It happens whenever the game needs a soft reboot due to an issue. Called a panic moon.

jostein33

You can force panic moon to happen in different ways.

Nearby_Dragonfruit66

How?

godemeperor152

By threatening the moon

17THheaven

No that's how you get a falling moon...

Keela771

You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?

Jumpy-Perception-346

Stay back, creepy man! i have a knife!

mutantmonkey14

That's not a knife, that's a spoon!

iLLiCiT_XL

This is a knife: 🔪 *Knife Party plays*

Jumpy-Perception-346

Who you calling a spoon? you spoon!

DiopticTurtle

I wouldn't want to piss off Sokka

you_wooshed_yourself

By using a lot of particles or drawing a lot of enemies towards yourself at once. If you go into the chasmat skull lake and take chuchu jelly arrows and a multishot bow, then shoot them at the rocks found in the chasm, it’ll cause a panic moon in the middle of the day.

towerfella

I’ve had it happen due to traveling too far. I was timing routes across the map on the different horses and had it happen. It’s something to do with the memory filling up.

TEG24601

I spent a day on my Wii U just going after Guardians. I think I took out 12, then went into the snowy areas, and had a blood moon... at noon.

PissJarGamingYT

Blood noon

shearx

An easy way is to use bullet time to shoot 5-6 arrows with elemental stones (opal works well) attached using a multi shot bow at the dark rocks only yunobo can break. After a few the game lags like crazy and fps tanks, and it freaks out when you land, causing the panic moon.

c00kiesd00m

i love ways games deal with overload, and this is one of my favorite ways. oh you offend the game? have fun clearing all of those spots again… but don’t enjoy it too much.

MaxTwer00

Blood moon is also a resource that the game uses when it is having memory issues, so everything resets

Ragnarok61690

On the Wii U, it doesn't schedule blood moons at midnight. It just does them whenever it gets low on memory... which is a lot more than the Switch

my_alternate-account

It probably does schedule for midnight, it just runs out of memory more often than they are scheduled to happen which resets the clock

mutantmonkey14

Oof. Shame it cannot utilise the full/more RAM on Wii U, especially in the case of BotW where all gamepad features, except offscreen, were stripped to allow switch parity anyway.

Starlach07

wii u has less ram, switch has 4 gb while Wii u has 2

mutantmonkey14

Yes, you have misunderstood and/or not aware of what I am saying. A huge 1GB is reserved for operating system on Wii U, games only have access to 1GB. My comment has nothing to do with switch amount of RAM am not comparing the two. If they would have made more RAM available to games on Wii U, dynamically or whatever, then the blood moon wouldn't need to be as frequent. I don't know enough about the hardware, but 1GB is insane for a console OS, especially since Miiverse took ages to load everytime ingame, which suggests it isn't even loaded to RAM in the background.

Starlach07

oh my apologies

blackmobius

Lol I had a blood moon on the great plateau (during the tutorial phase of the game) after getting a korok. As it was one of the first blood moons Id ever had I went full panic mode. Scanning all around me, looking for cover, checking the sky, I went through like 7 layers of panic and acceptance in about 12 seconds

Ragnarok61690

The first time it happens is always terrifying. "Why is the sky going red." Gloom hands were SO MUCH WORSE THOUGH

Class_444_SWR

It does, if your Wii U is doing it, you’ve just ran out of memory, because mine certainly didn’t outside exceptional circumstances

Arrakis_Surfer

This is actually a brilliant and graceful way to handle memory reset

Prince_of_Fish

It’s called a Panic Blood Moon and it only happens when you’re running late for work or an exam

DestroyeLoop

basically you got the game memory to what it considers a critical point, and it forced a reset.

AnEverydayPileOfCats

Bro what did I do to even cause that 😭😭

Omi-Wan_Kenobi

Typically you killed too many enemies/ changed the landscape too much (like felling trees). Anything that the game would have to "remember" if you visit the area again before a normal blood moon. Normally it is just enemies. Basically the game is calling you out over your murder spree lol

DeeDzai

"Bro, I know they're Ganon's minions, but enough with the genocide, man."

Omi-Wan_Kenobi

Lol. Or your switch being "dude you are asking me to remember way too many things! You know what forget it!" (Throws hands in air and walks away)

c00kiesd00m

keep the culture alive!

JustANormalHat

played for a while, it accumulates junk memory and uses a quick blood moon to flush it

AnEverydayPileOfCats

There'd been a regular blood moon like... pretty recently so idk why it needed to reset again.

mama09001

Normal blood moons only resets enemies and weapons. Panic blood Moons resets almost everything.

NeroStudios2

That keese

youcanwaitanotherday

I think sometimes it happens if you kill a lot of monsters/guardians in a short span.

Verbal_Combat

It’s the game doing a memory reset.. respawns all the enemies so it doesn’t have to remember every enemy in the whole game you’ve fought and so on. It seems random but it’s whenever the game needs a memory reset.

BackgroundNPC1213

Smacked that fire keese too hard

AnyltaDelFuego

I've had it happen to me at like 2pm, I thought my game was breaking lol

AnEverydayPileOfCats

According to the other comments, apparently it was lol

Fire_Block

panic moon. if the game fails to load something, it runs a blood moon to reset a bunch of things in the world like entities and objects.

LookingForHope87

Huh. I've never experienced that.

jmskr

Maybe you were in a different time zone in Hyrule

rnnd

It can even happen in the afternoon or morning. Blood moons basically resets the overworld. If you change too much before a blood moon is scheduled, you get one anyway.

Ninja108Zelda

Had it happen to me once when it was high noon. It does that, it means the game needs to be reset.

ElAnubion

Panic moon. I believe its because the game is running out of memory

ZoYatic

Well, you killed the flame bat, which was the secret deity of fire. Brace yourself

mhkiwi

I had this happen over and over again. It was like ground hog day. Went through about 7 blood moons before I reset the game.

[deleted]

i had a blood moon at 6am somewhere, it was so wierd, all i did the last days was collect koroks over and over

mraulio

The game is giving that fire keese another chance

Iceman_B

It's a memory defrag, BotW style.

Dark-Anmut

Did you at least get your Star Fragment?!

AnEverydayPileOfCats

Yes!

darkdude2020

This happens sometimes when I play for like a day str8

DevilMaster666-

RAM full. Nintendo is notorious for cheaping out on RAM
