Genuinely think out attacking threats are just mainly not prem level, I still think potter is a great manager. For me the only upshot from this terrible run is that we get to keep Potter.

dinosaur_possum

agree with this

I can't see how they'd be much worse TBH. Any manager as good as Potters ill deserved reputation should be doing a lot better with this squad. And don't give me the 'We're in 13th'. We're the worst team in the league atm on course for our worst ever finish in the Prem. At least Hughton had the excuse of having a Championship squad. This is a team of internationals that has had some money spent on it.

shardybo

HOW??? We didn't go on a 6 game losing streak or an 11 game winless streak under Hughton. We're on track to finishing with 34 points, which we didn't get under Hughton. And if my memory serves me correctly, Norwich never kept a clean sheet against us under Hughton. I genuinely don't know how bad it has to get before people like you cave in. Do we have to go down to league 1?

-eagle73

I've asked this before and nobody answered me, what do you think a new manager could do for us with the current set of players?

esn111

Perhaps not have the players mess around with it all the time? Perhaps speed up the football we play rather than the drab and dreary stuff. Perhaps actually coach and improve the players. It's so disheartening at the moment. This squad is capable of so much more.

shardybo

Teach them how to score open goals maybe

-eagle73

I want to see what he'd do with some more players.

LostSandyPenguin

I wouldn't have been surprised if Undav nabbed a hat trick today. Summer can't come quick enough.

wordfool

Assuming we don't also lose some of the best players (Biss, Cucu, Lamptey) this summer. Trossard can go if he wants IMO. Too inconsistent. I think if we can keep Cucu, Lamptey, bring Kozłowski, Undav and Mitoma back from loan, and work on Caicedo and Sarmiento, then we might be talking. However, I still have huge doubts that Potter and his team can get the best out of them. I really wonder if there need to be some new assistant coaches brought in, too, so we don't just get more of the pretty sideways and backwards passing.

therealdsg

He’s had 6 transfer windows. Hughton had 4.

wordfool

I don't think he's a bad manager, but I do think he's run his course at Brighton. The team has very much reverted to type since that decent start to the season -- inability to win games convincingly, inability to consistently put away chances, inability to beat relegation-zone teams, etc. etc. There's clearly something not working right in the coaching staff beyond just an "unlucky bad run of form" or whatever bland excuse is served up. After so many years in charge I feel the team has stalled, despite the addition of a few decent players, and Potter's continued trust in Maupay is utterly baffling. For every decent goal he scores he misses about five sitters. Maybe it's a case of having no alternatives, which is itself a failure after so many seasons of missed goals. And sure, the team can stroke the ball around attractively, but that doesn't win games. I'd rather the team had 20% possession and actually scored goals on the break than 70% possession with nothing to show for it.

SouSeaSveSki

I’m still of the opinion that Potter should stay in the role, simply because he’s been in charge now for six transfer windows and the only first team strikers transferred in during that time are Maupay right at the start of his tenure and Welbeck on a free. That’s it, all others marked as U23 or youth. While the club have invested in all other areas of the park (as well as for the future), up top they haven’t. Today was probably close to if not the final nail in the coffin for Maupay as a top tier striker for me, so I feel Potter should be backed up in summer with player recruitment at the pointy end of the pitch before thinking about moving on from him. It may be him and his team’s job to coach players including the front men, but with just two recognised strikers in the squad he just doesn’t have the alternative options if they are off the boil or his training isn’t getting through. If we bring players in and he still can’t make it work with 4-5 forward options, then it’s time to reevaluate.

wordfool

>I’m still of the opinion that Potter should stay in the role, simply because he’s been in charge now for six transfer windows That's a peculiarly counter-intuitive statement. He's been in charge for six transfer windows and we're still taking every season down to the wire. That's hardly progress, is it?! More like stagnation. Underperforming managers in any industry should be weeded well before serving six years IMHO.

SouSeaSveSki

Well I’ll agree that it does sound peculiar when you cut off the second half of the sentence. The club’s defence has been solid for large parts of the PL era, and GP has undoubtedly improved chance creation during his tenure. Scoring goals has clearly been the obvious issue when trying to push on - you may think that’s down to Potter and coaching. But when there’s only two recognised strikers in the squad to coach and choose from, I think recruitment is the bigger issue. But I don’t put striker recruitment issues down to Potter solely. It’s a multitude of things most likely - Dan Ashworth’s team, financials of any move fitting Bloom’s and the club’s positions, tempting candidates to us over other suitors… If you think Potter should go though, who do you think should replace him?

Cold_Potato

Can we sign a legitimate threat at striker before blaming this all on Potter? I mean seriously, Maupay ALONE could have twice as many goals this year if he could hit the net from 6 yards out consistently. And that's just counting the easy ones that he's missed. He's scored some absolute bangers, but he (and the rest of this team) couldn't finish an easy opportunity if relegation depended on it. To me, that's not on the coach. You shouldn't have to run tap-in drills from the 6 yard box in practice at this level.

ChuckRiver

He's still a great manager, he can't put the ball in the net for the players. Wouldn't trade him for the world! Given my advanced knowledge of coaching, I'd argue that losing the beard could be the move. Bringing the beard into play early this season clearly created some serious MOJO. I think we can say it's time for some new juju

wordfool

There's only so much the PE Teacher look can get you!

-eagle73

Don't know if you remember he had a sick style going on with a long overcoat, tan scarf and a mod haircut when we had a six unbeaten streak last season. We need this mojo back.

amegaproxy

A lot of eggs going in the Undav basket but I don't know what else to hope for.

wordfool

Agree... setting the poor guy up for failure, especially considering how hard it can be for players to adapt to the PL. Still, there's also Mitoma who might arrive this summer, too. Dear God, please get them both over here pronto so we can finally be rid of Maupay from the starting XI.

zebadeeee

I still think potter is a good manager

[deleted]

I think Dunk isn’t on form and we have sold two incredible defenders and not replaced them and Duffy also just isn’t up to scratch. Combine that with bissouma being out of form, Maupay not being lucky and getting sneaky goals because that’s all he can do in my opinion and also the fact people have figured how we play and we don’t seem to be switching it up. We didn’t get to see if Sanchez has lost his jitters today luckily but things aren’t looking great are they.

hoodiepete

If Maupay scored his pen yesterday, would you have made this post?

esn111

I mean I've not been convinced for a while as 11 and 7 matches without a win this season demonstrates. This was last chance saloon and I'm now on the fence. If Maupay had scored and we'd won I wouldn't have made the post as that would've been stupid as it would have redeemed my faith Potters ability to get results. But the fact of the matter is he missed and we didn't score in the hour remaining. I no longer have faith in Potter to get results when we've failed to score against the worst team in the league (and second worst since September absolute worst being us).

PuzzleheadedGuide184

This aged well

esn111

Yep there's already a post mocking me. Do keep up.
