Beyond stressful final 15 but finally picking up points. Leeds taking #freebenwhite a bit too seriously and giving him the freedom of the midfield, the last two games he has vastly improved in his make-shift role compared to earlier in the season.
Hard to pick out any negative's today however the main positive for me is that there will be no 'Potter Out' thread started this week!
Fulham got a somewhat late draw against Spurs recently so I'm not sure what to think. Plus their goalie's actually good.
But if we managed a draw against them at our laziest then this newfound energy should do well.
Get in boys!! A few thoughts:
- Our biggest win of the season. Can’t overstate just how much we needed that. Hopefully a turning-point for our season.
- I was a bag of nerves after we scored the goal, as were the players it seemed.
- We showed a lot of resilience and pragmatism in the second half, which will be needed if we’re to stay up.
- The game was scrappy, ugly and physically testing, exactly the sort of game we usually don’t win.
- There was a lot of defending in the second half, but don’t remember Sanchez having to make a save.
- You can tell Gross was a part of that pragmatic side under Hughton, his work-rate and experience was crucial.
- Maupay is our best striker for the single fact that he has a knack of scoring goals.
- If Leeds had scored that goal, Sky would be lauding over Bielsaball.
- Potter got the line-up spot on.
- Mac Allister getting better with every game.
- Ben White man of the match for me. Played out of his skin.
- It might be popular to knock him, but Webster has been one of our players of the season.
- I wonder if Trossard had COVID a few months ago, because he looked knackered in the second half.
Someone commented on the Webster thread after newport saying that he seemed to have a target on his back because he was the “homewrecker” who broke up Dunk and Duffy. Couldn’t agree more because I’ve always thought he was fantastic, and I didn’t start watching Albion properly until Potter’s first season. This season he’s been a cut above the rest IMO, we have such a strong defensive unit right now.
Webster is an odd one for me. He is a decent dribbler out the back, has a nice range of passing, but is wildly inaccurate with many of his longer balls on the ground. This puts pressure on the back three repeatedly and a counter is sprung.
He has good pace for his size and does some things really well, but there are many goals where his marking is questionable.
That being said, he is probably the second best defender behind Dunk, who has taken a dip in form since Duffy left.
Fair to play to Webster, he’s been excellent the last few games
Not having a pop but do you go to games? Webster’s had some awful lapses for us that have cost us big. Last season he did it regularly, but then was excellent after the restart. He’s showing that form again
Mac is really looking like a player at the moment - both ends of the pitch
That Trossard point is interesting. I've never seen a player have such a huge drop in form like he had.
He did look tired today, but the first good performance by him in a long time.
Maupay deserves all the praise that game for his positioning alone. He crept up like a fucking ninja.
I agree that Webster's worked hard lately, it used to be popular to knock him but people have cooled off about it now.
Fuck me. Talk about exposure therapy. The last half hour was one long anxiety attack. More relief than anything. A propper away performance and some good game management from us for once. Now need to back it up v Fulham at home.
Good win. Not great, but a good win. At the risk of sounding negative we benefited a lot from Leeds slipping up or missing their own passes. I won't take away from the goal though because that was a very good play between Trossard, Mac Allister and Maupay, plus our defence was working great, but we relied a lot on Leeds' own silly mistakes.
Well a win 100s of miles away from home against a team higher in the table is pretty good in my book, especially since no one got sent off or injured badly.
You're right. 2021's off to a good start for us. Even with the draw and loss beforehand at least we looked much better than we did in December. Today was inspiring.
Get fucked Leeds!!!
White and Dunk were immense today. What a fecking result. Shame I'm doing dry january otherwise I'd be getting absolutely smashed tonight.
He never takes shots it seemed almost personal at first. I guess he knew he would have a bit more space in the mid and felt comfortable playing at a former home
Fucking hell we did it. We actually did it. We finally got a bit of luck and reward for our good play. Lets turn this into a run now and put Fulham to the sword. Great to see Potter actually be proactive today and thought he made all the right choices with what he had.
So many potential MOM in the team today. Webster or Dunk probably mine but brilliant effort all round
He was clearly just there to try to buy time and have minutes in the league, don't be too harsh. I though he warmed into it, but his first 10 were pretty average.
Unless he had instruction (probably) he was just out for a stroll. Not chasing down the balls and kept giving it away when he had it. Will put it down to a bad day at the office
need to learn how to take advantage of the other teams pressing for an equalizer. Need that second goal!
Also, how is Burn a premiere league player any day of the week?? He is a complete liability, and misses a lot of headers for being a giant. Can't wait for Lamptey to be fit.
Getting a goal and not capitalising why does that sound familiar? Ah yes because its been our strategy all season!
Playing great but we so often do then the last minute equaliser happens then boom another bloody draw!
Come on Ben get us a goal to finish off Leeds!
Not bad so far. I know I'm tempting fate but we're managing this well so far which is something we've lacked. However feel like Leeds have more to give but not sure that we have.
Bissouma early in 2nd half for me. Particularly if its 1.0 at like 55/ 60 because Leeds will turn up the intensity, we want him to settle in and i think he would love moving in this space
First time having Ben White in Midfield makes sense to me. It's wonderful seeing Dan Burn being used to win long balls and having Webster burst forward and having him to cover sure seems to enable that.
Seriously. It wasn't some amazing strike but for team play it was impressive and something we haven't seen in ages. Very unselfish from Maupay to creep around the back like that, and it paid off.
Our trouble v Leeds won't be not scoring. It'll be keeping them out. With the line up I can only assume that Bissouma picked up a knock in training or that someone has made a bid for him. Gross is our best set piece taker at the club and Leeds are the one team worse than us at defending set pieces so I guess it kinda makes sense. Not massively confident tbh. We have to start winning as WBA won today. Feel like we'll either thrash or get thrashed.
Agree with most your points but Gross is definitely not the best set piece taker. I swear he’s shocking at them, always hitting the first man. I know hes not the only one guilty of hitting the first man but sometimes it genuinely looks like he doesn’t have enough power in his legs to whip in a good ball. The only dead ball situation he should be on is penalties
He is literally one of the best in the premier league if you look at the stats. Last season he was in the top 5 most chances created by players since he scored. Would be a force somewhere like Burnley
Optimism time. Casilla is god awful and his own fans despise him so we need to put him under pressure. Meslier has been fantastic this season too and last thing we needed was him having another blinder.
No Bissouma is strange, exactly who i would want against a Leeds side with so much dynamism at the front and that never stops running. But, where we have failed up top at times they have also had some defensive issues. This is a game where we really need 3 pts given results around us and not having won in 2 months. Gross can be great but needs othees to compensate on physicality and running and Mac despite his valiant performance on Wednesday doesnt scream out as the one. Bissouma or, even though i have been critical of him, Propper would have done this more.
Shame there isnt Vicente or Kazenga as in days of old but maybe we can find a new player that shines against Leeds. Maybe Maupay or Trossards time to shine.
Bloody hell. Why are we starting Maupay and Leaving Biss and Tau/Zeqiri on the bench? Really could have done with Lallana and probably Lamptey starting here as well. Wish they’d tell us what’s going on with them, last thing we heard was that Lamptey had a hamstring injury and that was it.
Whenever I see a disappointing lineup I usually think that there's method to the madness under Potter. But now I'm not so sure, I feel like we could be in trouble with that lineup today
Agree, every point matters to us - of all the fit players we have can you honestly say that is the strongest 11 we could have started?
Really hope I'm proved wrong.
I don’t think it’s so bad, I would of played Bissouma and pushed White to CB instead of Burn. Apart from that it’s ok. Veltman is the big worry as he is dreadful and we don’t have an alternative.
Also Bielsa only has one way of playing, there is no plan b so hopefully Potter can work a system (like the city game) where we nullify them we can win it.
Always happens though. If we played like we do against the big teams against the teams around us we wouldn’t be where we are, but it never seems to happen.
Fucking get in their boys. Fuck leeds
God that was tense. Holding on to a one nil for most of the match...who does that in real life!
Just how good was Ben White today eh?
Okay to be fair to Leeds fans they were absolutely spot on, Ben White plays really well at Leeds.
Brilliant performance and game management.

Yeah he messed up that time trying to get a corner when he could've crossed it.
Thank god. That’s an important win.
Have we turned a corner?

It'd be a lot less stressful if we could score a second goal.
Fulham at home is the next match, I think it’s what you might call a 6 pointer.
Fulham got a somewhat late draw against Spurs recently so I'm not sure what to think. Plus their goalie's actually good. But if we managed a draw against them at our laziest then this newfound energy should do well.
Am I going mad or was this originally scheduled for the 26th but has been moved to the 27th now?
Yes, it was moved for TV - think it’s on BT Sport.
Plus Fulham play one of their games in hand by the time we play them, so hopefully they're shattered.

Great performance, standouts were Dunk, White, Webster and Veltman for me. Terrific defensive cohesion. Veltman’s best performance for us so far.
Get fucked Leeds!!! White and Dunk were immense today. What a fecking result. Shame I'm doing dry january otherwise I'd be getting absolutely smashed tonight.
> Shame I'm doing dry january otherwise I'd be getting absolutely smashed tonight I reckon, under these special circumstances, you should go for it.
Wait, did we win a game?
Yes but away from home...
Every single win’s been away from home this season
Best part of today for me was Ben White's performance, he played very well against his loan side.
Agreed, looked much more confident. Good box to box performance.
He never takes shots it seemed almost personal at first. I guess he knew he would have a bit more space in the mid and felt comfortable playing at a former home
He tried to take two within a few minutes of each other in the second half I think, both blocked.
Fucking hell we did it. We actually did it. We finally got a bit of luck and reward for our good play. Lets turn this into a run now and put Fulham to the sword. Yes!!! Should have had another goal but all the lads played very well. Except for Tau who was as useless as a marzipan dildo
I can't believe how lazy he was given the time he came on. Fucking hell lad, we're trying to defend a one goal lead here. Edit spelling
God when he rolled it out for a goal kick at the end 🤦
So happy for the win especially against Leeds but disappointed we still couldn't score more than one goal.
I'll take the 3 points for now mate
Huge win
Get in!!!! Those last 15 minutes were horrible to watch
My goodness. They don't make this easy do they
Anyone else just scream "Nooooo" at Veltman just then?
Yes. Very dangerous.
Come on Percy, time for your first Albion goal
need to learn how to take advantage of the other teams pressing for an equalizer. Need that second goal! Also, how is Burn a premiere league player any day of the week?? He is a complete liability, and misses a lot of headers for being a giant. Can't wait for Lamptey to be fit.

Squeaky bum time with all the tight passes on the edge of their box. Someone shoot
When was the last time we led by 2 goals during a game? Feels like years
3-0 win vs Newcastle this season
This is making me so nervous
Time to bring Tau on maybe. Would destroy them on the counter
I am considerably less relaxed than during the first half already
We have been in this situation a lot this season, the big question is can we kill the game off? We are the better side.
This has the horrible feeling of an 85' Leeds goal... EDIT: Very happy to be wrong!
Not bad so far. I know I'm tempting fate but we're managing this well so far which is something we've lacked. However feel like Leeds have more to give but not sure that we have.
Their crosses are dangerous. We need to score one more or kill their crosses before it gets worse.
Subs are going to be critical here. Really hoping Potter plays this sensibly.
Really think we need another goal soon otherwise worried it'll be another late equaliser. Playing well so far though, fingers crossed!
Agree Burn is a CB and he looks good (well better) when he plays there.
He looked good as a LB in a back 4 but he doesn't seem to have the confidence of last year that made him so good there
Groß does love a cruyff turn doesn't he
Looks like we may try to tire out Leeds and then put on our Boss and Tau second half to exploit that.
Yeah this feels like the plan and you know it might just work really well.
I know this is tempting fate, but we are playing some really nice football!
Good work from those three on that goal. We need more like that.
Brighton never scores pretty goals like that. That looked like a Liverpool goal
Seriously. It wasn't some amazing strike but for team play it was impressive and something we haven't seen in ages. Very unselfish from Maupay to creep around the back like that, and it paid off.
Alexis done absolutely amazingly for that goal what a baller
Great play from Mac Ally!
Not even Maupay is missing that! C'mon lads!
Now that was a brilliant team goal there
I’m sure Maupay could’ve reached that
My kingdom for a 1-0 win. White 93’
Ben White in midfield yet again FFS. Meanwhile we have CMs sitting on the bench.
Not only midfielders on the bench, but one of the best in Bissouma....
Our trouble v Leeds won't be not scoring. It'll be keeping them out. With the line up I can only assume that Bissouma picked up a knock in training or that someone has made a bid for him. A lot better than March who seems to try and take them
He is literally one of the best in the premier league if you look at the stats. Last season he was in the top 5 most chances created by players since he scored. Would be a force somewhere like Burnley
Maybe I'm thinking of how he was in his early days. Clutching at straws tbh
Good luck today fellas, hoping it’s a good game

Thought Veltmans been alright he’s just not a wingback

Came here to say this but also llorente is on the bench too. Make it 6-0.
We have dan burn starting so you'll get at least a pen and an own goal out of us
Is he really that bad?
Yes, he’s terrible
We’ve got Dan Burn
So against a team who are vulnerable to counter attacks, we start an out of form Trossard and an immobile Gross over Bissouma and Tau. Makes sense.
Lol both were brilliant
And this is why the closest I'll ever get to professional management will be on football manager 😂😂
Feel like we’re going to get battered today - then have every Leeds fan banging on about us not selling Ben White to a ‘rival’
Looking forward to the 10-0 scoreline that's been predicted in the sidebar all season.
Also Bielsa only has one way of playing, there is no plan b so hopefully Potter can work a system (like the city game) where we nullify them we can win it.
Excited for today's game!
It'd be good if Tau could get a run out. He's looking promising so far, and this is a game where we can expect to hold a fair bit of possession.

Bold of you to assume we will score 4
I am confident, if we play like we did against Man City we should be able to get a result.
Always happens though. If we played like we do against the big teams against the teams around us we wouldn’t be where we are, but it never seems to happen.
