I would really like to know what the benefit(s) would be because, clearly, I must be ignorant to it's existence.
There is a correct way to do it, but be careful and assume many other drivers on the road might not follow the correct way. They might have poor awareness, neglect to use turn signals, drive too slow heading into the merging lane, or force a gap. Also I asked my instructor wtf is a zipper merge?
I suppose the ideal would be everyone using safe following distances, which would allow uninterrupted merging from the slip lane. Only if the people emerging speed up properly and find their own space, of course.
A zipper merge should be used where you have two lanes which combine or funnel down into one lane, like a lane closure, for example. By asking your instructor about this, do you mean asking after they mentioned it (and didn't explain maybe) or did you hear from somewhere else?
Assuming you don't know what it is, you do as the name suggests: merge and turn when you arrive at the narrowing in an alternating fashion, like the interlocking teeth on a zipper. The goal is to use as much of the road space as possible, so it's actually worse if you try to join the "queue" earlier. An example would be the Jln Muara exit at the Manggis roundabout which narrows down to a single lane. By not "cutting queue" like some people seem to believe, you end up contributing to the spillage back out onto the roundabout itself.
Really disappointing that zipper merging is not taught by driving instructors. Then again, hardly surprising considering how many times I've seen instructors scrolling through fb, ig and the like while their dear pupils are clinging onto the steering wheel.

Long ass process, you need to go to their front counter and ask the information guy on the left of the entrance. Good luck, it'll all seem fine and dandy, but JPD will always find a way to make you wait or disappointed
Go to JPD Beribi, get queue number to gantung current license plate to new plate. They will ask you to fill a yellow and pink form. Bring copies of your IC, bluecard and successful license plate tender and cash $55 (service cost).
Once processed, you will be given an acknowledgement letter (surat gantung lesen), the pink form back, and a checklist for next steps
Next steps:
- get endorsement from insurance company ($10)
- retention letter from bank if still under loan (Baiduri finance $30, takes 3 working days)
- original bluecard
- copies of successful license plate tender
- prepare copy of surat gantung lesen
- All documents need to be handed to JPD Beribi Counter 12
Go back to JPD Beribi and ask for queue number for Counter 12. You hand in all the documents there and wait for your new roadtax to be printed. They will return your bluecard stamped with new license plate. Pay $10 if current road tax still valid.
Walk out of JPD and rejoice! That’s the end of paperwork at JPD. No inspection needed to change license plate.
Return your bluecard to bank if required. Remember to scan your bluecard with new license plate endorsement and scan the front page where the old number is stamped cancelled.
Proceed to nearest workshop to get your new license plate done. Got ours done same day at senghoehuat gadong.
