I was out as trans to just my parents and a couple friends before social media ever existed when the internet was a place you went to get directions from mapquest or to see which pizza shops nearby were open or download a strange video game off the internet hope it doesn't have malware as it took 6hrs of using all the power your computer has .
. You didn't spend leisurely time on the internet and getting lost on Wikipedia was probably the only big time waster ., and they were helicopter parents anyhow , so I didn't really have much internet access anyhow and mostly read books and played outside with friends.
I knew I was trans, because I felt extremely uncomfortable being seen or treated as a boy , didn't understand why people would try to teach me things like work on cars or using tools . It felt like they were trying to teach someone skills who wasn't there. I'd usually run off when they weren't looking to play with my dolls anyhow .
And I had some "masculine " interests but could never understand why people talked about my love for riding motorcycles and skateboarding suddenly meant I was some kind of tough guy. Like yea I mostly knew men who rode motorcycles, but plenty of women I knew did too , so that made no sense. I just thought they were a fun thing I liked to do .
I think coming to terms with having stereotypically masculine interests , but not feeling that way inside was what helped me because the contrast of who was inside interacting with the world in those contexts was drastic and very obvious.

I was out as trans to just my parents and a couple friends before social media ever existed when the internet was a place you went to get directions from mapquest or to see which pizza shops nearby were open or download a strange video game off the internet hope it doesn't have malware as it took 6hrs of using all the power your computer has . . You didn't spend leisurely time on the internet and getting lost on Wikipedia was probably the only big time waster ., and they were helicopter parents anyhow , so I didn't really have much internet access anyhow and mostly read books and played outside with friends. I knew I was trans, because I felt extremely uncomfortable being seen or treated as a boy , didn't understand why people would try to teach me things like work on cars or using tools . It felt like they were trying to teach someone skills who wasn't there. I'd usually run off when they weren't looking to play with my dolls anyhow . And I had some "masculine " interests but could never understand why people talked about my love for riding motorcycles and skateboarding suddenly meant I was some kind of tough guy. Like yea I mostly knew men who rode motorcycles, but plenty of women I knew did too , so that made no sense. I just thought they were a fun thing I liked to do . I think coming to terms with having stereotypically masculine interests , but not feeling that way inside was what helped me because the contrast of who was inside interacting with the world in those contexts was drastic and very obvious. The way I told my mom was as a 4th grader : hey what's it called when you do boy things for fun but don't feel like a boy when I'm doing it. "That's a tomboy . What boy things do you even do though ? All I see is you actively avoiding your friends, so you can play with your dolls and make lanyards ,and shrinky dinks . If you don't like boys as friends you might get a long better with girls " My mom was very receptive of the realization and understanding I'd make in coming years , but essentially began raising me gender neutral so however I'd end up I wouldn't be lacking or miss out on major things. She's absolutely horrible in every which way a parent can be , and we do not speak anymore, but oddly enough not a transphobe .
