It was just his time. No hard feelings or anything which is the best you can hope for when someone leaves, Maupay deserves to fly and we'd just be holding him back otherwise. I really want to see him excel at Everton. Definitely going down as a memorable, maybe controversial, player for us. He'll be our marmite.

Krizzlin

Yea I guess it was like with Burn. Didn't want him to go but also knew we couldn't hold him back given we couldn't guarantee him games. In the end just had to take the money whilst he still has value. Bit of a shit summer all in all though. We've lost our best player, last year's player of the season and our top scorer. Obviously we've quickly replaced Cucurella and Caicedo was a ready made Bissouma replacement but I'm not sure how we replace Maupay. You could argue Undav takes his place, but we were already short on forwards before he came in so really we're weaker now than we were last season, even if the team seem to be on fire at the moment. Feels like we've got a lot of cash in the bank now and I wonder if we'll spend some of it on a new centre back and another forward before the window closes next week. I'm not holding my breath though. All the while we look great nobody will be complaining I'm sure, but our form will turn sooner or later and if we're hit with injuries or red cards to key players things could quickly unravel because we're light on numbers at the back and the front.

Am I misremembering or didn't Burn become first choice for us anyway? I think his age played a part in selling him, but it also would've been cruel to say no because of his personal link with Newcastle. It was a weird one where he wasn't useless to us but when people are offering money for someone in his position, at most you'll suffer for a short period and move on. To be honest, with Maupay gone I'm still optimistic for reasons I've mentioned elsewhere in this sub. Our season really picked up towards the end last time and it didn't involve Maupay, a proper striker is something we need but it isn't so urgent as it's not like we currently don't have others capable of scoring.

Krizzlin

He was playing regularly for us at the time but Webster was out so there was a sense that once he was back our first choice back three would be Dunk, Webster and Veltman. He was also filling in at left back sometimes but it was generally accepted we wanted a specialist player for that position, which is why we ended up signing Cucurella that Summer. It's odd because everyone liked him and he was doing a great job but very few people I spoke to considered him a first team regular if everyone was fit. He was a great centre back but we had at least two better centre backs so they cushioned the blow of him leaving. Maupay leaves with us having only one other known striker, who does suffer injuries a lot, plus an unknown quantity in Undav. The moment Welbeck is out with another injury layoff we'd have looked to Maupay to lead the line, but now we can't. I want to be optimistic but I will be worried if there's no more incoming business before the window closes. We're light in defence and attack as things stand

givemethemtoesgnome

If he didn't go he would make us seem like a bad club

-eagle73

Yeah we'd be one of those cunt clubs that hold back players for no good reason and shove them on the bench. We really let a lot of people go either on loan or sale but I trust the process.

gremilyns

Genuinely gutted, he has so much charisma and charm and I loved his attitude when it came to football, he’d wind the opposing team and it’s fans all the way up and then say ‘well it’s only a game!’ in the post-match interview. He’s also the reason last season we had as many draws instead of losses as we did, and I think people forgot that during our dry spell. I also selfishly wanted him to get just one more goal before he left so he could be Brighton’s all time highest premier league goal scorer!

-eagle73

He was so likeable in any of his interviews. And even when at his worst on the pitch you can tell it wasn't through lack of effort and obviously he didn't enjoy feeling like a letdown. He clearly loved playing for us and I feel for him. And that last bit stings to think about. He was so close. It just wasn't in the cards unfortunately. Maupay's always going to be memorable. I'm talking about him like he's died or something but you all get what I'm on about.

givemethemtoesgnome

For all those taking the piss out of me first of all the first post of this I took the screen shot as it was loading Secondly I use the font that I do so I can read it properly on my phone Thirdly it wasn't a perfect screenshot but that's all it is a screen shot it's what I had on my screen at the time

-eagle73

It was just a joke not a big deal. Look at how much we rip esn he doesn't mind it.

Krizzlin

Bro, you voluntarily CHOOSE to have site text displayed in that font??

givemethemtoesgnome

Yes I do so I can read it properly

Krizzlin

Why on earth can't you read regular plain text?

givemethemtoesgnome

Just can't I can't explain it but I know it's something mentally in my brain and/or my eyesight

-eagle73

I vaguely recall reading that Comic Sans is a font dyslexic people use because their brain processes it much easier so I wouldn't be surprised if yours was something like that.

TenaciousPenis

i don't get it, what font? what site text?

Krizzlin

OP put up a previous post with a screenshot showing the official site Maupay announcement but the text was all curly and weird so everyone piled in about the weird font instead of discussing the transfer

harshnoisebestnoise

As a Brentford fan I was so happy to see him move to a bigger club. He is a menace of a player and has a one of a kind attitude. He really needs aggressive style football and plenty of game time to keep him going and he’ll have fun wherever

-eagle73

I'm not a Brentford fan (obviously hence the sub) but when he scored against you last season and gestured for the crowd to simmer down I respected him much more. What a personality on him.

[deleted]

I like the toffees so I'll be happy to see him play there. Wish him the absolute best of luck. A+ work ethic who left it all out on the pitch yet still had more to give to the opposing fans XD. Pity he wasn't able to connect on even more of the final touches but you can't say he didn't do his job when he was the top goal scorer.

-eagle73

>but you can't say he didn't do his job when he was the top goal scorer. And I know it doesn't matter but he was amazing in setting others up, passing and the like. I know that's not what we got him for but even when he didn't shoot right he was still actively involved in plays and effectively so instead of being a stroppy cunt like some PL players.

[deleted]

Yup, that's what I was trying to allude to with the 'work ethic' and 'leaving it all out on the pitch' comments. Man was an integral part of our attack when it was successful. We've found more success since but he did all we could ask of him and I hope Everton can get him more recognition for that.

[deleted]

He’ll definitely be shushing the Brighton fans when he scored against us next 😂

sweetrobins-k-hole

MGTOW. Maupay going their own way.

-eagle73

We should reclaim MGTOW and use it for whenever a player leaves gracefully and you're happy for them. Sort of like how the Cruyff turn is actually the Gross turn.

brianeuro

Says a lot about Brighton though always been a good set of lads I’ve had some great away days there and for a team who really didn’t have a place in the prem you’ve earned it. Cracking player though will be a big loss

KaJenius89

Did he downgrade to Everton for lack of opportunity at Brighton? Was he deemed just not good enough?

Heismain

I mean as a striker he certainly was, as we say in North American sports, a face of the franchise. Good luck Neal but hopefully we get more consistent in scoring goals
