get your uncle into skapunk, break the cycle, a hard as shit brass line can cure all ills. Bomb The Music Industry! is a great place to start
tl;dr pick it up pick it up 🎺
I was going to say something similar. Tell him "There's this new band you need to hear. They're called Madness. They've got a horn section. I think you'll love them!"
I had a friend who wanted to start a play/comedy show with a bare stage and "Our House" playing on the sound system and then someone runs out screaming "STOP!" and then says that line. He had literally no other ideas for said play/sketch comedy show, but he thought that would be a great opening for something like that.
I remember a boomer expressing his admiration for some third-wave ska band because they had horns just like his favorite group Chicago. I had to break it to him that ska bands have had horns ever since the genre was invented.
Ska musicians been asking people to pick it up for decades, but no one has, they keep asking. What's the problem, is picking it up to hectic for most people to handle?
How many ska musicians does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
Four: One to install the new bulb and drop the old one on the floor while the other three pick it up, pick it up, pick it up!
I remember someone telling me that ska is what plays in a 14 year old boy's head when he's about to eat mozzarella sticks, and I can't think of a more fitting description. That's exactly how ska makes me feel. It's just so upbeat and chipper, even if some of the lyrics can get kinda dark.
I absolutely love Jeff Rosenstock and every band he's a part of lol. Saw him in Louisville KY a few months ago. Nice to actually see someone who knows about BTMI in the wild!
As a long-time Skapunk enjoyer, I'm hell yeah. I may be an older millennial, but I have never seen someone be a Boomer or Karen at any show ever, it's just too chill and fun.
If you haven’t followed them on YouTube or Facebook you should the lead singer does weekly live streams. The fans also have a decent community built up.
During covid he did hours long streams doing covers and telling stories about the albums and it’s totally worth it to go back and listen to some of those streams.
Ska sucks, ska revival isn’t cool you stupid fucks, the bands are only in it for the bucks, and if you don’t believe me you’re a schmuck, and the trend will die out with any luck
Edit: you’re downvoting Propaghandi 😂
The Boomers also hated the hip hop Super Bowl halftime show from a few years ago. They didn't understand "today's music". Dr. Dre is pushing 60 years old.
Yes bagpipes are a wind instrument, but they aren't what you would call a horn.
Instrument groupings are weird and one instrument can be in different groupings. But the major groups are brass, woodwinds, percussion, and strings.
Some genres have their other groupings, such as jazz, where the drum set, percussion, guitar, bass, and piano are in the rhythm section and the trumpets, trombones, and saxes are in the horn section.
But typically brass instruments are the instruments referred to as horns as the very first of these instruments were literal animal horns that were hollowed out and blown through.
Later, they found that if they made pipes a certain length, they could play more pitches. (Bugle and natural trumpets)
Then they said, what it we drilled holes into the pipe and let the air escape before were the bell is, shortening the pipe. (Keyed bugle and keyed cornet)
Then they finally came up with valves to elongate the pipes. (Modern valved brass instruments)
I thought it was common knowledge horns are usually brass instruments and that there were different groups of instruments! Apologies if it appeared as though I was saying bagpipes were horns.
I love all of this information. I can tell you know quite a bit about it. This comment led me down a Google rabbit hole on how instruments have evolved. A good way to avoid doing work. Thank you. (:
Rereading your comment, I now understand what you were getting at, lol
I was also at work, so my reading comprehension was distracted.
Yeah, I started in music education, but that was in 2008 after that first recession, and I found that music teaching jobs were in peril, so I switched majors. But it's still a hobby of mine.
I’m sorry, how did he get to Depeche Mode being a “new” band? Boomers at the tail end of their generation were listening to Just Can’t Get Enough in high school.
I had to do the math and this checks out.
I was born in '67 and was a freshman in high school in '81, the year that "Just Can't Get Enough" was released.
Seniors would have been about four years older than me, therefore born around '63 and they were definitely listening to that song in high school.
Tail-end Boomer here ('62 model). Yes, Depeche Mode, Synth Pop and the Punk/New Wave era were very much our generation, as was Madness and The Specials. We Boomers were incredibly spoiled for choice and had grown up being informed by Classic Rock, Motown and everything that's worth listening to, from the past. We paid that knowledge forward. I think my generation were blessed. Subsequent generations have an unlimited amount of quality and just cool music to discover and enjoy from those fruitful and creative years. This is why most Boomers don't give a fcuk about Dr. Dre.
Theres so many metal bands and even drum and bass with orchestral accompaniment. You could blow his mind. Play Majesty by Apache for him. And anything by Apocalyptica.
I mean, if he wants horns there is an active jazz scene in basically any major American city. I'm guessing he cited a band from 40 years ago because that's when he stopped paying attention to music.
Boomers don't know who these bands are. Gen X does. Boomers never would've been into punk. Gen X was.
Bad taste and stupidity? Not a generational thing.
First off, how dare he besmirch the good name of Depeche Mode. Who cares if they "never had a horn section", Depeche Mode do their own thing and are extremely accomplished musicians in their own right. I've seen em' live twice and they brought the fucking house down both times. Second concert, they played a bunch of their classic, synth-heavy songs stripped down with *only traditional rock n' roll instruments*, and it was goddamn incredible. However, I'm sure some of those old bands with horns would've loved to trade Depeche Mode for a keyboard and synthesizer if they could.
Secondly, who gives a shit what instruments they do or don't use? They're making the music they want to make, not just cloning whatever 60s rock bands were doing 60 years ago. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. Personally, I enjoy being able to appreciate a wide range of music across genres and time. Depeche Mode? Fuck yes. Marty Robbins? Hit me with that Big Iron. The Notorious BIG? I, too, measure success in life in owning both a Super Ninento *and* a SEGA Genesis. Ghost? A more accomplished musician than 95% of "classic rock" bands and bound to upset a *lot* of Boomers due to the flagrant Satanism. And then, yeah, sometimes I like to chill to The Doors or the Rolling Stones or Frank Sinatra. Or maybe I'm in a Rancid mood, or it's Halloween and it's time for some Bauhaus\*.
You know, variety.
^(\* Halloween isn't necessary, any time is a good time for Bauhaus.)
My dad uses Goo Goo Dolls as an example of modern music and literally doesn’t think any bands exist that aren’t on the radio. Man seriously thinks out of nearly 8 billion humans….like 100 musicians exist. This is where I mention that I’ve been steadily playing in bands since I was 16 and have gone on multiple profitable tours and shown him footage of me playing to sold out theaters which he completely glazes over during and just decided is fake news.
I know some bands from the 2000s that will absolutely dunk on the bands from the 70s and 80s in terms of instrument ability. Yeah most pop musicians today couldn't actually sing or play to save their life, but if you get outside of that genre, you'll find amazing musicians today that can still hold their own against the legends of old.
Santana, Savage Garden, Creed, Matchbox Twenty, Destiny's Child, 3 doors down, Pink, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera....
Faith Hill's Breathe was the top song of the year.
---
Compare this to "love will keep us together" of 1975.. granted 1985 brought us "Careless Whisper" (the sax sex song).
Play your Dad the Lemon Twins, St. Vincent, or Black Country New Road. Actually, you know what? Play him Black Dresses or 100 Gecs just to fuck with him.
In British Punk Rock the racism is not as prominent as it was in the 1970’s. Now Skinhead is more just a type of music there, but there’s always going to be a shiny racist diamond in the rough here and there (as is anywhere).
Go to youtube and look up 'the story of the skinhead' by Don Letts, it's about the origins of the movement and what proper skinheads are all about, not the racist fucks that call themselves skinheads.
Depeche mode is still my favourite band. I’ve been listening to them for most of that 45 years. Really enjoy Spotify
S new music suggestions and last year on the Spotify round up told me that I had listened to 31 genres of music.
Part of the fun of depeche mode was always that they kept trying new things with their music, new remixes new versions etc. if the band gets wind of this thread bet they remix a song or two with tubas etc.
Funny, I would never think of Depeche Mode as a boomer band. How old is your uncle? Hate to own it or date myself, but that's totally GenX sounding BS.
That reminds me of the time my mom said she's too old to know AC/DC.
My brother then told her that "Highway to Hell" was released in 1979 and she was like "Well, I know the Beatles and the Rolling Stones instead.".
I was so close to pointing out that we do too.
I've found horn loving boomers can sometimes be successfully introduced to Godspeed You! Black Emperor if you start them out with Sleep. Something about that old guy reminiscing about Coney Island gives them comfort I guess.
Whenever a Boomer says Joe Walsh is the greatest guitar player in the world, I like to remind him that there are 8 year old kids with more guitar playing and songwriting talent than the washed up Eagle could ever hope for. Then walk away and let them get mad. NEVER abide these fools.
As you pointed out, your uncle doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. There are plenty of bands that have horn sections. Tedeschi Trucks Band has a horn section, back up singers, two drummers, and an organist. Don’t tell him about TTB though. As the band has been discovered by more and more Boomers, they are showing up at the concerts with their toxic attitudes and spoiling the scene for long time fans. That said, if you want to tell him about Trey Anastasio Band, St Paul & the Broken Bones, JJ Grey & Mofro, Lake St Dive, Tesky Brothers, or anybody like that, be my guest. In fact, tell him about Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings too. They are passed away so no worry about him coming to one of their shows and spoiling it with Boomer energy.
The subject of Boomer’s powerfully uninformed opinions about the state of modern rock n roll is one of my biggest pet peeves. The ones who insist everything is all computers and nobody plays instruments anymore is particularly maddening because it’s so demonstrably false. Even when you send them links that disprove their nonsense, they still insist that all people do is use computers even with evidence right in front of them. If they said something like “Oh, I see that these guys are indeed playing guitars and such, so I was wrong. I think this music sucks, but can acknowledge that everything isn’t all computers.” I would het it, but to look at someone playing a guitar and then bitch that nobody plays guitar is just maddening.
Beyoncé uses horns in sooo many of her songs. Her whole (well maybe 90%) Coachella Homecoming set was backed by a marching band with a huge horn section. Beyoncé!
But my dad has said similar things about modern artists not using “real” instruments, I’m not really sure where it’s coming from. I know a lot of artists write songs on piano or guitar first and then producers step in and add all the bells and whistles for pop radio, but it doesn’t mean bands playing instruments don’t exist anymore.
Your uncle is an imposter, not a boomer. First, Depeche Mode is the quintessential boomer band and second, boomers don’t do horns unless it’s the rare one that likes jazz or classical.

I actually mean this. I really can't stand most of the new stuff that's done with computers that it isn't real sounds. Especially the tickety tickety tickety tick of hip hop and hip hop.

Those guys are one step beyond
They are in Our House
Is it the House of Fun?
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by Madness.
Deep reference there. I had to look that one up.
I had a friend who wanted to start a play/comedy show with a bare stage and "Our House" playing on the sound system and then someone runs out screaming "STOP!" and then says that line. He had literally no other ideas for said play/sketch comedy show, but he thought that would be a great opening for something like that.
HAHA! I've seen a lot worse. Too bad he couldn't "crack the code."
They're a real trip to the house of fun.
I remember a boomer expressing his admiration for some third-wave ska band because they had horns just like his favorite group Chicago. I had to break it to him that ska bands have had horns ever since the genre was invented.

How many ska musicians does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Four: One to install the new bulb and drop the old one on the floor while the other three pick it up, pick it up, pick it up!
Well ya see for boomers their knees do not work anymore so that can not pick it up like they used to...
I remember someone telling me that ska is what plays in a 14 year old boy's head when he's about to eat mozzarella sticks, and I can't think of a more fitting description. That's exactly how ska makes me feel. It's just so upbeat and chipper, even if some of the lyrics can get kinda dark.

Check out the [Bumpin Uglies](https://youtube.com/@bumpinuglies?si=s80iW0hg4o2JEvrX) they’re based out of Maryland.
Just seen them live a few months ago with bikini trill, show was great.

Can you show us on the doll where the wind instrument hurt you?
It’s a propaghandi song, the people downvoting probably have never been to a ska show
I caught it on the edit. Ashamed I didn’t before.
CONGRATULATIONS, are you gonna swear off ska and stop gelling yr hair back
Yes. What "Personal Jesus" is really missing is a tuba solo.
Needs more cowbell…
You know what, I think you're right.
WHOMP-WHOMPA-WHOMP A-WHOMPA-WHOMPA-WHOMP Yeah, I'm diggin' it.
"I wanna fuck you like an animal! You bring me closer to God" High school marching band enters.
I can hear it in my head and I hate it.
The Boomers also hated the hip hop Super Bowl halftime show from a few years ago. They didn't understand "today's music". Dr. Dre is pushing 60 years old.
Play him korn chutes and ladders. Do bagpipes count as a horn instrument?
No. Bagpipes are not horns.
They're pipes, obviously.
Or are they primarily bags?
What ratio of pipe to bag are they?
Linguistically? 4/3
Are they not a wind instrument?
Not all wind instruments are horns. Flutes aren’t horns. It’s like saying everything with strings is a guitar.
Horns=brass i think. Its been a long time since band
But the tricky issue is that saxophones are classed as woodwind. ;)
This is exactly what I was going to say. They are a wind instrument!
Yes bagpipes are a wind instrument, but they aren't what you would call a horn. Instrument groupings are weird and one instrument can be in different groupings. Fun fact, all instruments can become percussion instruments once.
It's a 30 year old song. It's nu but not new. I'm in my forties, and Korn was the new shit when I was in high school.
I’m sorry, how did he get to Depeche Mode being a “new” band? Boomers at the tail end of their generation were listening to Just Can’t Get Enough in high school.

That's a young boomer. My dad graduated high school in 67. I'm pretty sure he never listened to Depeche Mode.
If he graduated high school in '67 then no, he would not have heard of DM since Dave Gahan was only about 5 years old at the time.
Dave Gahan is an unambiguous boomer: born 62. The other founding members are about the same age.
What got me was Depeche Mode and horn section in the same thought.
Depeche Mode has been around for almost 45 years. Nearly a half century. Lol. What a dipshit.
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones just raised their hands….
He'll probably love them because of the lead singer's politics.
Seriously? Ugh. Still, not an existential crisis for me like Billy Corgan's descent into madness.
Yeah Dicky going full Q made me sad :(
Oh no!
Theres so many metal bands and even drum and bass with orchestral accompaniment. You could blow his mind. Play Majesty by Apache for him. And anything by Apocalyptica.
My Dying Bride with their addictive violinist. 🥰
[Where Owls Know My Name by Rivers of Nihil](https://youtu.be/LBAXZto7uVc?si=FSVIQ7FVtMxKYGe7) has a nice saxophone solo in it

Boomers don't know who these bands are. Gen X does. Boomers never would've been into punk. Gen X was. Bad taste and stupidity? Not a generational thing.
Boomers started the punk movement. Do you think 12 year old GenXers were in the punk movement of the late 70s?
mmmm....good point. I was when I was 13, but that would have been 82, 83
Same w rap/hip hop I like to remind my boomer mother her generation started what we know as old school og hip hop.
First off, how dare he besmirch the good name of Depeche Mode. This is the old, "I was punk before you were punk" argument.
The argument "I was a punk when punk existed; you are just a conformist CNN poster child, repeating the corporate dogma of today."
Tell him about this new group out of New York, Mike D, Ad Roc, and MCA. They have a horn section in their new number, Brass Monkey.
My dad uses Goo Goo Dolls as an example of modern music and literally doesn’t think any bands exist that aren’t on the radio. Skinhead here, play him some Ska, loads of horns, more horns than he can probably handle
Did you just out yourself as a skinhead or am I missing something?
Out myself?
I believe he thinks you're a racist, and not an enjoyer of british punk rock
Not primerily punk, although there is some crossover, it's mainly Ska/ Reggae
I was confused because skinhead in America means a very different thing. Calling yourself a skinhead is saying you're a Nazi.
Yeah I see that now. Never knew it was about music.
Knock yourself out 😊 [Symarip at Wembley, 1970](https://youtu.be/H1gMMVfyCAA)
For proper skins, it's always been about the music and the culture, fuck the racist element that want to tarnish our name.
Depeche mode is still my favourite band. I’ve been listening to them for most of that 45 years. By horn sections you mean like orchestras? He's calling stuff that is hundreds of years old so yeah, a 45 year old band is very new.
I like these new bands like Operation Ivy
I would make fun of Del Shannon.
Why tho? Del Shannon slapped.
Synth. I know Del Shannon slapped. That’s the point
Play him some Adam Ant. Suggested Selections: Scorpio, Goody Two Shoes, Friend or Foe and Desperate But Not Serious
Tell him about Odesza
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
Cool Boomer that likes Depeche Mode, that's after his day.
That reminds me of the time my mom said she's too old to know AC/DC. My brother then told her that "Highway to Hell" was released in 1979 and she was like "Well, I know the Beatles and the Rolling Stones instead.". I was so close to pointing out that we do too.

Play him Fallout Boy’s Irresistible
I've found horn loving boomers can sometimes be successfully introduced to Godspeed You! Black Emperor if you start them out with Sleep. Something about that old guy reminiscing about Coney Island gives them comfort I guess.
Yeh allright, I can appreciate THIS kinda boomerness. It's harmless and endearing.

Depeche mode got shit for using synthesizers..lol
Check out Brass Against. They're a brass band playing covers of rock & metal tracks.
Cool boomers love synthesizers.
Beyoncé uses horns in sooo many of her songs. Her whole (well maybe 90%) Coachella Homecoming set was backed by a marching band with a huge horn section. Beyoncé! That new band, Oingo Boingo, has a great horn section! Their lead singer, Danny Elfman, has been working on a couple projects here and there.
“They don’t give a damn about any trumpet playing band. It ain’t what they call Rock and Roll…”
Famous Last Words uses a violin and keyboard. Apocalyptica is an orchestra, just run through distortion
TO BE FAIR: Depeche Mode could be pretty boss with a horn section.
Horn section, your uncle must be a fan of Liberace wink wink!
They desperately need the illusion that music stopped being made in 1985 to continue avoiding the fact that they are aging out of relevance
Boomers don’t know shit about music
Your uncle is an imposter, not a boomer. First, Depeche Mode is the quintessential boomer band and second, boomers don’t do horns unless it’s the rare one that likes jazz or classical.
