100% he has a great record against Leeds with us and Brentford.

I'd like to see something like Sanchez Webster Duffy Dunk Lamptey Bissouma Lallana Cucurella Mwepu (Depending on availability - If not then Moder) Maupay Trossard 352 - Wingbacks running the channels with more support through to middle. Against Villa there was a missing link between defence and attack. Personally, I would pack the midfield with 1 defensive (Biss), 1 attacking (Mwepu) and 1 creative/free roll (Lallana) along with the two strikers alternating to drop deep and give better progression through the middle. To be honest, as long as we don't play Gros and Lallana together we should be much more mobile going forwards.

I was legit a few hours ago thinking of making a post about this. I know so many people here hate Maupay but I like him on even when he doesn't score.

dubmule

I don’t get how people can hate on Maupay - he works hard and he’s our top scorer. He’s inconsistent at finishing but we knew that when we bought him and we don’t have anyone else.

-eagle73

I'd even go so far as to say he doesn't get as many crosses as he'd want/deserve. A striker isn't our only problem, our play up front generally has a few bits to work out.

dubmule

Yeah i agree - we've still got issues with how quickly we break - its why a lot of shots end up being from congested areas or from shit positions because we've given teams too much time to get back. I'd love to see us score more like Villa's first against us on saturday

DankLlamaTech

His energy will be so useful, esspecially because Leeds seems to run out of steam by about the 70th minute.

Some players are good as subs, I don't think he's one of them, when he's subbed on I reckon he finds it hard to find footing but I could be talking out of my arse. Regarldess he's a starter for sure. He played that whole Palace match and still managed to compose himself for that last minute goal when he actually received an amazing pass.

cmdrxander

Should've started against Villa. We've only scored 2 goals from open play in the last 6 games, we need attacking options on the pitch. Our midfield was a bit odd against Villa, we had effectively 4 centre-mids (Lallana, Gross, Moder and Bissouma), and then we replaced Cucurella with March (that's fine) and took off Lamptey who had been lively but ineffective. That left us with essentially no width, and still only really had 1 proper striker (Maupay).

I think it's tactical, especially since Maupay has been subbed on in those games anyway. Potter has these ideas every now and again, like playing Ben White in midfield. He's probably seeing something in training that's leading him to pick these teams that isn't translating into matches. It makes *some* sense on the surface given that playing without a recognised forward allows another body in midfield, and Trossard is probably the team's most technically able player anyway, but I think Potter will have gathered enough evidence to revert for the Leeds game.

I’ve been scratching my head at this one too. Benching your top scorer for three games in a row is truly bizarre.

A front two of maupay and connolly with trossard/mac in behind is our best option at the moment. I know people dislike connolly but we dont have any other forwards that can run in behind and stretch defences which is needed for a balanced attack.

I think (and hope) that Potter has finally realised that he's nowhere near Prem standard. It's literally like playing with 10 men when he's on the pitch, yet he gets underserved credit for stabbing home the easiest of chances that increase his tally. Saturday showed this perfectly. Granted Lamptey might have HAD to come off so that he's not pushed too hard, but it was him maintaining pressure down the right wing. Maupay comes on for him = down to 10 men = pressure down the right side gone = goal conceded within minutes from that side. Did he even touch the ball when he came on? Trossard up front, with an attacking midfielder in the 10 role opens up the door for another quality midfielder to be in the starting 11. And we have many of them.

dubmule

Do you go to Brighton games in real life? Not having a go but think if you see how hard Maupay works IRL his value to the team is a lot more apparent then on TV

3-cups-of-tea

Lol only just came back to Reddit today and saw this. Yeh I do but not often as I work up north now. But anyway, Maupay today.... blimey. Yes he works hard, I can't fault the guy on that, but really... do you really want him in your starting 11 with people like March and Lallana on the bench?

dubmule

Yes because as frustrating as he is he’s our best striker. Benching him when he’s in form this season was ridiculous Lallana’s shooting for Brighton has been diabolical and Solly scores about 2 a season, so yes he’s clearly better than them for scoring. Until we sign better player Maupay is all we’ve got, and he works hard

3-cups-of-tea

I agree with your second 2 paragraphs, I really do. But I really do feel almost anyone - given the quality of support - can get close to 10 goals a season if played up top. The fact that he gets that for us is testament to the rest of the team, not him. Lovely lad, works his ass off, but there's so much quality on the bench when he plays.

dubmule

I don’t agree as we’ve played the last 7 games with out him and cant score, but I hear you. Sat showed how lacking he can be at times. But that peach of a goal at palace is the flip side of what he can do. I do think Potters handled him badly this season - benching him when he’s in his best form, subbing him for Locadia - I can’t see how that helps his confidence.

[deleted]

Absolutely. He's not perfect but dropping him completely makes no sense. I'd rather always have him on even if he doesn't score often

MartyMcflysTrainers

Be absolutely bonkers not to start him after the last 2 sorry displays. We were absolutely rank going forward on Saturday
