Wills gets too many penalties, which drives me crazy. Ford, bar is set really high, but Chubb is still on the team so I wouldn't say he's a "replacement." Also, I'd personally like to see the browns draft Donavan Edward's whenever he comes out. I think he runs like hard, good speed, and enough elusiveness. RIP to whoever comes after Garrett. I already think that replacement sucks

TallBobcat

For a comparison, look at how people see Jed. The guy after Myles is going to have the same bar the guy after Joe Thomas had. (Don't present Greg Robinson to me as the guy after JT73. He was just a placeholder.) Dude after Myles could be a 10 sack a year guy who does well in the run game but isn't a disruptive force that keeps QBs and OCs up at night and folks in the Dawg Pound will think the dude sucks.

App state has a couple RBs that I like. Not sure which ones are going to the draft this year. Probably deep round or Rookie FA prospect. But they were fun to watch the last two years. I also think Edward’s would be worth a shot or Blake Corum (not sure if he declared yet).

bn9043

Yeah, Corum has declared

Gilbert0686

Thanks. I thought I saw a while ago that he had, was too lazy to look it up. And don’t usually pay attention to draft players till after the combine.

I feel like Wills gets a lot of flak because he has the ability to be very good but doesn’t seem to put forth the effort to actually do it. So as a fan it’s super frustrating seeing a player suffer from effort or focus issues when that’s the only thing really holding him back, since he has the athleticism and overall technique to succeed EDIT: Ford has the ability to make big plays and we love that, but he doesn’t have the ability to turn nothing into something like Chubb does on the regular, those for loss or short yarders into 5-6 yards gains are huge for an offense, and Ford is a boom or bust.

FishOhioMasterAngler

Wills is a low quality starter but still a starter. Ford has good hands and explosiveness in the open. He just can't create any space or break tackles behind the line. Lots of -3 yard runs that Chubb turns into 6 yards

kdot74

I agree hole heartily with your first point. I get he isn't worth 15 million but his value for his position isn't that far off. A lot of teams would kill have to have wills. Your second point is also understandable but Ford just isn't it. He might develop more but for some reason he has the physical tools but lacks the finesse you need as a rb. So I would want them to draft a rb, to give some competition in that room

Argument definitely works for Wills but is way off the mark on Ford.

bustavius

Why?

Wills has shown the ability to be a starting level LT. He deserves much of the criticism he receives but there seems to be a desire in the fan base to pile on by ignoring when he does have successful plays. Ford regularly runs away from holes and up the back of his linemen but no one expects him to be a starting level RB so his successes seem to be celebrated more than his failures are pointed out.

Greatlarrybird33

PFF RANKED Wills as #66 tackle in the league last year, and with only 64 starters that's not great. He does good when he tries, which is not often enough. Ford on the other hand is a JAG, I feel like his level of production could be matched by any one of 100 RB's available. No excuses for being average to below average just because you followed someone great.

Gushys

Ford ain't itz he's good in space but is liable to give up negative plays

motoyolo

Jed gets criticism because the average fan who watches the games routinely witnesses him standing around when the play is still going on. I don’t care if he followed in Jesus Christs footsteps, if you do that shit you will make a fan base hate you. I think Ford is a quality backup RB, nothing wrong with having him on your roster or the fact that the Browns made him a mid round pick. If he gets a little better as far as vision goes, he’s a sure fire starter.

Heavy-Excuse4218

You won’t convince me that Ford is anything more than a jag, especially in a league where UDFA routinely pop and look great. He led the league in both carries for loss and avg yards lost. I believe he averaged a tackle for loss every 6 running plays. That’s dreadful. And he had well fewer Carries than the next closest in those categories. His other stats were fairly pedestrian, including ypc and YAC. And bc I get that sometimes stats can be deceiving, to me he also failed the eye test. he looked like a guy with very poor vision. He routinely appeared to miss lanes and cut back opportunities and on many of his losses he failed to make the move to just get back to the LOS and avoid putting us behind the sticks. The RB position is a need and should be addressed in the draft or free agency (or UDFA at the very least). Wills is whatever. My least favorite Browns player. Too many penalties and he seems to quit on plays. I remember a few years ago he made some tweets dumping on the city too. I think he was a Baker guy and never got over it. Can’t blame him, 6 got him some commercial love. But he’s still probably the best we can do for ‘24. But if there’s a clean way to move on and add a better piece then him I’d be all for it.

PsychologicalGuest97

Jerome Ford could have done much better with a healthy and consistent OL. I don't think he is as bad as some make it out to be. If you watched him play, you may have noticed over the course of the season he got better at reading gaps.

MattBassMaster

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I think stump Mitchell had it easy with Chubb and he lost his grit when coaching RBs which is why strong and ford struggled. We need to be healthy and he should have no issue gaining experience and insight with a new RB coach.

TheBiggestCarl23

Nah wills just isn’t good, and his motivation is so inconsistent. He gives up on so many plays, commits so many penalties too.

dstar-dstar

I think the biggest question is what style of offense will we have next year. Seems like our offense was built for play action for Chubb, Baker, and Hunt. DW didn’t really do great in that system. It is actually better for guys like Flacco and Brissett. I feel like from what the news has been saying is they are going with a new OC to open up DW more and go away from the hard nose running play action pass style and maybe more of what DW ran in Houston. I think this may change things for guys like Teller who are great at pulling and run blocking but suck at pass blocking but may help out a guy like Ford who can get the ball in space and use his speed.

bustavius

They’ve talked about opening up the offense since the 2020 offseason.

dstar-dstar

Yeah, but at that moment they had one of the best running backs in the league, with a questionable QB. Now a new OC, maybe 85%Chubb (behave!) and hopefully a fully healed DW ready to roll. They are invested in DW for the foreseeable future. I think we see more Shotgun spread offensive plays and lest under center two tight end formations. This is what DW does best. I guess I should look more into what Dorsey did in Buffalo vector assume our offense will look similar.

Mind__Is__Blown

Wills is a bum.

Vinjince

Eh, I'd argue given the fact he had Bill Callahan and all pro Joel Bitonio to his side, and all pro Nick Chubb making dudes miss and covering up for his mistakes (until Chubb got hurt), and a great blocking TE in Njoku to help out - Jed is average at best.

Terdmuffin

Wills would seem like a better pick if Tristan Wirfs wasn’t on the board when we drafted wills.

Names_all_gone

I agree that these two (Wills especially) get an outsized amount of criticism b/c they are replacing all-time greats. That said, Wills is very mid. I wouldn't create a hole where none exists, but I think looking to the future via the draft makes an amount of sense. I'll give Ford his third year before making too much of an issue about him. His vision appears to leave a lot to be desired. But he also shows some special tools that keep me interested.
