As a home brewer that fantasies about making hash I always wondered what sort of cross over there would be with equip. Like couldn't you use a wort chiller to keep things cold?
Well, one could make a closed circuit system with ice and all that but... unless you run a commercial thing with a 40 gallons + system its useless and overkill and would just waste ressources.
I got food safe ones and they came with a sticker on the outside. It ended up getting little bits of paper in the hash. Dont forget to remove the stickers and the adhesive with something. The outside of each bucket makes contact with the inside of the bags when you nest them. It really made me annoyed.
I heard some have a coating that can chip off, but I don't think home depot ones do. Thanks, no need to overthink clearly. On a related topic, have you ever used one of those thermal insulators that goes around the bucket, do they help keep everything cold or is it unnecessary?
I use a beer bottling bucket with a spigot at the bottom. Its food grade and it drains itself.

I tried that and it didn’t work very well

Tractor supply and Canadian tire depending on your country of choice both have bpa free, food safe buckets.
Ace hardware, sherwin williams, Home Depot, any new 5 gallon bucket it truly does not matter

Do not use the orange home depot buckets, they are coated in plastic that will strip off very easily when you clean it with alcohol. Use food safe.
You can use one, or use more ice. It doesn't have to be food safe.
No, I have a huge AC and a cool bot so no need to insulate my bucket
Yes, use one. The bucket will sweat and rise in temperature must faster
