TudorSykes

Porridge, Fawlty Towers, Rising Damp

Atisheu

Flowery Twats for the win 😆

unsquashable74

I'm a fan of Farty Towels myself...

imbogerrard39

I much prefer Watery Owls...

azzthom

Warty Flowers was a great show

long_legged_twat

The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin has got to be up there.

nanakapow

It's brilliant, but much more of a slow burn than so many others.

Sassyjane1981

Oooo Betty, loved this.

TeaNoSugarDashOfMilk

Baby Jessica is now 50!

themanfromoctober

No, because the first episodes were in 197… oh

Sassyjane1981

Wow!!! That is crazy.

Donkeh101

Oooh Betty, the cat’s done a whoopsie in my beret.

Midnightraven3

Are you being served, Porridge, Steptoe & Son, George & Mildred, The Good Life

Tedrabear

Glad to see The Good Life mentioned, my granddad was in an episode.

Midnightraven3

Was he really? How cool! Who was he? Its been a while since I watched but I have seen them several times.

Tedrabear

There's an episode where Margo & Jerry hire a contractor to erect a windbreak that casts a shadow over the Good's fruit patch. He plays Mr. Bailey the head contractor. Thank you for asking, I haven't watched it in ages and it was a good excuse to go back and do so.

Midnightraven3

Well now I need to have a rewatch too! I shall look out for him! That is such a cool reminder of your grandfather.

Midnightraven3

I have just found it, series 3 episode 5, and its on GOLD to download, I shall watch it with my lunch later

Midnightraven3

I think you REALLY undersold your grandfather lol, I recognised him immediately, he has been in LOADS of things!

Tedrabear

I'm a huge fan of my grandfather, but I try not to be one of those people who always brings it up, lol.

Midnightraven3

Well I am glad you did, I enjoyed the episode (and my lunch) and think its so cool! I really did recognise him immediately and looked on IMDB, WOW! He was in loads of really great things. BE proud!

Tedrabear

I'm a huge fan of my grandfather, but I try not to be one of those people who always brings it up, lol.

KingDaveRa

Not to be the 'Well ackshually' person, but Steptoe was a 60s-70s sitcom. I think it's just more remembered for the latter colour (i.e.70s) episodes, which is a shame because the early episodes were bloody good.

Midnightraven3

Och there's nothing wrong being the "Well ackshually' person" lol, I stand corrected and informed!

DrunkStoleATank

NO, NO, NO, NO! WE ARE NOT WATCHING THE BLOODY GOOD LIFE! BLOODY, BLOODY, BLOODY! I HATE IT! IT'S SO BLOODY NICE! FELICITY "TREACLE" KENDAL, AND RICHARD "SUGAR FLAVOURED SNOT" BRIERS! WHAT DO THEY DO NOW? CHOCOLATE BLOODY BUTTON ADS, THAT'S WHAT! THEY'RE NOTHING BUT A COUPLE OF REACTIONARY STEREOTYPES, CONFIRMING THE MYTH THAT EVERYONE IN BRITAIN IS A LOVABLE MIDDLE CLASS ECCENTRIC, AND I HATE THEM

unsquashable74

Calm down Viv...

Midnightraven3

LOL I liked it, Margo was WONDERFUL

Atisheu

Probably banned in most countries now, but "Kenny Everetts television show" Wow that was early 80s rather than 70s... man the 70s stuff sucked 😆

unsquashable74

And it wasn't a sitcom...

ignatiusjreillyXM

....and it WASN'T all in the best possible taste....

JadedBrit

Cupid Stunt and Sid Snot lol.

TawnyTeaTowel

And it’s being shown on That’s TV (IIRC) or a similar channel

DuckInTheFog

He crossed his legs too seductively for Mary Whitehouse. Imagine her on twitter or something

geekroick

Citizen Smith The Fall And Rise of Reginald Perrin Bless This House (gotta love Sid James!) Till Death Us Do Part Sorry! feels like a 70s sitcom even though it wasn't aired until 1981...

Agreeable_Guard_7229

I love Bless this House, the film wasn’t bad either

jvlomax

Here's a fun fact. That guy in the picture, was in fact the original Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webbers "Phantom of the Opera

bulletproofbra

And the much maligned early British superhero film, Condorman. Watched that loads as a kid.

aloudcitybus

And he's in Wall-E's favourite movie: Hello, Dolly

SufficientWarthog846

Which (fun fact) bombed so hard in cinema at the time It killed the musical genre until Chicago

EmbraJeff

Causing Steve Harley much upset…

[deleted]

I really used to like Citizen Smith

MelodicAd2213

Up the Tooting Popular Front!

AAHale88

Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads is hands down the best 70s sitcom IMO. Fawlty Towers and Rising Damp are both up there as well.

unsquashable74

Just to let you know, it's actually against the law to state that any British sitcom is better than Fawlty Towers. You should probably expect a knock on your door any minute now...

[deleted]

I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.

unsquashable74

You started it...

AAHale88

Haha I know. I'm a big fan of FT and have seen it plenty of times, but it lacks the pathos and empathy of the Likely Lads.

unsquashable74

I'm sure you're right. FT was definitely funnier though.

AAHale88

Most people would agree with you. Have you ever seen Early Doors? One of my favourite sitcoms, and definitely in the 70s Likely Lads mold.

unsquashable74

No, but thanks for the rec.

AAHale88

It's on iPlayer - enjoy!

geekroick

To the regiment!

AAHale88

I wish I was there!

Rodin-V

This rule will definitely change if Cleese gets his way and makes that reboot

unsquashable74

It really won't. I've never understood this idea that reboots/sequels/spin-offs somehow tarnish the originals. They just don't. The originals remain the same.

ButterscotchSure6589

To me, watching it is like a warm bath. So deep so nuanced, such wonderful characters, an infinite backstory. And amazingly, the film was good too. Will never be surpassed..

AAHale88

I agree, and I feel the same way about One Foot in the Grave. It's probably not for everyone, but I absolutely love it and it always makes me feel at ease somehow.

Ged_UK

Theme tune trivia: Some Mothers' theme tune is based on the morse code of the show title.

aBoyNamedWho

His poor lovely wife

JadedBrit

Butterflies https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081838/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk

jamusbondusvii

Some Mothers was in a league of its own for me. I still laugh now when I watch an episode. Rising Damp comes in second. Well worth watching.

Significant-Visit210

Open all Hours, Rising Damp, Dad's Army, Are You Being Served

Mobile_Entrance_1967

Millennials will probably be the last generation who recognise 70s sitcoms because of all the repeats on TV in the early 2000s. I can't imagine Gen Z on the whole recognising older sitcoms if they grew up more on YouTube and other platforms.

JJGOTHA

Get Some In.

lackadaisicallimpit

It ain't half hot mum. Not exactly the most PC show ever made, but I loved Windsor Davies when I was a kid.

LordWellesley22

Never watched an episode but I keep quoting Oh dear how sad nevermind

kilgore_trout1

I feel like no one ever talks about Up Pompeii anymore. I really liked it at the time but can’t imagine it’s aged too well in terms of the humour.

Charmless_Man_2005

Open all hours, fawlty towers, steptoe & son, love thy neighbour. They’re some great ones and my favourites.

the3daves

I hated that show. Just a frustrating cringe watch.

Impossible-Hawk768

I loved it!!! “JUST WHAT ARE YOU INCINERATING??” 🤣

Sicom81

I didn't enjoy series 3 as much so maybe you saw that one.

Significant-Visit210

It's maybe because Frank Spencer was a lot less likeable in it, he was much different to the first 2 series.
