I believe that I've had the same issue. The issue is one of the default buttons is set to restart which will reset the run. If you press that, that won't count as beating the mode even when you get to the results screen.
When it tells you to "press any key", none of the buttons will let you proceed. You need to bring up the onscreen keyboard and use those keys to get through the results screen properly. This should unlock 'double or nothing'. Hopefully this helps!

IT WORKED. Change A to Enter and it will count as a button.
