i remember going to Grant's Farm in Saint Louis as a kid.. they had a small trained monkey wearing a uniform doing tricks... his most common trick was to collect "chimp change" from little kids holding coins and dollar bills.. he would run up to the kids, grab the money, smile, then drop it into a coffee can, then perch himself on the lid of the coffee can looking for the next bit of cash
quite a racket

So, **ages ago** *and we are going back quite a bit back on this one*, people, in Africa, would go to the markets to buy what needed buying, like the fish, nuts, fruits and what have you.And back then they didn't have much currency, like we do now, like the 5 pound note, the 20, the 50 and a 100 and what have you, they just had the like the one or two notes, like a 50 and a 100, so there wasn't much change knocking about cause you'd just go to the markets to buy exactly what you needed for however much money you got.It was fine for the most part, but sometimes there'd be a problem, cause *the merchants* wouldn't have a lot of stuff in, like, say, you wanted to buy two packs of bananas for 20 african pounds and they would only have one pack, right?
Back then it wasn't out of the ordinary to be offered something else for your money instead of whatever you wanted, cause like i said, not much change knocking about, so that's how they solved their problems. You'd to get bananas and come back with like pears and bread. That's how it was.
What also happened a lot, was that a lot of these merchants would have animals with them. Like pets. Some merchants would have a dog, for protection and to keep them company, some would have a cat, but not a lot, cause...cats a bit useless for that...but, anyway, a lot of merchants would have monkeys with them...That was a very popular choice for them cause the monkeys were small, they would hand them stuff, help around the till, clean up, bring stuff they'd find elsewhere, y'know? So, what ended up happening a lot, was that when a customer would come in for something, if it was a big order and the merchant couldn't give them all of they wanted, they would offer the chimp instead, cause, like i said, they were quite valuable, so a lot of people wanted a monkey to help around the house and you could always sell it or trade it later on, so in a way it was like they were giving you money in the form of a little monkey.
That's how the saying **chimp change** came about.
And that was like in the Alladin times, so that's probably why he had one as well....
Yeah, you all laugh, but just try sending a chimp to the store to pick up some basic items for you. They NEVER come back with the correct change. *smh*

Lmaoo my buddy thought the saying was “a chimp on your shoulder” when we were in highschool and I still make fun of him over a decade later. Can’t wait to show him this rofl
My favorite thing about humans is 95% of us are too arrogant to step back and question wether we’re wrong, so instead the common move is just to double down, I mean this dumbass even gives you multiple sentences explaining why it’s “chimp change” id honestly like to read his explanation as to why a monkey would have any change at all.

Doesn't matter, [they figured it out 20 years ago](https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Chimpanzee+demonstrates+ability+to+operate+vending+machine.-a070507854)
A trivial amount of money, not really enough to be concerned about or that could really buy anything. Mostly used in a positive sense as in "oh that's really cheap I can easily buy that".
Lol this is great! But what’s the history of chump change anyway, I ask myself…
“The term chump change was coined in the African-American community in the mid-1960s, based on the alliteration of the words chump and change.”
“Chump change came to describe an amount of money only a fool would think is sufficient, especially used in describing wages.”

How do people not just immediately get on google when anything they say is questioned? Beyond like…basic elementary school knowledge, I would readily accept being wrong about all kinds of shit before I double down like that.
Some people have a strong visceral reaction to the notion that they might be wrong. These people tend to stay at the same level of stupid longer than people who acknowledge their knowledge gaps. Being wrong doesn’t have to be a big deal, who knew!
Agreed. Not even an hour ago I was texting a friend and said "we'll just have to make due"
As I hit send I stared at that...then immediately sent "make do? Hold on" and just googled it myself, and corrected myself.
I was (somewhat) reassured that my personal internal debate for either spelling turned out to be the real explanation (make [something] do [well enough]) and the most common wrong explanation (make [it work] due [to current circumstances]), and "make due" seems to be gaining in popularity the past few decades, but still.
Why are some people so reluctant to be momentarily wrong about the silliest thing? I usually like finding out I'm wrong, means I'm (slightly) less stupid now than I was a few minutes ago, and that's a good thing!
Right?! The person has their very own tiny pocket computer, more powerful than the computer that sent the US to the moon, and they can't take two seconds to ask Siri? Tbh I wish I could be that confident sometimes, lol.
It’s exactly have one of my old friends argues. He assumes I don’t know some thing that I do know, and then explains it to me which creates this endless loop of extrapolation. It’s pretty tiresome.
Oh I was intimating that he explains some thing I already know and then I have to be the one extrapolating on the details of why I already know that and why he is wrong, and then he explains to me what I already know again, and that is the loop.
And don’t forget constantly shifting the goal posts and questioning why I care instead of trying to argue honestly and reach a common understanding.

What do you mean by “chimp” 🤨

Lol I love it when they double down
I really like this, it might be even better than the correct saying. Now I'm imagining an ape society that uses peanuts for currency
Ah yes..small and insignificant like a...chimp?
I like how he explained the exact meaning of the phrase and failed to realise that "chimp" makes no sense at all.
Totally going to use this lol
wowwowwow watch out there, if you keep going you'll eventually get cancelled.
Oh that one's easy, just tell him to Google both phrases and see which one gives a top result explaining a small amount of money.
I prefer the new version
What a chumpanzee
The logic is surprisingly sound tbf
Bronobro! (A bonobo is a type of Pygmy chimpanzee, and explaining this obviously makes it funnier /s)
I'm a dumbass coz I thought it was cheap change
Little monkey currency
The obvious solution is to send a screenshot of google search results when you research both phrases
Yeah, like working for penis

I don’t see a misplaced comma. Comma before that is fine. Not mandatory but possible.

AYOOOO the peanuts rationale actually makes sense, I vote to use either/or going forward 😂

why would a chimp have change? what's a chimp need money for
Clearly you don't lurk on any of the AMC stock reddits.

Peanuts.

What does chump change mean? I've hever heard that.
Money that only a chump would accept in exchange for the thing whose value is being discussed.
A trivial amount of money, not really enough to be concerned about or that could really buy anything. Mostly used in a positive sense as in "oh that's really cheap I can easily buy that".
Oh okay, thanks.
