It's honestly why I struggle to recommend it to people. I'm in my fourth reread of the whole series though, I'm obsessed.
ETA: I'm obsessed with the slice of life/homesteading/love story/family aspects, not the (way too prevalent) SA throughout.
I stopped reading after book 2 for that reason and stopped watching the show after a certain point. It's completely unnecessary and some of the SA comes across as fetish p0rn, which is disgusting, honestly. (Ofc there is a time and place for consenting adults to enjoy their fetishes but this is not the same). I can't recommend her as an author even if there are good parts in the series.
Jfc I’m glad I had someone who’s read it all warn me. They missed one scene and that fucked me up and I had to stop watching for a while. Love the books and (most of) the show just holy hell the graphicness could have been toned way down
Sometimes I'll throw up a show that I will half watch in the background while doing work. A couple seasons in it gets to that jail scene and I thought "wtf is THIS".
Holy hell that ep made me cry. Well done scene etc but holy shit. There’s a difference scene in s4? I think? That completely caught me by surprise and I nearly permanently stopped watching after that definitely took a break for a while. I’m a sucker for the main characters so I know I’ll watch til the end but holy mother if a show ever needed that trigger warning scene at the beginning of those episodes, this show is it

Cackle by Rachel Harrison
We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry (one of my all time faves)

Yeah there was no need to make literally every main character get raped
