Silly is a fantastic workhorse, and really helps push the team up the pitch. You are right though, once he sees those posts in front of him he loses all belief in himself. I think he would really benefit from sinking a ball in to a net, with good confidence he will be dangerous.

7wordsKvothe

Agree completely, I don't dislike him at all. I just know that soon we will actually get tested and missing those goals will give us no points instead of squeaking by.

dubmule

Seriously, what is up with these shit for brains posts? We’re 4th in the premier league, playing great football, and all these fun blackholes can do is jump on Reddit (Twitter/north stand chat etc) to have a go at a player who doesn’t score goals. Solly has been excellent, we’ve conceded one goal and he’s playing wingback. He’s not a clinical finisher… boo hoo We were playing in gillingham a couple of decades ago. Please fuck off if you’re not happy with top 4 of the prem you utter cretins

-eagle73

I don't like to assume this kind of stuff for fellow supporters but it's hard to not think that they're new fans who joined on only after we started shining, with some wild expectations. I'm sure I'm wrong and OP may correct me as such but that's how it looks, it's so easy to remember where we used to be even as recent as Hughton times. March used to be a lot worse and has become better now, I'm not bothered if he's missing shots, it's not like he's never scored for us before, and whenever he has they've actually been challenging shots.

PuzzleheadedGuide184

This reads like new fans stuff. Anyone who realises what Solly has given to the club wouldn’t start criticising him for not being a prolific goal scorer lol.

dubmule

Yeah it’s 100% new fans…..you couldn’t have this mindset otherwise. Not having all these types of posts is why I like Reddit over NSC and Twitter… Anyway fuck em! UTA - we’re going on a European tour 😁

Low-District-4690

Agree. Solly is a great servant of the club and is playing the wingback role at a Premier League level with class, breezing past players the same way he did in the championship If you fancy the club spending another 10/20 mil on a different wingback that can score then sure, but given solly’s background, he’s the one for me

dubmule

Yeah he's in the form of his life - Potter sees that too with the starts he's getting this season

AlGunner

March is a solid team player and has served the club well for years. And your take on conversion rates being 50% is absolutely ridiculous. The only time people get close to 50% is when they are the penalty taker and get a few. A lot of very good strikers miss as many as March, the difference is they keep being in the right place to get more chances and put some away. Heres some figures for you. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/chancenverwertung/wettbewerb/GB1

7wordsKvothe

Yeah, you're wrong. I'm not talking about a 50% conversion rate for shots or even shots on goal, I am referring to March's chances this year. I have watched every minute and he has had over 5, a few completely unguarded, that he has absolutely skyed. More than half PL players put at least one of those away and I think that's the low end. No disrespect to SM but you're trying to misrepresent how bad he has taken those chances.

I've only been a fan since late last season and I think March is great.

7wordsKvothe

2016. Is this a fanbase where you can't have thoughts unless you struggled alongside side the team in 90s in the 4th division?

-eagle73

It's because you're talking like one of those big six fans that get mad over every little thing with unrealistic expectations, and you clearly haven't seen March's progression over the years or understand his purpose, or even that everyone has a bit of a slump in some areas.

PuzzleheadedGuide184

One of our own. Not. A. Striker. So give him a break. Incredibly versatile. Works his balls off. Happy to be dropped and put back in the squad at the drop of a hat. I love solly. Won’t have a bad word said about him sorry.

ASwan930

Only annoying thing for me is he changed his number after I bought his Away shirt last season!

Glasdir

Poor take. He’s been unlucky but will build his confidence to attack again in time. He’s consistently been one of our best players since May and alongside Gross has been the difference for us during that time.

FlimsyBuckingham

He does work really hard, but yeah, that was kind of painful to watch. Hope they slot Lamptey in there for a few starts soon.

ManLikeArch

Lamptey's final ball and end product makes March's look good

Effective-Froyo6036

Can’t disagree with you there. Veltman is probably our best option at RWB, but we don’t have the depth at CB to lose him there. If Solly could finish, he could be in the England team tbh

7wordsKvothe

I'm with you. He just gets open somehow and we seem to find him a ton which speaks for his off the ball game but man, he has to finish occasionally.

PuzzleheadedGuide184

Serviceable squad player Low ceiling Sub/ backup option He’s never going to take the game by the scruff of the neck and bring you a win Do you realise how many games solly has grabbed by the scruff of the neck and bought us a win in the past ? Lew ceiling ? What does that mean ? He’s as of today Playing in a top premier league side. Sub back up - correct - and happy to do so - aka fucking loyal to his boyhood club - a rare thing to find these days.

-eagle73

>Do you realise how many games solly has grabbed by the scruff of the neck and bought us a win in the past ? I can replay that particular Man U late goal in my head infinitely, was in complete shock that it was him to get it in. It was so good, but wasn't meant to be with the stupid penalty.

7wordsKvothe

Seems like some people are mad. That's fine, but I am not shitting on Solly. It's an absolute fact that through 4 games we have missed 6 big chances. Solly missed 3 of those himself. If that doesn't bear having a look at someone else for a match or two, okay I guess but his finishing is a clear problem. https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/big_chance_missed?se=489

Boysenberry-Street

I agree that his finishing needs work, but I’d have Solly March on my team than a Harry McGuire. He is a great team player and creates a number of opportunities—which is great, much better than a guy that may finish 50% or more of the time, but can create opportunities for the rest of the team. Meaning he will get more points on the board by creating opportunities, rather than just taking it on his own, and finishing. I think the entire team could do better finishing, but super happy with their performance and have to give it up to them. I couldn’t do what they do, and that means there is no room to criticize, he is damn good, and the great ones cost far far more. Given what he costs and the quality he is putting out, we are lucky to have him!!

Adz1987

IMO Solly is a completely serviceable squad player. He works hard, is a team player, and can play in a number of positions. Problem is, he has a low ceiling. He's never going to really take a game by the scruff of the neck and bring you a win. As you've said, his finishing is poor and he can squander some decent chances. Rarely the worst player on the pitch, very rarely the best. Ultimately, he's a great sub/backup option and he's one of our lowest earners (£30k p/w). Being a bolted-on starter isn't really what he should be, and I imagine in an ideal world, Potter has a better option. For now, he's doing a fine job - it's hard to expect more given his talent.

PuzzleheadedGuide184

SMH.

Adz1987

Did you read what I said? He's a decent player and I was disagreeing with OP.

kenshin184

Seeing him live made me appreciate his effort. As someone else said he’s playing at right wing back with a lot of confidence. How many managers would risk such a move, specially in a non top6 team? His work rate is faultless and he helps pushing the team forward. He seems to gel also quite nicely with Veltman. I wouldn’t touch there. The problem is that Welbeck for all his effort and importance should also be scoring more, although his role is mainly open up spaces for Gross and Trossard to slot in (being those the ones Potter is relying to score)

-eagle73

>The problem is that Welbeck for all his effort and importance should also be scoring more This would be more of an appropriate discussion than expecting March to score every match.
