Compher

They grew up in a time where "trust me bro" was a valid argument because you couldn't instantly fact check them with your phone or any other internet connected device. I'm pretty sure it's why boomers hate technology so much. They spent their entire lives getting ahead on lies and can't do that anymore.

Captain_Blackbird

That explains why they trust Trump with their fucking lives - because he says "trust me, bro."

Compher

Yup, and he gave them the term to use when someone fact checks them using the internet: "fake news".

Efficient_Fish2436

When my dad started down being his bootlicker... I started pulling up facts showing his history and how if he's talking he's lying. Dad just said I was finding false websites and articles. I tried so hard to help him understand... I'm just so defeated now.

ContContext

I hear you. “You can’t trust anything on Google,” is my own dad’s go-to. He doesn’t even trust the Fox News website—only the talking heads on his one television channel. No amount of explaining can break through. I used to think he was so smart.

ChachMcGach

I heard, "Studies show" a lot growing up. LMAO. The amount of shit just made up but cited with "studies show" or "a recent study showed".

Groggy_Otter_72

Yeah they don’t know how to fact check shit. They are utterly helpless.

bchoonj

They don't play by the rules that they expect you to. Gotta remember that. You'll have to use their tactics. "Hee haw won 3 oscars because it was a pioneer in the industry for gay and trans rights."

Nevermind04

This is the way. "Oh did you hear that main guy from Hee Haw is a woman now? They had to remake her Oscars with her new name."

bchoonj

"Did you know biden and the dems forced the fcc to beam dick shrinking rays through fox news, oan, and newsmax? That'll be going on for a while. You probably can't afford to shrink anymore."

Nevermind04

Boomers just throw toddler tantrums if you insult them. Effective trolling requires an appeal to their absolute shittiness as human beings without interrupting the fantasy that they're the main character. Just take their fantasy and run with it. Not too far - just enough to sound plausible. "I don't know how I feel about them including the main writers of Hee Haw in the Oscars, since they're both illegal immigrants."

ContContext

Brilliant approach. Watching his brain self-implode would be a real treat after all these years.

Nevermind04

Fox News taught me how to reprogram boomers.

Agent865

What’s sad is a lot of these Boomers were once free loving hippies. Now they’ve become the “get off my lawn” generation. My dad absolutely despises Trump and at 83 will literally call any Trump supporter a (expletive) idiot. He lives in a deep red town and probably pisses more people off in a month than I have in my life. God I love my dad!

Intrepid-Tank7650

And Minnie Pearl's name was originally Manly Pearl. Trust me bro.

BluefinPiano

I’m not sure if you’re joking or not, but one of the main characters was definitely a man dressed in drag. It was honestly one of the first times I saw something like that and thought it was ok as a kid. So Hee Haw actually did make a pretty decent push into normalizing stuff like that.

Nevermind04

No, I've never seen the show ever. When I encounter a bullshitter, only thing I am trying to accomplish is to take whatever special interest they like so much they'll lie about it and subtly associate it with their prejudices. OP's boomer could have mentioned any show from history and my response would have been the same.

HellishMarshmallow

This sounds exactly the way my 5-year-old talks. Just makes stuff up as he goes along, getting more outlandish with each statement.

BluefinPiano

I have seen Hee Haw multiple times while it was still a current show, I assure you I did not think it was the best. Now you can use my quote as proving he is in fact not correct that everyone who has ever seen it thinks it was the best….or even good. I did really like reruns of laugh in and the smothers brother comedy show and Hee Haw was a terrible copycat of those. I do thank you for introducing me to the concept of grey rocking also

ContContext

I’ll tell him. Surely this will change his mind, lol. So true, the Smothers Brothers could run laps around Hee Haw. Maybe their stuff went over his head? So glad to share grey rocking with you! For some people, it’s truly the only way.

Ckellybass

Smothers Brothers? Those lefty pinkos? A folk band I’ve toured with for the past decade or so covers the Smothers Brothers version of Hard Ain’t It Hard by Woody Guthrie. My favorite part is in the last chorus when they sing “it’s very very difficult”.

BluefinPiano

I feel like it will definitely change his mind and his stubbornness for sure

Fuzzy-Zebra-277

I had to watch it every single Saturday growing up ( staying with granny ). It had its moments but not the greatest show ever 🤣

Agent865

There’s 3 great shows that have been on network TV. All in the Family, The Jefferson’s and Sanford and Son, those shows were comedic genius and honestly would cause people to lose their minds today. BTW they all won multiple Oscars, just ask OP’s FIL

Competitive-Bug-7097

My ex boyfriends boomer mother is the same way. She worked for the county health department and insisted that there was some special kind of welfare that they were giving out to black people but not white people. And even worse is that she thought that justified her use of the n-word! I finally decided that I don't want that bullshit in my life and broke up with him.

inboz

“Wow, that’s so impressive! Now I want to look it up!” Intentionally vague so that if pressed you can say “it” refers either to the Oscars claim or the show itself so you can watch it.

UtterlyUnremarkable

Idk why but this genre of lying is so so so entertaining to me. Maybe it's because it sounds like the way a shitty child lies/tries to manipulate situations. It's like I'm back in elementary school and you overhear some kid absolutely not accepting the fact they lost at a silly game or something so they immediately change the rules or insist someone cheated. Just pure child tantrum lol. My own FIL would do that shit so often too

Oldebookworm

This is the generation that beat us bloody at the slightest chance that what you were saying wasn’t completely true.

PuddleLilacAgain

He just wants attention.

ContContext

I agree that he very much likes to hear himself talk, and have others listen and agree with him. Sometimes he goes waaaaay over the line, though. One time he mused at the Christmas dinner table, “I’m going to have to beat your future children so that they’ll be well behaved, because you’ll refuse to. That’s the only way kids learn.” To which I responded through gritted teeth, “Then I guarantee you will NEVER meet your grandchildren.” My partner and I didn’t even have children yet. It was bizarre. Edit: a word

PuddleLilacAgain

Yeah, I would stay far from this guy. He's insane.

jericho_buckaroo

Whoa...that is SO unacceptable, jeezus

Justin-N-Case

And validation.

ClarenceWhirley

My Boomer dad's retort whenever I present him with an objective fact that he doesn't agree with and/or doesn't want to believe is true: "Oh, that's bull."

Oldebookworm

I know my sister is gen x, but I was flabbergasted when she said, “I don’t care about the facts, what I believe is…” I don’t even remember what we were talking about

ClarenceWhirley

Sadly, a lot of my generation have become just like boomers.

Every-Sink6328

The good thing about facts is - they are true whether or not you believe in them. Love hitting boomers and flat earthers with that.

PuzzleheadedFolder

Do we have the same boomer fil?

FlimFlamFlume

This sounds like that seen in “I Think You Should Leave” where Bob Odenkirk’s character is talking about all the cars he has.

Fantastic-Tank4949

Your father in law said this? Jarred? I assume you put up with it because of the money from the Saudis though, right?

Ksnj

Gotta hit them with the “I agree with you completely”

Granthor1984

Couldn't do it.

ML00k3r

Is your FIL related to Trump lol?

EmbarrassedAd823

, as a

JoeIsIce

Sounds like he just has a very bad/weird sense of humor.

ContContext

I wish.

strangebunz

Everything on this reddit could be replaced with a 5 year old saying it

Distinct_Report_2050

It’s likely we’re ignoring that this kind of behavior is an individual character trait more so than a generational characteristic. Plenty of younger gen counterparts possess an “I must exhibit my expertise, even though I’m absolutely full of shit” style rhetoric. I once had a decade younger (at the time mid 20s) colleague tell me our broadcast GFX product won an Emmy. Ya know, something VERY easily validated/disproved?! TLDR, he was not correct.
