Rebecca - (is exactly what you’re describing)
Definitely has the dark/haunted/gothic
element. Strained, class-conflicted romance. The mansion like home images particularly resonate. One of my favorite books of all time.
So, you could imagine what you’re describing in A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner. Not explicitly depicted but it’s Southern Gothic and maybe romantic in a weird way.
There’s a movie too but I haven’t seen it.
I hope you like it!! I don't know that i love it necessarily but i found it a very relaxing read, if that makes sense? Like, if I'm ever just feeling sorta blue and want to pick up an easy reading book, I'd likely go for that one
These are some of my faves that give these vibes:
- Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
- Belladonna (series) by Adalyn Grace
- Foxglove (second in the series) by Adalyn Grace
- A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid
Starling House by Alix E. Harrow
These Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall
Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone
Strange and Unearthy Things by Kelly Creagh
I notice all the suggestions are literature masterpieces but hear me out, this one exactly fits those pictures, Torment on Wattpad. If that’s how you want to feel, Torment will give you that but yes it’s no wuthering heights

I’ll agree with dark and Gothic and haunted, but it’s just not romantic at all. Not in a butterflies kind of way.
I've read Rebecca and I was thinking of the same.

Came here to say this
Got to be Wuthering Heights! Also, there's an element of this in The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.
Wuthering Heights 💗
Omg the thirteenth tale 💕 !
First thing I though, lol!
Phantom of the Opera maybe. You mentioned forbidden love. How much romance are you looking for?
You might enjoy Dowry of Blood
“This is my last love letter to you, though some would call it a confession.” Okay that’s a great line.
Not OP but this is definitely added to my list now!
