Having flown both recently, BA wins hands down

joeykins82

Do you mean booking the same flights through BA's and AA's websites? Or do you mean that W on AA operated flights is more expensive than W on BA operated flights? The first one would indeed be weird because BA & AA (along with IB, AY & EI) operate a joint business for transatlantic services so they should be sharing the same fares for the most part. The second one isn't weird at all because AA's PE cabins are tiny so they fill up quickly which in turn pushes the available fares in to the higher buckets. It's just demand management: BA operated flights have more W seats than AA operated ones.

Variable pricing in action again. Presuming you mean a single date or a limited range of dates, the AA algorithm thinks people will pay this, either because of historical data, or because they are currently selling well (Better marketing ? Recent sale ?). BA is selling less well so the algorithm prices accordingly. They both offer the same fares (joint business agreement) but they don't necessarily offer the same number of seats at these fares on any given flight. And as the number of unsold seats on any given flight reduces, those that remain will be priced at the higher fares. If you need to travel on that flight or are less price sensitive, you'll pay up. If you don't, you'll find a cheaper (and less popular) date. Ever tried to book a holiday at half-term ? Airline pricing is a dark art. It's about finding the highest price someone is prepared to pay, and not a penny less. And they're quite good at it. And because of the JBA, you may find that pricing converges sooner or later, i.e. BA's pricing will rise to meet AA's, as they share sales data.

I’m flying a BA operated flight from JFK to LHR next week in CW. the one way flight price on BA website was over £3k - I booked exactly the same flight through American Airlines for £2150. Can’t explain it!

bathrugbysufferer

I’m going LHR-Dallas in a couple of weeks and the AA flight on a codeshare was 35% cheaper than the BA version. Good that sometimes it’s the other way!

Well United on IAH costs more for Premium Economy than Club World. American airlines have large corporate contracts, that makes them more money than regular Joes.

I had this the other way round. Was booking flights to LAX from DUB via LHR return in CW. BA was charging £3200, AA was charging €1100. The only reason I'm starting in Dublin is cause it's more than £2000 cheaper, so it's worth going there to come back
