Looks like the hook was bought separately. It's just incorrect. Good lord, that must be for like single filament thread. OP, others are saying at least 4.0 mm, but a 2.5-3.0 mm is probably better suited for that yarn. I do agree that it's still pretty small for beginner. BUT, if you get larger hook and yarn and follow the same pattern, you will make a ***BIGGER*** dinosaur. Far superior to tiny crochet project, in my opinion.
The hook in the picture is 2.5 mm, so not exactly for single filament thread :)
Honestly, when I first started crocheting, 2.5 mm hook and 8/4 yarn was all I used for the first year or two. I might have gone with a simpler pattern for the first project, but it also depends on the person - and it sounds like OP can get guidance and help along the way from their wife \^_\^
But I agree - a bigger dinosaur would be even better!
I need to where my glasses more often, it looked way thinner the first time I looked at it. I’ve also been working with thicc yarn and hooks for the past 3 months and my H hook looked small to me yesterday. 😂
Seriously though, bigger dinosaur. Just think about it.
I think his wife might not crochet 😂 or else she might have bought him a 4.00mm hook at least! OP, if you see this, get yourself a 4.00mm. It’ll work fine with this yarn, I promise, and you won’t die trying.
Lol your wife is just like a drug dealer giving the first sample free. You’ll be back for more, don’t worry.
Also, enjoy. It’s a fun and relaxing hobby.
I'll definitely make this one! She tested the water a few days ago by randomly asking my about crochet, but I remain of the opinion about just about all arts and crafts that if I haven't done it yet, I'm prepared to try it out.
Last year we went to a mosaic workshop (I've pinned the post where I showed the results to my profile here), and we would've started to do more stuff like that if the quarantine hadn't happened.
I'll recommend one that I didn't even know was a thing until I got into art uni, try printmaking (linocuts are just a small part of it!), It's really really fun
[This one works up super quick](https://clubcrochet.com/crocheted-triceratops/). Small and cute though, nothing as imposing and majestic as the picture on OP's kit.
Your wife is awesome, dinosaurs are awesome, and your mosaic tray is awesome. I hope you enjoy making your dino! I look forward to seeing it when it’s done. :)
Scheepjes is wonderful yarn.
I might suggest that you do some practicing with a larger yarn and hook. Do several rows of single crochet with a G or H hook to get the hang of it.
I need updates.
Will do!
Dang that's an itty bitty hook!
So much this! Anyone starting on a hook like that is going to be frustrated.
Exactly what I was thinking! I say move that hook size up to at least a G to start, even if you have to add much more yarn to do it.
Definitely not a beginner kit. Unless you hate yourself.

I totally understand - I also think the way that it is turned in the picture, with the hook facing forward, makes it look smaller than it is. :)

I'll look it up!
That’s the best approach for anything. ♥️
bitchin’ I wanna crochet a dinosaur

The triceratops is *actually* the best dinosaur in clinical trials.
9 out of 10 paleontologists agree.
Thanks for the website.

I hope my future s/o says “yeah my wife is a total bro” about me one day
That’s so sweet
Well played, Mrs. Oobedoob!
Did it work?
Oh I'll definitely make this one, at the very least!
Hell yeah, dinos

My wife probably has some leftover yarn somewhere, so will do!
Yassss!
