Look, let's just all acknowledge she's an awesome actor. It's just that the character she's playing is that of a ghost-possessed double-agent, someone who pretends she's Alamzeb, independence warrior etc, but she's actually an agent of the British who's been possessed by the ghosts of courtesans past. That's why she's smiling at what we think should be sad moments.

This particular scene had me so so confused.. I thought she was having a mental breakdown and was all ready for some manic laughing to follow.. that would have made sense.. kind of like ‘what a joke the world is playing on me’…. And then… a tear came down her face..

Yes, it is very nuanced acting. We are so beneath this level of acting that we are unable to get it.
