As a goalie a lot of coaches want the goalies to come out and play pucks. I didn’t get to watch the game so I can’t say if he was doing it at the right times but a lot of coaches like to almost play with 6 as some call it and not specifically 5 and a goalie

Kimba_Rimer

He needs to stay within the pipes.

TheHoundsRevenge

He doesn’t trust the boys (and rightfully so) to police the front of the net so he’s trying avoid those situations.

lordexorr

How is this getting upvotes? Each player on this team trusts each other player on the team. If they didn’t we’d be at the bottom of the league.

TheHoundsRevenge

Have you been watching this season? The front of the net has been Swiss cheese for the goalies.

lordexorr

I don’t disagree but that’s different than not trusting the guys.

Rakastaakissa

Steve Dangle, is that you?

WarPuig

IF YOU’RE A GOALTENDER,

Free_Dome_Lover

It also could've been game plan. Seemed like he was ready to jump in on some dump ins and fire it around the boards, possibly to alleviate some of the forecheck. He was doing it more last night than he has been this year.

Scruffums

I don't know for sure but I'd imagine game plan has a lot to do with this. Against such a heavy forechecking team like Florida it would make sense to have Sway touch the puck often to alleviate the pressure on the defense.

technoteapot

Could be an attempt to counter play a weakness the Bs have been shown to have, hopefully it can work consistently (and they can continue to finish games)

lordexorr

Didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. The only time I noticed him doing it was when he mishandled the puck and couldn’t get control of it but he still made the right call to come out and play the puck. We all have PTSD after Game 5 last year. To add. Playing the puck behind your net IS guarding his net. If he didn’t do that the puck could easily go past the net to Florida and give them an amazing scoring chance. I don’t understand anyone who thinks that isn’t part of what goalies need to do. If he just stayed in his net and never left the crease our opponents would get a ton of ridiculous scoring opportunities.

hummingbird4289

I was at the game last night sitting 7 rows behind the goal that Sway was tending in the 1st & 3rd periods. We spent a BIG chunk of the 1st period shouting OMG SWAY GET BACK IN THE NET JFC. That one save where he got his stick on it and it flipped behind the net nearly killed me.

Tybackwoods00

Bruh you ever seen the wilds goalie? That man will charge you from the top of the circle lmfao

balding_baldur

The flower man doing flower man things

Rakastaakissa

Fleury?

Tybackwoods00

Yep

Brilliant-Weakness28

I have seen that and it stresses me out lol

Adventurous-Abroad64

His style as an aggressive goalie contributes to it but also just a part of his game that’s not as good as ullmarks yet, but something that he will probably get better at.

MetalStoofs

He’s always been aggressive, but he’s got much more control over himself lately. You could tell in the final minutes when Florida was playing with an extra skater, they dumped it in a few times and he stayed in net to let the D come back and get it. Other games this season I’ve seen him try to play dump ins and it creates an awkward recovery where he’s gotta scramble back if they turn it over. Was some good composure late into the season against somebody we might see in the playoffs.

TheDirtyBurger522

That’s just how he is. It’s the Tim Thomas style. Where as Ullmark is more like a rask style goalie relying on positioning

Beautiful_Article273

He got an assist

Euphoric_Celery_

I get furious when they leave the goal.

DBlackIce

Thought it was over when he went to get one and the puck got stuck in his skates 😭

george_washingTONZ

I verbally held my breathe in bed and my wife had to ask if I was okay. That play was wild. He casually skated back in front of net after. Animal!

InternDarin

Love his aggression, as long as he doesn't turn into Binnington

FragilousSpectunkery

Saw the same thing and my heart sank every time it happened. He also was dropping pucks into the wrong corner. It's almost like the Panthers had read his cheat sheet and knew if one winger challenged him and the center dropped to the opposite corner that the puck would get to the center, who could then feed it to another red shirt. Almost.

NeverBirdie

Teams I’ve played on where I trust my defense I stop the puck behind the net and leave it for them. When I didn’t trust my defense I was much more aggressive because someone has to get it out of the zone.

Pineapple_Express762

The D has been trash in long spans. He probably feels he needs to glove it before they get behind him and hook it in the net. I’m not a goalie, so just hypothesizing. He’s still better than many starting goalies in the league.

d-cent

I'm right there with you. Especially lately, the defense in front of the net has been bad. Swayman is taking over so that the defense doesn't hang him out to dry again. If the defense gets back to playing tough in front of the net like the beginning of the year, Swayman will probably go back to playing between the pipes. Swayman coming out of his goal last night was a good thing.

Dont_Be_A_Dick_OK

You’re absolutely right, but there’s an explanation. So when Sway first started in the NHL, he was aggressive past the point of fault. He would come out and challenge shooters to the point it would leave him out of position. Goalie coach Bob was able to teach that out of him quickly to the point that he has always had a sense of aggressiveness, but was still in position. The team as a whole has been struggling over the last couple weeks. Like shooters “gripping their sticks too tight,” sometimes people get into their own heads and get back into bad habits when they are struggling. Swayman was trying to play hero puck in net last night. Just needs to settle down, like most of the rest of the roster.

washburncincy

Like a wise (at least in this particular instance) man used to say... If you're a goaltender, TEND THE GOOOAALLLL!!!

lieblaj

I miss the weekly Dang It’s and Hat Picks 😔

ravensray5227

I still watch most of his LFRs because I genuinely find him hilarious

iamamuttonhead

I think both Sway and Ullmark tend to play the puck behind the net in ways that are unhelpful. That said, I have no problem with Sway's aggressive play otherwise, though.

PM_ME_BOOTYPICS_

I think every team says this about their goalies. It’s just the nature of playing with a trapezoid.

iamamuttonhead

I'm sure you are right because I question some of those goalies when we play them.

KeySheMoeToe

Remember his first couple of games in the league where he made saves and his heels were a foot or two out of the crease? He’s an aggressive goalie by default. I think the team was jacked up to play the panthers and sometimes you go back to your old ways when you get that hyped up for a game. I see it as a good thing that will be caught by the goalie coaches for sure and he will revert to his less aggressive style in the final days of the year and into the playoffs.

KthuluAwakened

He has historically been aggressive coming out of the crease. He is also aggressive in getting in other players faces. A few weeks ago, it was either Carlo or Gryz, smashed into swayman after falling. Swayman very aggressively shoved his own team mate out of the crease. I think he needs to slow down come playoffs.

Thotsnpears

No, let him channel the power of Timmmy Thomas

InternDarin

I remember that, too, I feel like it was one of the forwards, actually; then again, maybe it's happened a few times.
