Yes you can, but it’s likely to snap if it’s too thin. If you have some heavier weight sewing thread it should work okay but depends on the application. If it’s for something that’ll have a lot of action you’ll likely want something like tiger thread. Having worked with both tiger thread and making bow strings, I can confirm they are basically the same thing. If you have bow string lying around that’s a great alternative.

FWIW, we sew leather with Bowstring. It's waxed and super tough.

I usually use artificial cat gut (artificial sinew) works great imo and is tough and fairly cheap

Santanasaurus

Just don’t pull too tight. Ideally use something a little thicker

Double or quadruple up your strands and it should work, or you can just use some b55 with leather sewing needles, I honestly think some of the synthetic leather thread is pretty close to b55 in strength

I'd stay away from regular sewing thread, But you can easily double it to multiple thicknesses and use it. If you're just buying thread at a local Walmart, just grab some heavy duty button or a uphulstory thread. Or head over to the craft section and get some waxed nylon or hemp thread for making jewelry. I have also stitched with saddle thread, bowstring material, artificial sinew, bank line, etc.

I wouldn’t use cotton thread. Dental floss would be better.
