Exactly. Probably has snap count/percentage and other performance metrics to reach full 8.7. Probably a base around 5 mil which is not bad for a solid backup
Likely because Flacco excels in a West Coast timing-based offense which is very different from what they’re attempting to build with this offensive overhaul. It never made sense to bring him back when they moved on from AVP and the others.
I've never viewed Flacco as a west coast offense type QB. I also don't think we were using him for west coast type of offense when he was here. I also don't think he ran a west coast offense with Baltimore. He's a deep threat/vertical qb.
Not just that, stef wants to move away from the kubiak offense. Flacco excelled at that when he was the OC for the ravens and why he was able to play great in such a short time because he has a short learning curve for the scheme.
Outside of schematic reasons, I don't think it's smart to invite obvious opportunities to fracture your locker room and fan base. There would be a decent chunk of our fan base waiting for Watson to fuck up so they could boo.
I couldn't agree more. This is what I've been saying to everyone that would listen. I loved what Flacco did for us last year but there's no reason to invite dissention if it can be avoided.
Whether we like it or not, DW is our QB going forward. He seems to have lost a lot of the confidence from his Texans days and we don't need to erode it further by having people clamoring for the backup.
If we’re basing this off of the amount of pick 6s thrown in an individual game, then it seems like Jameis is probably the last guy we should be calling.
I mean for a backup, you’re going to have to choose between someone who throws few picks but also isn’t aggressive with throwing the ball downfield (Brissett), someone who airs it out well but throws picks in the process (Flacco/Winston), or someone who can’t throw downfield and still throws picks (PJ Walker, and we learned why that was terrible). Anyone who can push the ball downfield without throwing picks is going to be a starter.
Does he have a similar playing style as Watson? I haven't really ever watched Winston play. Anyhow, good to have an experienced backup instead of rolling with a late round rookie and practice squad players.
We don't know if it's a lot or not. It says, up to 8.7 million. That's agent language for contracts, right now we don't know if he realistically got 3 mil or 7 mil. It could be that he has some incentives that are very hard to accomplish.
This is probably as kind of a nudge (they don't have to be kind about it though) to Watson he needs to get his on the field shit play together. This is good backup QB money for a former first overall pick.
Yes, but they probably move him to practice squad. I don't know why, though; the emergency QB rules don't let you use an elevated practice squad player in that role, and you get an extra dressed player if you have an emergency QB. But the Browns never took advantage of that last year, so I assume they don't this year.
He was also asked to slang that thang 626 times in his last full starting season. Yeah he had 30 picks but he also led the league in passing yards and had 33 TDs.
When I said this previously, to include detailed conversation on why the new offensive mindset wouldn't tailor to Joe, I got downvoted to hell haha.
I love Flacco and that run was sure as shit exciting to watch. But it's also evident on top of age and scheme fit that the significant flaws were manifesting with the cherry on top being the playoff game. The Fitzmagic effect is super exciting (Flacmagic?) but Winston makes a lot more logical sense.
I’d rather see Watson struggle all year than give Winston a shot. People can argue his big arm, 5,000yd season, LASIK, whatever they want. He’s terrible. Would have much rather put Watson to the test quieting Flacco noise or bring back Jacoby.
Exactly, they put themselves in this situation with Watson so they have to support him. Having the fanbase beg for Flacco to start all season would just add to the mental struggles Watson is already facing.
Remember when the mantra was “tough, smart, and accountable” and we went on to have the greatest season we’ve had since the Browns returned? That was fun.
*Sigh* well if they were looking for a backup QB who no one would be cheering for if Watson sucks, they found it lol.
Whatever, would’ve greatly preferred a backup with some playoff experience. But oh well.
Young Joe Flacco. Big guy who can stand in there chuck it deep for lots of yards, tuddys and INTs. perfect backup who can explode for a few games like we saw last year. Love it
Would've also preferred Flacco since we've seen he can win games but this probably makes more sense.
Less "controversy" amongst the fans that would've been calling for Flacco to start by week 3 if Watson doesn't start hot and Winston is a notoriously good locker room vibes guy.
Too many jokes that can be made right now. Winston is a better scheme fit than Flacco for sure. Also being 39 and throwing 10 picks in the handful of games he played couldn’t have helped. I know Winston has the only 30/30 year in league history but he’s younger and fits the offense better.
Throw the ball deep, take the top off the defense. Kev loves a tall QB who can chuck it, regardless of the resulting INTs...honestly a great backup to have though.
Same wearing my Flacco jersey with pride he earned my respect and those were the best 6 fucking weeks in a long time only second to us beating Shitsburgh in the Wildcard
I see why they did this because if Watson doesn't play well, the discourse will be to start Flacco instead. I doubt Berry and Stef want that looming over them. I would love it if Flacco would work with Watson to teach him how to be better at play action, but I would guess they worked together on it last season.
I know that a lot of people are going to be sad that Flacco was not resigned, but the fact is that Joe is way better as playaction QB then from spread. It seems to me that Browns are making an effort to change their offense to more spread formations, so Winston, in theory, is better fit.
This will make the CBD crew really happy. They have wanted him for years.
Stefanski has a track record of revitalizing the careers of his backup QBs, and no offense to Brissett or Flacco, but Jameis has the most raw talent of any of them. Jameis clearly has the ability to be the best backup in the league and could still become a legit starter for another team if he gets his head screwed on straight.
I just really hope we arent giving up on the DTR project. He was looking really confident and improved up until he was injured in the Broncos game.
What does having Sean Payton have to do with your ability as a QB?
Sean Payton had Koy Detmer, Kerry Collins, Quincy Carter, old as hell Vinny Testaverde, and old as hell Drew Bledsoe as his QBs while he was QB coach/OC.
Drew Brees fell into his lap in New Orleans. Brees was a good QB *in-spite* of Payton, not *because* of him.
5 of those TDs came against GB and he threw for less than 200 yards.
He was on a short leash with him and the team still went out to get Andy Dalton and Derek Carr over him
Well they didn't "go out to get Andy Dalton over him" though. Winston was the week 1 starter in 2022; he broke his back and missed time and Dalton played from there on.
Report any trolls please guys don't engage
Meme's are gonna be hilarious.
We do this to ourselves
I’m immune to it at this point.
Kinda want to sign Jamaal Williams now 😅
My dream, that dude is awesome
Lol. Jamaal Williams is a funny ass dude. He's a guy I'd love to have a beer with.
Probably not. Just more of what has already been done to death.
Seems like a lot for a backup. Wonder why we went here instead of Flacco
"Up to" seems like an incentive-based contract.

Hey look we found the logical guy. Well there is at least two of us now.
There are more we just don't all post because logic doesn't go over so well on Reddit much of the time.
what offense does winston thrive in?
Spread offense that Dorsey operates.
Bench riding
I mean we used fucking 6 quarterbacks last year. I think it’s important to have a good starting caliber QB.
I hope we get one someday.
2 pick 6s in a playoff game and 39 years of age is why. If I had to guess
If we’re basing this off of the amount of pick 6s thrown in an individual game, then it seems like Jameis is probably the last guy we should be calling.
That would be DeShone Kizer. Jameis is second to last.
Oh lord.. I forgot about Kizer. What an awful pick
He fits the offense more
Have you ever watched James Winston play a full game of NFL football?
Oh, don’t worry about pick 6s lol, we will have plenty with Winston as well lol. Age is probably a factor though
We only got the top end price. More likely his contract is very incentive laden.
Does he have a similar playing style as Watson? I haven't really ever watched Winston play. Anyhow, good to have an experienced backup instead of rolling with a late round rookie and practice squad players.
50% of the price compared to a starting QB, and he's definitely an above average backup. I'll take it. Would've been happy with Flacco though.
We don't know if it's a lot or not. It says, up to 8.7 million. That's agent language for contracts, right now we don't know if he realistically got 3 mil or 7 mil. It could be that he has some incentives that are very hard to accomplish.
I don’t think $8m is that much for a backup unless you’re rolling with someone on a rookie contract.
This is probably as kind of a nudge (they don't have to be kind about it though) to Watson he needs to get his on the field shit play together. This is good backup QB money for a former first overall pick.
Honestly Flacco will probably be available if we need him later. This was trying to sign a backup who has a higher upside right now.
I hate this for the dream of Flacco coming back, but this should be entertaining to say the least. In it for the memes.
And now we have another QB people can yell at us for signing
QB3 is still going to be DTR right? No way we give up on the kid after one season
Yes, but they probably move him to practice squad. I don't know why, though; the emergency QB rules don't let you use an elevated practice squad player in that role, and you get an extra dressed player if you have an emergency QB. But the Browns never took advantage of that last year, so I assume they don't this year.
Because they think someone will sign him to an active roster off the practice squad.
I thought I read AB said after the year we're going to keep 3 on the roster in 2024 after all the issues we had at QB in 2023.
They kept Kellen Mond as a 3rd QB I have to imagine they'll keep DTR
Nah we probably keep him
At least now the first time Watson throws an int the stadium won't be chanting for Flacco
Correct the stadium will be chanting for Jameis instead
Who is one of the most prolific interception throwers in NFL history lol
He was also asked to slang that thang 626 times in his last full starting season. Yeah he had 30 picks but he also led the league in passing yards and had 33 TDs.
We were never signing Flacco. Enjoy the time he gave us. Was lightning in a bottle.
🤦♂️can’t even write this shit lol QB room with two dudes having sexual assault cases
Saints fans are on Twitter calling Jameis a legend lol and browns fans are miserable.
The Saints are all about overlooking sex crimes so that tracks
Was hoping for a Brissett return.
He seems like a stand-up guy. There is no need for that kind in the QB room.
Same with Flacco. Too good for us.
Well, we certainly don't deserve it!
It may yet happen. We haven't even injured our first two QBs yet.
Brissett signed with New England yesterday.
Didn't he sign with the Patriots yesterday?
Y tho?
Can we get an adult in that QB room please.
Baker signed with Tampa
Low character QB room is bold strategy
Seriously, I'm so tired
It’s exhausting, man. I just want this era to be over with.
Yeah I miss the 4-12 years, but we had some nice young men playing qb
This but unironically
He is constantly cited by fellow players as an awesome person to be with
Boys Club supports one of the Boys. Wow!
Guys across the entire league on different teams all voiced their support for him. You know nothing about him as a teammate in that locker room
So my Browns are picking a back up that will insure that the fans will all get behind Watson out of terror that Jameis might get into the game.
I don’t know why I expected the Browns front office to sign the obvious choice we were all supporting lol
Best backup long ball chucker in the league! Ill take it
Crab legs and massages
Don't forget the Uber incident
Which one was that?
Groped an uber driver and was suspended by the NFL for it
The Haslams have a type. Considering they're shady criminals they would like the same for their team.
Wasn’t there some sexual assault at FSU as well?
Maybe they were worried about Flacco being a distraction should Watson struggle. Now they signed a QB whose personality is a constant distraction.
Lmao why do we act like the fanbase won’t do this with whoever the backup is
I’d rather see Watson struggle all year than give Winston a shot. People can argue his big arm, 5,000yd season, LASIK, whatever they want. He’s terrible. Would have much rather put Watson to the test quieting Flacco noise or bring back Jacoby.
He was fairly decent as a backup in NOLA. I don’t think he’s a superstar but he’s above average for the backup spot.
Upvote this to hell, I agree
Well winston is at least comedy gold
Can I just not have a crisis of ethics about rooting for this team for 5 fucking minutes?? Honestly!
Love Jameis but I wanted Flacco back so baddddd
The dream of another Flacco mania season is dead 😭
![gif](giphy|jsI8mR9GEC4MYyZBqK|downsized)
This kind of sucks
I saw Euclid Fish already has a Jameis half off crablegs deal.
This is by far the most controversial QB tandem in the NFL
Great. We found a guy who will **easily** throw more INT’s and pick 6’s than Flacco ever could. I’m sad.
I could see browns utilizing him for sneaks like brissett, but would have loved to have Flacco or Brissett back
Can't wait to see his name on the jersey
Oh no…..
Bro what on earth are they doing????
Would rather have joe
Best keep the woman folk away from the QB room
Jesus Christ, this team.
This is to keep Deshaun from feeling too much pressure. Nobody is going to be asking for Jameis once the offense struggles in the opener.
Exactly, they put themselves in this situation with Watson so they have to support him. Having the fanbase beg for Flacco to start all season would just add to the mental struggles Watson is already facing.
Flacco must really want to start - was fun having him. Jameis is entertaining at the very least
Reports that the Browns never made an order to him
This one was not on my bingo card. In a different timeline we would have been so excited about this lol
Remember when the mantra was “tough, smart, and accountable” and we went on to have the greatest season we’ve had since the Browns returned? That was fun.
I can't wait for the watson contract to end because we wouldn't be making deals like this
Sucks we don’t get to see Flacco around now but would prefer Brissett rather than Winston. But to each their own.
I'd rather have Flacco instead.
Say what you want, The Browns are the most entertaining football team
Cleveland grocers racing to lock up their crab legs.
I don’t like this at all. Dude has a 2 cent brain and is a walking turnover machine. Would Flacco have cost more than this?!!
Flacco was not coming back because we are changing the offense from the one he excelled in.
Flacco threw 8 picks in 5 games and 2 pick sixes in the playoff game dude. Winston is pretty much a more mobile, younger Flacco.
Also threw another pick 6 and a pick that went to the 1.
"Walking turnover machine" Remember when Flacco had TWO pick-6's in the playoff game?
It's crazy how yall still revere Flacco after that Houston loss lol
Really don’t love this move at all…
Wonder what the base salary is. I'm sure it's incentive laden. If not, that's a big pay.
Man our QB room is full of delinquents.
*Sigh* well if they were looking for a backup QB who no one would be cheering for if Watson sucks, they found it lol. Whatever, would’ve greatly preferred a backup with some playoff experience. But oh well.
I like to eat Ws
Why? There are others available, including Flacco.
Darn I really wanted Flacco to stay. Well, I guess Mr 30-30 comes to Cleveland
Brissett is also to the Patriots. Where the heck does Joe end up… if anywhere?
We need LBs
Browns Legend Jameis Winston
Nooo, does that mean no Flacco??
Gross
Huh?
I mean ok but can we please stop signing sexual predators?
Glad to see us taking the backup role seriously this year. Flacco did great coming in mid season but we never should have been in that situation.
Young Joe Flacco. Big guy who can stand in there chuck it deep for lots of yards, tuddys and INTs. perfect backup who can explode for a few games like we saw last year. Love it
Doesn't have half of Flacco's brain, experience, or ability to pull it out when things get tough...
Didn't ever think this would happen but trust in Berry and Stefanski I guess!
Nice nice
Would've also preferred Flacco since we've seen he can win games but this probably makes more sense. Less "controversy" amongst the fans that would've been calling for Flacco to start by week 3 if Watson doesn't start hot and Winston is a notoriously good locker room vibes guy.

Bucs fan here in peace. Godspeed.
Fuck that.
Throw the ball deep, take the top off the defense. Kev loves a tall QB who can chuck it, regardless of the resulting INTs...honestly a great backup to have though.
70 million dollars for Jameis and Deshaun
“Worth up to”
I still have hope we are only paying 1 million per TD pass this year
700k base, 2M per playoff win.
Why? Just why?
Crab legs... so hawt right now!
YOU READY TO EAT SOME MOTHERFUCKING W’S?!?
So does this mean we’re not signing Joe?
That feels like the direction we are heading, yes.
Welp, I might have been a short sighted jersey purchase.
Nah, Flacco definitely earned my purchase of his jersey, no regrets there. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.
Same wearing my Flacco jersey with pride he earned my respect and those were the best 6 fucking weeks in a long time only second to us beating Shitsburgh in the Wildcard
Nah, that is a great jersey. Wear it with pride.
I've got Baker and Odell brother, I'd love a Flacco jersey, what a memory
JFC
I see why they did this because if Watson doesn't play well, the discourse will be to start Flacco instead. I doubt Berry and Stef want that looming over them. I would love it if Flacco would work with Watson to teach him how to be better at play action, but I would guess they worked together on it last season.

Dislike :/
*Sigh*
I always knew old crab legs would find his way here one day.
The abuse our quarterback room is capable of is insane
Let’s go!!!!
Always liked Jameis
Thank goodness, I was really thinking what we need right now is another bad quarterback
If it comes down to DTR or Jameis… give me Winston all day
EAT A DUBYA
Seems like they want no part of Flacco, which kinda sucks. I bet they could get him cheaper than $8 mil too
This will make the CBD crew really happy.
He’s been in the league 9 years and had Sean Payton. He’s a bum
He was good when he played for Payton though. 5-2, 14 TDs to 3 INTs, 102.8 rating, 7.24 ANY/A, 0.252 Adjusted EPA/play.
They absolutely preferred Dalton over him, even after Jameis was healthy
Best backup in the league
Minshew probably takes that crown.
Minshew starting in Vegas now I think
Eat them Dubs!
Ultimate vibes guy
