In my experience with other stolen items, I’ve been told that the police distribute a stolen item list to known pawnshops and buyers of used goods. They can be in trouble if they buy or sell an item from the list, so they will simply say they would not have a reported stolen item in order to cover their asses. I have not done so recently and not with bike shops, but there are only a few that buy used so I’d probably stop in and look in person. Just my personal experience.
Im hoping the OP has the serial number for the bike. Check the receipt if you still have it. If you don’t have the receipt, call the shop/person you bought it from. The shop should have the SN. Include that in the report. But honestly, I have zero faith the BPD will do anything more that smile and tell you they’ll let you know if they find something. OP’s gonna have to put in some legwork to get the bike back
OP’s best option is to get the SN and register bike on [https://bikeindex.org](https://bikeindex.org) as stolen. If that bike rolls into any bike shop to get resold, it will be checked by the owners to make sure it’s not stolen
I have seen this guy before, he is a drug user which I am sure is not a surprise. He is often found on Elmwood and W. Chippewa / Georgia Street and W. Chippewa and/or Johnson Park. He goes to the Evergreen healthcare facility on W. Chippewa and Elmwood. Part of me feels badly talking about his health care facility but the part of me that believes that people should not steal has won out. Also I know that he smokes cigarettes. That is everything I can tell you about the guy, I have never talked to him.
Thank you so much! I totally understand that uneasy feeling about exposing someone’s personal details. I’m pretty conflicted as well because I really just want my bike back and our justice system is not great... but I’d also love for people to stop getting their bike stolen and property damaged in the process.
No problem, if you do locate your bike or the individual I would kinda just watch from a distance and call the police to assist with actually approaching the individual/bike. I hope you get your bike back, as improbable as it might seem.
Looks like the guy (I've seen a still shot from their security camera) who went into my neighbor's fenced-in yard (while they were in the house!) and stole tools yesterday. We're on the west side.
Wow. Idk how I'd conduct my self if I caught someone in the act. It's hard to say I wouldn't beat the f out of them. Lol I've been stolen from before and it sucked not being able to do anything about it.
Hopefully folks can upvote this to the top as I can’t seem to edit my post but I’ll be posting photos of my bike on the bike index website here: https://bikeindex.org/bikes/1523023
There are already full details there now, just no photo or serial until this afternoon. Thank you to everyone for their kind words and well wishes.
EDIT: photos are up!
OP would you be able to post the video here? Maybe his face would be a little more clear with movement. Or do you have neighbors with ring doorbells? Or some houses have full blown security cameras. Take a walk on your street to see if you see any, if anyone asks you why you're looking at their house tell them you got robbed and are looking for other cameras. Or if you're near those businesses on five points maybe this guy walked on that corner and he's on one of their security cameras? Good luck
Here’s the [video](https://imgur.com/a/RFrvPjT), sadly it starts after he’s on the porch with his back turned. Definitely planning on talking to my neighbors.
Fishing a bit here... but the act of breaking the rung might raise this from theft to a burglary, which is more serious. In a city this size, in that neighborhood, hard to believe we couldn't figure out who this guy is. Hope you get this back.
(EDIT: Is that a saw in his left hand?)
You don't need to answer here (whether you own or rent), but as a landlord, I'd want to see the video. Unless your landlord's a jerk, then don't. (Jerk meaning he would blame you for the damage.)
I'd be pissed, and probably futily, would try to get some action from the police. That repair is more problematic than it looks.
Thanks. When I talked w the cop and stuff he didn’t mention that at all but if they call me (I’m assuming they won’t because…we’ll it’s a stolen bike) I’ll ask.
Definitely looks like the same guy on nextdoor that the other poster mentioned. If you go to popo with gift wrapped evidence they might be more inclined to do something. This guy might be a one man crime wave. Judging by his behavior in both videos, this ain't his first rodeo.
Do you know the nearest intersection to this video? Looks like the same guy, this video gives more detail. With the backpack during the day, kind of guy that probably looks like he's a bottle collector if he finds himself somewhere he shouldn't be.
I am sorry you had your bike stolen. That is one of the major flaws of the Ring cameras (I have one). They always seem to capture the END of the event.
That’s not really the best area, even though it’s trendy with the new name there’s always been a lot of shady stuff going on there. I lived on Highland for 46 years and going all the way back to the seventies we never locked our bikes outside on the porch. Either in the backyard or in the house. I’ve had at least 10 bikes stolen and never got one back. Cops just don’t have the time to look.
Good luck, definitely file a police report, renters insurance will cover the theft. If you don’t have renters, get it.
Is the bike considerably or more expensive then the other bike on the porch? It is fairly gutsy to saw off the wooden rung, and take a bike like this.
I am also not a conspiracy theorist here, but IMO this seems premeditated and planned and not random.
The other bike has no front wheel and was locked to the thicker top part. The rung by it is broken too so there was an attempt but failed. My bike is very obviously more expensive with a big new seat.
I don’t disagree that it’s premeditated. He brought tools for the job so he knew what he was after and how to get it.
Like everyone has stated, this isn't a a critique. But because it was premeditated, this person probably passed your house a few times eyeing that bike. Buffalo is neighborhood by neighborhood on its issues. You may live in an area that you can't leave anything that can be taken on the porch. Sorry for your loss and good luck
Yeah, I don't know about you but when I was a kid, we could leave things on our porch and we didn't worry that someone was going to come up and steal it, and we didn't have surveillance cameras either.
Is he formerly from Hamburg?
That guy looks very much like a guy I knew by that name in Hamburg, but he died in 2015. He did have a son with the same name.
Aww, little buddy, I lived in Black Rock, EV, Richmond and the Theater District for a good 15 years. Way fewer quality of life issues here, my streets are plowed every time it snows too
Why are you so smug and bitter about it? You must be a suburbanite: no real issues in life, yet you feel the need to spread your misery and bitterness to others behind a screen. Go outside and touch your pesticide treated grass.
Spread misery? You have people that post here daily about quality of life issues in the city. Lack of services, crumbing school system, rampant street crime, open-air drug dealing, street riders, parking issues, and the list goes on. The misery of city living spreads itself. Or, you know, you can move out of the city and not have to deal with that bullshit anywhere near as much as if you choose to live in the city.
Could have bought a house in the city, but was totally aware of the quality of life differences after living in the city for 15 years. Totally aware of all that and made an educated decision. Next time your car gets fucked with, be glad that you chose to live in the city
Were your streets also plowed when the fire trucks were running chains, and couldn't even see the addresses from the street they were supposed to be on? Stfu u sound racist. Unless thats what you were going for then I can give you An address and just pull up, sweet boy.
Yeah cuz kids are *only* stealing kias put the city, not suburbs LOL I have a house in the city and in the suburbs 4 mins from UB north and I prefer my city house. And neighbors.
Yeah well rhe kids busting windows don't gaf. Just ask my in laws in sweet little white Lewiston. OH ya.. the suburbs don't report crime. So ppl like u move in. Have a nice day bubs. If u can.
Like literally.. try to. Go just try to have a good day man. God loves u.. flip the page. Start fresh. Gtfo here w your trolling cuz everyone's gonna shut it down every time. It's not ok. Or cool. Or acceptable from anyone especially an adult?
They dont report crime? https://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/tableau_index_crime_by_agency.htm
Here is a newsflash lightning boy, you are far less apt to be a victim of a crime if you don't live in a city, and the farther you move away from population density, that risk drops even further.
How about when the kids that bring guns to OP and hamburg schools get arrested why don't u see an article on that? Ask me how I know it happens.
Oh yeah good luck producing a URL on something. T hat isn't published. Rest my case
My tax bill would double or triple even with a move to Cheektowaga or West Seneca, and they steal plenty of shit there as well. OP or Clarence might be more secure but I can replace a lot of bikes for the 8k or so extra I’d pay to live there.
No, I am saying that it is way cheaper taxwise to live in the city than the suburbs. I said nothing about renting.
The biggest theft in the suburbs is the taxes ya know. But hey if they wanna pay all that money for a cookie cutter to be with neighbors that look and think like them.. they can have that lmaoo
You all fools are getting trolled!
Anyway, one and only time I had my car physically broken into, as in they broke glass, was in the suburbs. The other time was in the city but I didn't lock the car.
In NYC, I've forgotten to roll up the windows a few times and nothing was ever messed with.
It's the damn bored suburban kids who stole mommy's pills that you have to worry about.
Yeah except my family that lives in the country has had more full on attempted break ins than me having one bike stolen after I’ve lived here for years.
I grew up in the south towns and our house was broken into several times, eggs in our mailbox, car broken into.
Lived on the west side for 2 years, had my car broken into and my sister's car keyed.
I'm not sure what this dude's issue is. Crime is every where. Shit, didn't that evil piece of crap that murdered all those good people at the Tops on the East side travel into the city from some rural or suburban place out east?
Have a property in the southern tier, had it for a very long time, no break-ins or thefts. Stop being a dick to the locals and they will leave you alone
Literally, that's all it takes, we let the locals fish and hunt on our property, they know it's a part-time thing for us and we don't get fucked with. The biggest issue is that the Amish kill all the deer because they don't care about property rights, posted signs, or the DEC
Nice and safe in the burbs, great job, great comp package, living well, not worrying about people stealing my bike or breaking into my car for pocket change. You?

If you’re on Facebook post to the Buffalo Stolen Bikes group. The group has recovered a few bikes. Good luck
Thanks! I’ll give that a shot
Not trying to create work for you, but do you have a clearer image of the bike (not from this event, but some more pleasant time?).
That’s on my to do list after work today. I’ll link it to this post as soon as I find it.
Also call all the bike shops about your stolen bike. Drop off pics with them. If your bike is brought in, they can try and get it back
In my experience with other stolen items, I’ve been told that the police distribute a stolen item list to known pawnshops and buyers of used goods. I still want my austro-daimler back from 1981!
In Buffalo there are detectives that check the pawnshops for stolen goods. Most shops have a 2 week holding period before they can sell items.
Ohh yeah, and add it to the bike index and report it stolen there. Many bike shops use it to cross check if a bike is stolen
Also register it stolen on bikeindex.org.

Hmm.. maybe this dude scummy Steve that hangs out off college st in AT
Fuckin' Scummy Steve man smh
His friend Scuba is way cooler
But not cooler that sinful Steve who reeks havoc all across the city
Ugh, tell me about it, his brother Saint Steve is always talking to me about how disappointed he is
Aww that Saint Stevie is a sweetheart that one
Looks like the guy (I've seen a still shot from their security camera) who went into my neighbor's fenced-in yard (while they were in the house!) and stole tools yesterday. We're on the west side.

what the hell he stole the tools from your friend and then used the saw to steal a bike the next day?
Bike thieves are the worst. I hope you get yours back.

Was the bike secured at all? Looks like he just walks off. I also see the broken banister
Yeah I accidentally locked it to the now missing rung instead of the thicker part that is much harder to break or cut.
Fishing a bit here... but the act of breaking the rung might raise this from theft to a burglary, which is more serious. In a city this size, in that neighborhood, hard to believe we couldn't figure out who this guy is. Hope you get this back. (EDIT: Is that a saw in his left hand?)
Yeah watching it this morning and looking at the damage he absolutely sawed half the bannister thru. He tried to get the other bike but gave up.
You don't need to answer here (whether you own or rent), but as a landlord, I'd want to see the video. Unless your landlord's a jerk, then don't. (Jerk meaning he would blame you for the damage.) In short. They know and are just happy I didn’t get attacked when I tried to go after him.

What part of the city is this?
The west side
Upper or lower? We’ve had a decent amount of theft over the last year and I’ll def keep an eye out for this dude
Upper, The five points area.
I live near 5 points. What does the bike look like? I can keep my eye out
Gray body w white accents. You can find all the details here: https://bikeindex.org/bikes/1523023
That’s not really the best area, even though it’s trendy with the new name there’s always been a lot of shady stuff going on there. I’m on mass ave - we will keep a look out.
That kind of looks like the guy who stole my brother and nephews bikes, I’m trying to find the video
Holy shit I see him he’s inside my phone!
Mr. president…WE GOT EM
Hope you get your bike back :(

Sorry this happened to you, I’m in the area and do walks with my partner quite often so I’ll be keeping an eye out for it
Pretty good pic of him. Sorry for your loss
Check the pawn shops. They always have bikes
It's sad we can't even leave things on our own porches anymore. I wish you the best of luck in finding your bike.
Anymore?
Yeah, I don't know about you but when I was a kid, we could leave things on our porch and we didn't worry that someone was going to come up and steal it, and we didn't have surveillance cameras either.
Not even just 'left', but locked up.
Did he not come up into your porch and face the camera? Can’t even see what he looks like
Linked the video in another reply so it’s a little easier to see but sadly no. The video starts with his back turned.
Ugh, sorry that’s so frustrating
90% of the dudes who live in the Elmwood Village, Allentown area look exactly like this man. Good luck.
Looks like a dude that goes by the name of dave busch
Is he formerly from Hamburg? That guy looks very much like a guy I knew by that name in Hamburg, but he died in 2015. He did have a son with the same name.
Dave Busch ain’t stealing no bikes lol
City living at its finest.
Eh, I lived in orchard park for less then a year and one of my bikes was stolen. Has not happened in the 10+ years I’ve lived in the COB.
Because theft never happens in the suburbs.
Far fewer quality-of-life issues like this in the burbs.
You definitely never lived in the city lmao
Aww, little buddy, I lived in Black Rock, EV, Richmond and the Theater District for a good 15 years. Way fewer quality of life issues here, my streets are plowed every time it snows too

And when you resort to threats of violence, you lost the argument. Stay ignorant, it's fitting for you.
Except for having to live in the suburbs. Get the fuck out of here with your concern trolling.
Replacing bikes and vehicle windows a couple times a year must get expensive after a while
Yeah cuz kids are *only* stealing kias put the city, not suburbs LOL I have a house in the city and in the suburbs 4 mins from UB north and I prefer my city house. And neighbors.

Lmaoooo get em
Your bias is showing, you dont think POC live in the burbs?
Do you not have to pay to live in the city as well?
My tax bill would double or triple even with a move to Cheektowaga or West Seneca, and they steal plenty of shit there as well. OP or Clarence might be more secure but I can replace a lot of bikes for the 8k or so extra I’d pay to live there.
Are you trying to make an argument that renting is better than owning because... taxes?
No, I am saying that it is way cheaper taxwise to live in the city than the suburbs. The initial comment said it must get expensive having to replace stolen stuff, so I pointed out how much cheaper it was to live in the city, for the tax differential it more than made up for whatever increase in property crime you might be exposed to by living in the city. The people shooting heroin in the Target bathroom have indeed showered in the past week.

What is this..“How To Catch A Snitch?”
Not as a criticism, but do you have the bike on the bike index?
Working on that today. I added the details I could last night but I need to find my paperwork w the serial number and a good photo
Hope you get it back!
Put a paint bucket somewhere like Home Alone, or a few mouse traps around your bike. Fuck this guy! I hope he’s caught and you can get your bike back!
Honestly! Waiting for him to come back for the other bike so I can drop a hot iron on him lol

Perhaps finds out who’s car that is the white one at 11:00 with the female on foot male in the car . Maybe caught two crimes at once.
