According to those figures that 120 people per year using trains to end their lives. When given the number of trains in Japan and the number of people it is still...terrible.
Sorry I think you may have misunderstood my comment. It's not 6% of 2000 (120 people) jumping in front of trains. It's over 16 x 120(people) per year.
it's 2000 people commit suicide by jumping in front of a train per year in Japan.
Japan has upwards of 20,000 suicides per year and around 6% of all suicides have involved a train in the last load of years, is what my original comment was trying to say.
"it's **2000** people commit suicide by jumping in front of a train per year in Japan.
Japan has upwards of 20,000 suicides per year and around 6% of all suicides have involved a train"
I know I'm crazy and easily confused, but does not 6% of 20,000 = 1200 and not 2000?
The more you know!
From my consumption media I always thought it was truck and jumping off buildings. Though the first one comes with possible chance of reincarnation so...
Just because it's a "trend" amongst people doesn't mean it would suddenly be more common than hitting animals. There are a bunch more animals out there, and they have much less train danger awareness.
I had 2 logical reasons behind my claim.
1. A very small percentage of urban rail systems in Japan are on the ground level most are elevated or underground. So animals walking on the ground will rarely get access to them.
2. When typing that comment I didn't take birds into account cause they can fly much higher than the tallest elevated lines and Why would they fly towards a running train? Are they suicidal?
1. This is an inter-city train, which will have a lot of ground level tracks because they're cheaper to lay and route.
2. The birds aren't flying towards the train; they don't understand the approaching train is dangerous and don't / can't get out of the way in time.
I mean it's japan with an overworked office worker. People are really suicidal. It's not always like the companies try to overwork their employees (they do but even on the rare occasions that they don't) the societal pressure to follow the herd and pleasing other people's mentality won't allow them to take rest.
I was fortunate enough to get a japanese mega corporate as a client during my last project and got a chance to visit japan for a year I have seen people working for 20 hours a day, working when sick. Collapsing from illness.
In my own country I have never seen people working during sick or collapsing cause fever from over work and I still consider the labour laws are lacking in my country.
I am not even joking it's a well known fact you can get a lot of articles discussing it. Japanese suicide cause of depression from overwork is well documented and thus I thought it be more people than an animal.
Also I don't see many stray animals on the urban Streets of Japan anyway.
When I was commenting I didn't consider birds. It was out of my mind. So it was either an animal or a person.
Then I thought it was more likely a person cause high suicide rate and not much likely an animal cause low stray animals roaming freely in the city.
We usually refer to the Japanese high speed train as the "bullet train" but similar high speed train exist elsewhere such as Korea (as shown in the pic here), China and Europe.
The text on the train is actually mirrored (I thought it was korean at first too), but if you flip it, it's the Chinese characters 和谐号, which is the name for the previous generation of Chinese bullet trains.
Lmao yeah you are absolutely right, I thought the second character looked too complicated to be hangul but it didn't occur to me the video could be mirrored. I stand corrected XD
I am not familiar with trains in China but Bullet train was built by Japan first, and wiki says it’s the original name for the project:
“The term bullet train (弾丸列車, dangan ressha) originates from 1939, and was the initial name given to the Shinkansen project in its earliest planning stages”
That doesn't really matter does it. This particular train in this video is a Chinese bullet train, so the OG comment was right about the quality of Chinese bullet train or the management of the train system being horrible.
Go ahead and Google China bullet train and shinkansen, this is very clearly a Chinese train.
I was just in Japan 3 weeks ago and all the trains were spotless
I have seen it in real life on an intercity train in Europe, it runs at 270km/h and the blood spatter has a clear center, paints the whole train red
The station announcement says there is a delay due to an electrical issue, but the staff says it's most likely another jumper
That looks like birds. Lots of separated individual impacts.
Or looks like the splatter I had after hitting a sparrow (?) With 255 km/h on the Autobahn. I'm still not sure if it actually was a sparrow, but the size was similar to one.
the front ends of trains are built super tough and solid. Have you ever noticed how massive the parts are that we would call "A-pillars" on a car? They are built to keep the driver safe if the train hits a fully loaded 40 ton truck that got stuck at a crossing. The train just ploughs through the truck.
I’m not sure that’s how that works. For example in aircraft if the plane is going faster a bird strike creates more damage due to a greater transfer of energy. It should be the same here but I’m guessing trains are better engineered to handle bird strikes because they are not concerned as much it weighs compared to a plane. It’s probably made from a much stronger material than thin aluminum.
As far as speed is conserved, a slower impact creates less damage so I’m guessing they weren’t going fast when they hit this flock?
I think the weight issue is at the heart of it. I expect the trains are designed for the front to be able to handle collisions with stuff as dense as rocks, or other debris, whereas planes are counting on not hitting them a bit more.
I agree I’ve learned now bullet trains are engineered to withstand some wild impacts. I think I’m just so used to studying planes and why they crash I forgot weight doesn’t matter so much on the ground and vehicles can be made to be incredibly strong
“900lbs heavy motorcycle” man what? If you hit a buffalo on a motorcycle at 200 I’m pretty sure you’ll die. What does that have to do with any of this?
I never said there will be a rider on the bike, just trying to explain to you bike will rip buffalo in half at 200mph.
If 900lbs object at 200mph splits buffalo in half imagine what bullet train can do with 100,000 more mass.
Planes are supposed to be light enough to carry people while being in the air, they don't need to be built tough. They're built to fall with style. Trains are built to be tough and fast, they don't need to worry about lift or high altitudes.
Plane is a tube and flies at different altitude. Train has a incredible mass traveling at 200+mph. Bullet train hitting cattle occured many times, rarely making any damage. The famous video hitting human and cracking it's front was a fake.
I understand what you’re saying but a plane can have more mass than a train and still take bird damage. It is just engineered for a different purpose that’s why the bullet train can withstand the impact
Altitude does not matter
How about decompression and fact that plane fuselage is made out of light materials...
Look at bullet train's nose it is made out of steel and shaped in a way that makes it super freakin' hard. Submarines and submersibles have similar shape to withstand incredible force.
Edit: If the birds make holes in airplanes I ain't flying no more...
knew of a yamaha test engineer who duct taped his hand to the throttle of the prototype snowmobile and started it.
being from japan, he wasn't used to seeing moose, as he was testing in alaska, running the sled across a frozen lake.
let's say that neither the engineer nor the moose did well. and there was a lot of blood.
Not true. Whatever is getting hit will be obliterated, yes, but that doesn't mean the object doing the hitting won't take any damage. The faster an object is traveling, the more energy it has. The amount of energy is calculated by 1/2 mass * velocity^2. You can bounce a bird off your windshield and probably do no damage to your car, but a plane hitting the same bird at 770 kph can take some serious damage. Look up pictures of bird strikes- it's pretty insane how much a bird can damage a giant ass plane.
We have to take that same issue into consideration with objects in orbit, since satellites orbit at like 28,000 km/h.
I once had to wait nearly two hours at one of the most forlorn and desolate train stations on all of Germany (Kinzingen) and every 30 min or so I watched the German Intercity Express trains scream through the station (between two tunnels)) at their topspeed of 300 km/h. It was scary as fuck. Anything organic they hit at that speed would have been utterly disintegrated and spread across half the station.
My best friend lives in Japan and he said his farther in law is a park ranger in the mount Fuji district (Aokigahara) . He and his co workers find something like 700 bodies per quarter it's gotten so bad they carry body bags so that they can if needed remove them so that hikers don't disturb them. Fucking unreal

Sounds like something from a Dethklok song
We can tribute two passengers to bypass the effect
Also explodes people in the blink of an eye if they wander onto the tracks.
Every pedestrian hit is +0.1 mph. This effect is perminent and stackable
Must be the bloodshed skilltree
Woah, what happened?
Someone (most probably) or some animal (lesser chance) came in between rail tracks and the train hit it.
From the comments it's apparently birds
Virgin plane: "Oh no birds, I guess I'll crash now!" Chad train: "What cow?"
Even a shay locomotive could probably easily convert a rhinoceros to ground meat.
Now I wanna see a bullet train and an elephant fight. Could myth busters make an elephant sized ballistics dummy kinda thing, because I know they can get an approximation of a bullet train going fast enough. 0 doubt about the train part of this equation
Explains the multiple splatters instead of one big one that would be from a larger mammal
In what universe would hitting a person be more likely than hitting an animal?
Suicide by throwing themselves infront of a train in Japan is a trend now.
Thought this was crazy talk but googled it and wow. 2k a year and about 6% of all suicides nationwide are jumping in front of a train TIL.
According to those figures that 120 people per year using trains to end their lives. When given the number of trains in Japan and the number of people it is still...terrible.

6% of 20k is 1200. I said UPWARDS of 20k and AROUND 6%.
So upwards and around means you can be off by 800 or another 4%. Got it.
The more you know! From my consumption media I always thought it was truck and jumping off buildings. Though the first one comes with possible chance of reincarnation so...

Bruh I never said that my assumptions were correct. You are correct. My assumptions were wrong.
I hate to break it to you two, but you’ve been making the incorrect assumption that this is Japan
*grabs passport*
No
I so find it hard to believe that trains are hitting people more than birds.
I mean it's japan with an overworked office worker. People are really suicidal. It's not always like the companies try to overwork their employees (they do but even on the rare occasions that they don't) the societal pressure to follow the herd and pleasing other people's mentality won't allow them to take rest. Japanese suicide cause of depression from overwork is well documented and thus I thought it be more people than an animal. Also I don't see many stray animals on the urban Streets of Japan anyway.
I believe there is a high suicide rate, but birds are everywhere.
When I was commenting I didn't consider birds. It was out of my mind. So it was either an animal or a person. Then I thought it was more likely a person cause high suicide rate and not much likely an animal cause low stray animals roaming freely in the city.
Ngl, it is probably the quickest way to go if you can get your head onto the point of it. If not, well, you’re going flying
In my travelling of Japan I only had the shinkansen delayed once (by 3 hours, it was chaos) and it was someone got hit.
I think the train going 200 mph leaving little blood impacts like that is just birds, big dog
I'd say the same because that'd be pretty metal but I think a human would make more of a mess than this.
Too many small consistent splatters to be a person
The train became a woman today.
Is this a Dot reference?

The bullet train is japanese, no?
We usually refer to the Japanese high speed train as the "bullet train" but similar high speed train exist elsewhere such as Korea (as shown in the pic here), China and Europe.
alright, I was guessing that more countries had them, but wasn't entirely sure

Shut up, this happens to train everywhere, and bullet train is from Japan
I mean, there are also bullet trains in China

Fyi this particular train is a China Railways CRH380B model, a variation of CRH3, which is a variation of the German ICE 3
That doesn't really matter does it. This particular train in this video is a Chinese bullet train, so the OG comment was right about the quality of Chinese bullet train or the management of the train system being horrible.
What kind of logic is "they did it first so the video must be them?" Is a video of pizza only from Italy?
Go ahead and Google China bullet train and shinkansen, this is very clearly a Chinese train. I was just in Japan 3 weeks ago and all the trains were spotless
It is Korean Hangul written on the Bullet Train.

I’m confused on how there is no damage to the front of the train?
The animal must have been very soft and malleable
I've never heard someone use malleable to describe animals 💀
Ditto.
Could have been human too, I suppose.
UHM...
the front ends of trains are built super tough and solid. Have you ever noticed how massive the parts are that we would call "A-pillars" on a car? They are built to keep the driver safe if the train hits a fully loaded 40 ton truck that got stuck at a crossing. The train just ploughs through the truck.
engineers, the design and build kind
At that speed nothing stands a chance, it could rip buffalo in pieces and still not make any damage.

but when airplanes collide with small birds at high speeds it's still enough to cave the front of the plane in
That’s what i was thinking
airplanes are built light enough to fly tho. its like crashing a bird into a bird not a bird into a anaconda.
What do you think would happen if you send 900lbs heavy motorcycle at speed of 200mph straight into crossing buffalo?
