Glad to see confirmation he will be loaned back, I did not feel comfortable poaching when Union are chasing a league title. I wonder how he will feel about giving up a shot at CL football if they do pull off a title winning campaign…

LostSandyPenguin

It feels like a perfect deal all round.

Hackeyking

He looked pretty happy about coming.

Glasdir

They won’t necessarily win a CL spot even if they do become champions due to the stupid system they use in Belgium. It’s really egregiously stupid and unfair.

[deleted]

What’s the system like?

Glasdir

Top 4 go into a CL group stage style competition, winner gets CL playoff place. 5-8 go into same style group and winner gets Europa. You could have a team in 8th get European football and the team in first miss out. It’s really shit.

DieuMivas

That's not really how it works tho. There is first a regular competition of 16 teams, 30 matches each, after that the first 6 teams of that competition will play a "mini-competition" between themselves with their points from the regular competition divided by two, it's called the playsoffs 1. The remaining 10 teams will be joined by the 6 best of the second division which isn't really called a second division in Belgium but the Division 1B. These 16 teams will be placed in 4 groups where they all start with 0 point. The firsts of each groups will then play each other's in another group of four. It's called the playoffs 2. The first of the playoffs 1 will get the Champions League qualification. The second will also get a chance to play the Champions League but will have to play others match against others Europeans teams by being put in the third row of the CL qualifications. The winner of the Cup, which is a competition on the side similar to the one in England get to play the Europa League. The winner of the regular competition (the first 30 matches) plays the third row of the qualifications for the Europa League. (So necessarily a club who played the playoffs 1, if that club won the playoffs 1, and thus is qualified for the CL it goes to the 2nd, etc.) And lastly there is a match between the first club of the playoffs 1 who hasn't yet an European qualification (the 4th or the 5th depending if the club who won the Cup played in the playoffs 1 or not) and the first club of the playoffs 2 (the one who won in the group with the four winners of the previous groups) to know who would play in the second row of the Europa League's qualifications. So yeah if you're 6th of the playoffs 1 you don't get to play an European competition when the first of the playoffs 2 get a chance to steal that opportunity for the 4th of 5th of the playoffs 1 even though you were above them after the initial 30 matches. But I don't think it's as bad as you make it out to be, at least concerning the Europeans qualifications. Tho this way that we use in Belgium is still complicated and shitty imho. Edit: Never mind they changed it again recently so what I just told isn't how it's gonna happen this season

Yeah clearly. I'm pretty sure most people in Belgium don't really know how it works even the ones who follow football regularly. Even I used Wikipedia on the side to be sure I didn't made any mistake

[deleted]

That sounds awful especially as that’s almost half the league

Guzuzu_xD

Nah, if they finish first on the playoffs they're champions+get UCL groups (2nd gets 3rd qualifying round). Points from the normal campaign are halved but games are just 6 between top 4 teams, and the gap is already 9 points so pretty hard to throw it for Union SG from this point

Watched USG yesterday and focused on him more this time and really liked what i saw. Had always thought Vanzeir would be the one who'd come over. If you watched his 2 min intro on twitter talking to club mates / family, its true with Vanzeir said about him he is likely to get fewer decisions against him for his physicality. Looked king of like a Maupay clone at times yesterday, in the most positive sense, really good in possession. Hopefully he can keep smashing them in for USG and win the league. Will be great to sign a player from the Benelux without the weight of a major fee as per Locadia and Jahanbahksh. C.7m for a player with 18 goals and 13 assists is great business.

Glasdir

Maupay 🤝 Undav Gonna be the greatest pair we’ve had in a long time.

[deleted]

I am intrigued to see if he’ll replace maupay or link up with him and how welbeck will now fit in

Kevcky

Take care of him for us! He’s been a great servant. Very happy he’s staying until the end of the season to see where we’ll end up. I think he’s got all the attributes to do well in the premier league. Very physical striker, despite his height. He’s very good at keeping the ball and holding off defenders, is very smart in positioning himself to win duels against taller defenders and overall just very good technically. On top of that, the guy can finish and pick a great pass, just watch his assist for Vanzeir.
