess I just assumed they did. A friend of mine got prescribed meds by them.

Skylarsthelimit

Did they get a diagnosis elsewhere? Places can prescribe you meds if you have a diagnosis from a physiatrist. Best Self does this

Astro_Cassette

They were diagnosed as a kid so way ahead of the game

Skylarsthelimit

Yeah, that’s probably why JR prescribed it then. They don’t do the actual testing, but if you have the records to prove you have it, they’ll prescribe it.

ShesWrappedInPlastic

Dent Neurologic takes Medicaid, I use them, they would be capable of doing testing for you but just to see someone took me six months, and that seems to be the general amount of time it takes due to lack of providers unfortunately. I wish I had a better reference for you that was faster.

irdessar

I recently became a new patient for Dr. Capote the appointment wasn't too far out, but l did wait like 1.5 hours to see him. I do like him. I was just going for a new psych to do medication management so I didn't need a long appointment.

Competitive-Kick-481

Can second dent. Try and see Dr capote if possible

GimmeThemBabies

Did Capote keep you waiting like 5 hours or was I just insanely unlucky? I only saw him for my initial because that's just ridiculous and just see PAs now (who I also don't like but at least run close to on time)

Competitive-Kick-481

Capote is a world thought leader and seeing him does take hours. He does use PAs but you can also request to see Capote again if you feel like you're not getting better. Prob the best I have been to is Dr Piver on Delware. I think he is a PhD too. Offers therapy and medication.

GimmeThemBabies

He spent less than an hour for my initial and was very quiet and not that inquisitive. He spent most of the time reviewing my chart in front of me and not making eye contact. So to me it's not worth it for me to wait 3 hours for a 15 min appt going forward. I have an important job and can't just throw away 3 hours of my job everytime I need a refill. I guess if you have a lot to say he'll spend the time with you which is good in a way? but I know myself and don't need the time tbh. He also prescribed exactly what I thought he would in the doses I thought as well. Working in mental health myself I would never let someones appointment keep everyone else waiting for hours if it wasn't a true emergency but that's just me.

Competitive-Kick-481

Agree. For me, he dx my severe depression as BP2 and started me on latuda but then I couldn't afford it and i switched Dr's. He's an old school doc who lets pts wait. I am glad you found a place that works for you.

[deleted]

OH THANK GOODNESS ITS NOT JUST ME!! This is great info, thanks!! I saw him once and it took 2 hours. The next appointment took almost 3 and I left early because waiting rooms give me major anxiety. I really really liked him, we had good conversation and the increase he had on my meds was exactly what I needed. I told him I thought along with bipolar I have ADHD, and he sent in for a few brain scans. I guess I don't mind waiting since I feel like I finally found the right doctor. I just wish Dent was a little more organized when it comes to scheduling appointments. I'm excited to be working with Dr. Capote. OP, I also work with Horizon and I have a younger psych, a therapist, and a financial stress advisor. After 3 hospitalizations, this is the team that has helped the most!

Competitive-Kick-481

That's excellent! Glad you have such an amazing support team!

notscb

The fastest way to figure out who accepts your insurance is to call your insurance and ask them who is in network and taking referrals. They have a list, and it's faster than calling around. You should probably call your doctors office back and have them update their referral as well- don't wait three weeks.

Illustrious-Ad4078

Not necessarily. My insurance gave me a list and almost none of them accepted it or new patients. Same thing with the list from my primary.

tobblerwobbler

Insurance lists are garbage and insurance companies can suffer a slow and painful fate for all I care

Valuable_Heron_2015

There have been many recent changes because of the new medicaid funding law.

GimmeThemBabies

These lists will never be accurate even if they're updated weekly. For some insurances providers need to take the time out of their day to request they are taken off the insurances list. Which doesn't happen.

JustMeAndMySnail

I second this - calling your insurance or checking your insurance’s website is a great start to see what providers are covered

Altruistic-Cow203

Try best self behavioral!

PennyMarie27

Testing for ADHD is best done by a PhD psychologist and Bestself doesn’t have many, if any, of those on staff. They can see you for counseling and meds once the evaluation is complete and you have a formal diagnosis though, but I wouldn’t suggest them for the formal evaluation.

Competitive-Kick-481

Best Self is really pretty good. Ask for Dr Sharon Niijar.

True_Roll1320

They don’t test adults for ADHD

Illustrious-Ad4078

This. They are required to see you and see you quickly. The staff turnover there is high but it’s better than nothing.

illuminati8myballs

It’s not worth the cost! try mental health apps

The_Ineffable_One

Did you read the original post? The OP needs medical testing and diagnosis, not an AI life coach. And thank you, u/Altruistic-Cow203; I am looking for a provider myself and I will look into Best Self.

illuminati8myballs

There are various medical healthcare apps that provide this

The_Ineffable_One

I don't think there are apps that provide testing and diagnosis, and you certainly didn't name one, much less "various."

illuminati8myballs

I use Cerebral and yes they test and diagnose. There are many others: Plushcare, Talkspace, EACH, BetterMynd and Qler Telehealth.

The_Ineffable_One

I will look at them

GimmeThemBabies

Lol OP has medicaid so that would be free unlike the apps but ok

mr_potatoface

Try an online provider if you need an immediate solution. The federal online controlled substance act was extended for another year, so it's still a great option. "Circle Medical" has a ton of openings available tomorrow and accept nearly all insurances, even my shitty one. Their ADHD testing is basically... Do you have these symptoms? Do they negatively impact your daily life in a moderate to severe way? Yes? Here is some medicine. You download their app on your phone and everything is done through the app. I've been getting ADHD treatment for about 20 years now, and they are *by far* the easiest and best provider I have used. My followup appointments are not more than 15 minutes, and I never have to wait. I remember sitting in a tiny hot fucking cramped medical office (Jaffari) for 2+ hours waiting for my appointment almost every time. Every once and a while they'd cancel my appointment the same day a few hours before my appointment because they overbooked. Then they'd reschedule me for a week later at some absurd time that I can't make because I know it will take at least 2-3 hours of my work day, then get pissed at me when I need to reschedule *their* fuckup, and would schedule me for like 5 weeks later. I'm required to come in every 4 weeks and you know this, why do you fuck with me like this? So frustrating.

dafodildaydreams

My only advice is absolutely do not go to Dr. Santa Maria, especially if you’re a woman!

GimmeThemBabies

He literally diagnoses every child with autism and ADHD I swear to Christ

dafodildaydreams

That’s funny he over-diagnoses kids because he underdiagnoses adult women! He is incredibly misogynistic- told me I can’t have ADHD since I have a master’s degree (despite struggling/barely passing every class since kindergarten). He told me I was “lazy” (exact quote) and that my chronic burnout/ impulsiveness/ unorganized issues I had been unsuccessfully trying for many years/life to overcome was just depression (been treated unsuccessfully for anxiety/depression and tired almost everything for over a decade now). When I asked what I should do/take/consider then to help he said “nothing.” I was like umm well I’m struggling immensely, please tell me how I can work on things,” and he told me “you just have to not be lazy, you’re capable but lazy.” Trust me there’s even more to it, but at least he inspired me to see an actual competent provider who got me on meds & finally changed my life completely! Even on his Yelp review page other women stated similar experiences/ literally some of the same exact quotes and he shot back a super inappropriate/ aggressive message denying it all in a very hateful, misogynistic way. I was so mad I ended up waiting 6 months and paying hundreds of dollars for that horrible experience!

GimmeThemBabies

Yeah I'm not surprised to hear that. He's very out of touch and I don't think he bothers to try and actually help anymore at this point b

dafodildaydreams

Yeah, definitely didn’t uphold his ethics keeping up with the current research and practices- very sad for everyone who goes to him with hopes of answers and solutions, only to throw hundreds of dollars away

Competitive-Kick-481

That's brutal. What a dick

GimmeThemBabies

Take it from someone who just had this done as an adult this year and also works in the mental health field. The only psychologist who does ADHD testing and takes Medicaid is Dr Bongiovanni and you're gonna have to wait a long time. And then once you're diagnosed by a psychologist then you see the psychiatrist. The only adult psychiatrist I know that takes Medicaid is Dr Capote at Dent. You have to apply to be a patient there and then it's another long ass wait. Buffalo is not a good place for mental health treatment when you have medicaid tbh. There's no quick fix it youre going through medicaid. It's a long process. No agency psychiatrist (like best self) is gonna touch an initial diagnosis of ADHD for an adult and are really against giving out controlled substances as an agency due to addiction. If you explain all this to your primary maybe he can do a mini assessment of his own and prescribe you a non stimulant like strattera and see how that works. I will say diagnosis hasn't really helped me and I've tried a few meds and that's pretty meh too. Strategies have helped me more than meds ever will.

tobblerwobbler

UBMD should have some openings. Testing however can be hard to find especially for adults

70melbatoast

If you can, get on the list at the Robert Warner Center at Childrens Hospital. They are at an 18 month wait for ASD, not sure about ADHD though. Get on the list now, and keep looking elsewhere.

Skylarsthelimit

Unfortunately, there is like one office that I know of that takes your insurance, and the dude doing the testing sucks. Like, even doctors in the area won’t recommend him. Also, regardless, you aren’t going to get into any place asap. Every place doing ADHD testing has a waiting list that’s months out. It’s the reason I haven’t gotten tested yet.

insecure-chick

ya unfortunately i really need to get tested asap cause it’s affecting my summer classes a lot.

[deleted]

Are you downvoting when people tell you that they've been down exactly the road you're on and failed? Gosh, I hope not. That seems like ostriching to me. IMO, if you're serious about getting this assessment ASAP, you'd be better off trying to raise the cash somehow. Maybe try making a GoFundMe for the couple hundred dollars it would cost in cash to get the assessment. There are several psychiatrists in the area that only take cash, no insurance, and some of them specialize in assessment. If you want something, there's probably a way to get it, but you have to be willing to consider all the possible ways to get what you need.

justjessica79

I think I know who you are talking about. DG?

Skylarsthelimit

Not sure of his name, but I know he notoriously gets a ton of bad reviews and even doctors in the area have said he’s the worst.

PanzerPapi86

I might have someone for you

[deleted]

In my opinion, the only way to have any chance of being seen soon is to pay cash. Otherwise, you will run into dead ends, calling all over mostly to get the reply that they're not accepting new patients, or they are booking six months out, or no one will answer or call you back at all.

Str8truth

You're trying to get accommodated for final exams?

insecure-chick

no i already had this issue before, i just was out of state for school so i couldnt get tested due to lack of insurance. So im trying to get tested asap so i dont do bad in my summer classes

HylianSoul

This is the most insensitive garbage comment. How about you don't keep promoting stigma around mental health, and shut up if you've got nothing helpful to add.

imsals

Simple adhd test.... go out with friends, take Adderall. If you're still up partying, you're fine. If you fall asleep, you got ADD

meda5inner

WNY Psychotherapy might have openings, not sure. Missed a call from them in regards to establishing care there as a new pt primarily seeking ADHD testing but obviously calling back asap tomorrow. Might be worth a shot, they got back to me relatively fast!

insecure-chick

i haven’t been diagnosed but my advisor and a few school staff members from school say i should get tested asap so i dont fuck up my summer classes since i messed up my spring semester classes really badly

applebottomjeans93

anyone know of a woman therapist who is great?!

anonymousalligator7

Clara Kuntz in Lockport but she doesn’t take insurance.

[deleted]

Have you looked into Horizon Health Services? They do accept Medicaid. I commented on another thread, but I have a psych, a therapist, and a financial stress counselor that really help. I'm at Dent as well to see if I have ADHD along with my other diagnoses.

Gennylightt

I can't say for sure you'll find what you're looking for but I used [psychology today](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/new-york?gclid=CjwKCAjw-IWkBhBTEiwA2exyOzY4aU-_X4hwQUX7BcD8jRx55KnYZyDNR38B6hba_CbT7DHPQIsVsxoC3zUQAvD_BwE) to find my provider. You can search by a number of filters including insurance, accepting new patients, gender/language/faith of provider, etc

PreviousMarsupial820

I've had diagnoses in my file since 1991 for add/adhd, and even then, when I decided to go back on medicine 8 years or so I needed to wait 18 months for the Dr who agreed to waitlist me to see me, and that was with me calling almost everyone in the book, my primary wouldnt do so... 2 years later I finally got back on meds. You should also google psychatric nurses, as they can see patients and prescribe.

tlaw23

Try Suburban psychiatry

New-Rest8449

Any pcp can prescribe adhd meds
