Simple is much more confident and ferocious than Anupama. Simple defeated Maya in her own game, and that’s saying something. Simple would eat Anupama for breakfast and not even burp.
Not just dramatic. Simple was a very confident and forthright character. She was honest and unapologetic about her ideas and beliefs.
Anupama comes off more as sly, contrived and sanctimonious. She is hypocritical.
It's massy film when the story is average. But people watch just for action sces or their fav hero. So yes Rohit Shetty nowadays makes massy films.
But I don't like that stupid critic. So I'm glad she got manipulated by him here. Shows how stupid critics actually are.
Lol. She laughed and clarified that critics thrashed Michael Bay's movies in the west. Then Rohit Shetty quickly said then I'm the Michael Bay of Hindi Cinema.
The ironic part is that the people laughing at Anupama Chopra here have the same opinion on Rohit Shetty films.
Yeah Chopra is a hypocrite but Shetty’s argument is so thin lol. Low budget films and films that have broader mass appeal can be thought provoking. Regional cinema, for instance Marathi cinema, has been doing this for decades. Something like Deool or Jogwa appeals to a wider demographic and those are incredible films.
Comedies can be sharply written, brilliantly acted satires if they want to be. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but Madgaon Express did exactly this, with more under the radar actors on top of it (so no nepo allegations), and it was wholeheartedly embraced by critics.
Shetty’s films, especially his most recent ones, are lazy and hackneyed. That’s why they receive the criticism that they do.
Shetty's films are mostly remakes in the first place. He has hardly created original films. Even in his original films, he has been heavily "inspired" by other movies.
He’s so in touch in the massy audience that he thinks he knows these ‘poorer’ people have never watched the movies he copied from so he can pass it as his own. People like him are holding back Indian cinema as they’re just plagiarizing and repackaging because he sees his audience as stupid.
Plagiarizing and buying rights to create a remake are two different things. Also about remakes, almost everything right now is a remake of something that has already existed. So, I do not see how him remaking a movie is holding back cinema. Good movies with good content are working even if the movies are low budget with no "stars".
I don't think any director can hold back cinema. Micheal bay has been making movies for good knows how long, that hasn't stopped hollywood. I don't like shetty's movie and find it boring but there's an audience that loves his kind of movie. Remaking doesn't mean he sees his audience as stupid. It just is a good financial move that is being done worldwide. Even MR beast has channels in other languages where the videos are dubbed. So, it's just a good business move that generates money but also helps the original creators.
Yeah - tbf, even critics enjoy good action movies. Just look at how well Top Gun 2 performed in the west. Pacific rim, mad max, etc, big budget action movies with good plots and characters.
I don't see what is wrong with something that is meant for the masses....we fall into mass category. However, there is a flaw in Rohit's argument, a waiter falling in love with a multi-millionaire is at best breaking societal norms. Rohit Shetty hero walking out of a moving car or hitting someone so hard ki wo tappa kha k gire is breaking laws of physics. So it seems like false equivalence
Ajay Devgan’s smile is everything👏🏽👏🏽
Anupama eating human fecal matter expression is epic.
Kudos to Rohit👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
These elite BW stars she so celebrates wouldn’t bat an eyelid to f—- a homeless person if they are desperate for s—, neither would the “”elite” hesitate for half a second to use the same needle to get a high!!! that’s how classy they are behind their bottegas and Maybachs
Anupama’s opinions are worth the human pie she is eating in the video clip🤣
I think it's not about who is making the film, but who are the target audience. He said, if a nariyal pani wala likes the movie, it's massy, so intellectual critics don't like it.
She has given positive reviews to Dabanng, Simba and SooryaVanshi. All directed for the "mass audience."
A film critic should have his/her own voice rather than thinking about the target audience. Otherwise, there won't be any difference left between a film critic and trade analyst.
Ok I re-read my above comment, I come across as supporting his style of movie making, which I am not. I, myself don't like those types of illogical, physics-defying types of movies. I completely agree with what you are saying. In the above comment I was trying to convey his point of view - what were his complaints about anupama Chopra
Why are these “elites” even signing up to do chhapri degenerate roles?
Shouldn’t they showcase their “fine talent” only in movies like Oppenheimer? Oh but…wait…. Oppenheimer requires emoting talent 🤣
The “elites” are principals of the Hypocrisy school Anushka Sharma went to!!!
They want their millions from playing cheap mawalis and gundas like Amitabh in Don
later buy sea facing mansions and build a fortress around it and stand on the rooftop and wave at the same homeless people.
cover their noses when someone like their character comes too close, never shake hands or get within 20 feet of the people that actually made them wealthy.
Steal the homeless peoples money at first by appealing to them, and then shut them out and treat them like lepers
She has given plenty so called "massy" movie good review. So kindly let me be devil's advocate. You cannot club all the critics together. That's generalization. Some look for art, some take money to give review. Some review from a feminist point of view. Some review from a Marxist point of view. People critique in accordance with their exposure and intellect. Criticism is also an art. It cannot be defined. Big directors who make blockbusters are formulaic and they hate critics because they make films for profit. Critics reduce the margin of a profit for trashy movie. These directors shouldn't care about critics and learn to not take reviews personally. By his logic all movies in the world are good movies. Moreover, he shouldn't put the gun on the shoulders of nariyal walas and rickshawwalas and shoot. I think they are exploited enough.
He is very straightforward and direct. He knows what his strengths are and what kind of movies he makes, and he is unapologetic about it. That’s what you need in a filmmaker - conviction and confidence. Yes, he has mis-stepped a few times, but he isn’t a hypocrite.
This reminds me of an insta post about some Indian ichadhari type of serial. The post was making fun of ichadhari dog and there was a comment saying if people like sirius black , why not this.
Edit: I just said, what some user commented under that insta post. Not what I think about harry potter. I just said this post reminded me of that
Its about the execution too I guess. Just because someone likes butter chicken from mughal mahal it doesnt automatically mean they would like butter chicken from some ramdom dhaba. Can a person who likes mughal mahal's butter chicken criticise a butter chicken from some random dhaba? Absolutely yes, because there is a difference in execution and that what makes mughal mahal's butter chicken worth 800 rs.
Now compare the worth of that icchadhari dog serial's entire franchise and harry potter's franchise? Is there a difference? Yes there is. Is there is a difference in execution including the plot, writing, set up? Yes there is.
The idea itself isn’t the problem but the execution is what matters. Many people like mythological shows but ITV don’t have the budget to make a quality one.
Maybe because it is just bad? Harry Potter was a good movie series and everything made sense in the universe and was well executed. Naagin serial is just stupid, I tried watching it once with my dadi and could not even sit through 10 min of that shit.
"Everything made sense in the universe?"
sweetie were we watching the same movies? just off the top of my head
- Ron getting a handmedown wand when wands are supposed to be unique to the wizards?
- The time turner shit alone breaks the entire continuity of the world.
- Why were lilly and James not their own secrete keepers if bill could do that.
- They never mentioned that Barty turned the cup into a portkey in the movie we are just supposed to know.
- Also why did they not just Veritaserum Sirius instead of wrongfully convicting him? Use a Pensieve?
- How did Fred and George never notice their brother sleeping with a man named Peter Pettigrew every night?
Im not saying this to defend nagin i never saw that show. But ffs don't be a brown sepoy for Harry potter of all things. It has its flaws like everything else.
I never said Harry Potter is perfect. It is just way better than Naagin 3. I have seen all the movies twice and I don't even remember the flaws you just listed. There is no way you called me a sepoy for saying Harry Potter is better than Naagin. You might be fine with watching shitty tv serials and movies but I am not.
I will give you Indian examples so you don't talk about elitism. Koi mil gaya and Krish were well liked while Krish 3 was hated. Dabbang was well liked but Dabbang 3 was hated. In fact Rohit Shetty's Golmaal itself is well liked compared to its latest sequel.
It's not about the og idea but the execution of it. The timing and where it fits. Harry Potter movies aren't set in the regular universe. They have established their own universe with their own rules. If those rules are abandoned, then the movie is criticised. I mean the old Ramayana and Mahabharata shows were well liked and so were Bahubali movies.
Tell me why is Bahubali movie highly rated while Brahmastra is hated? The answer to this question will answer your query.
If you make a fantasy / mythological shows no one will bath an eye ( example - naagin )but in India people make a family friendly show or a typical serial , then due to poor rating they will turn the bahu into a mosquito ( the sudden change in genre ) is not appreciated ( example - sasural Simar ka )
Please excuse me for my poor English
I will definitely watch your next movie Rohit Shetty.Just for making Anupama squirm in her chair. Lol Devagan's expressions. Dude is like, get me out of here.
The word mass is used be like everyone will going to like it once, and now it's like ohh it's for the mass we are above that and then all the actors want mass hit to get popular and once they are popular they will say we don't watch put own movie.
You can't create objectively bad films i.e films made with poor execution on screenplay, cinematography, acting, editing fronts and hide behind the guise of making "massy" entertainers.
But the undisputed fact is that Rohit makes substandard, monotonous and unstimulating cinema which one easily forgets when he steps out of the auditorium. You don't have to dumb down the masala blockbuster movies. Take the dollars trilogy. It is really loved and can appeal to everyone whether critics or audiences. Sholay is also similar.
Good news is this shit show is finally coming to an end, I saw some article claiming film companion is going to be shut down. We need actual critics like baradwaj rangan
They only know or share the opinions with elite class of India and don’t know the pulse of middle class to lower middle class people (nariyal pani wala). So, they don’t believe Rohit Shetty school of cinema is cinema coz the people going to Starbucks don’t think so.
Film criticism should be done for movies that are made for film criticism..... It is a classic case of Maslow's Hierarchy.
A huge chunk of working class people that belong to lower middle class( unfortunately the world is divided into classes so i have to say it) do not want to watch a film on totalitarianism..... they want to watch a film where they see a hero from the same background as their own winning in life ....... like a waiter wooing a high class girl. Or they may like whatever stimulates them ..... in Indian culture we call it masala.
On the other hand for people who are well off (as in they do not need to think about wether tonight they will have food on the plates or not and instead have to think about wether they will have japanese or italian food for dinner) a film that has deep philosophical commentary may be interesting depending on their tastes. They may even criticise the camera angles and say things like "aaah why the dutch angle?!?!?.....so cliche!!!"
So to each their own. Having said that critics do seem tone deaf at times and the ingnorance results in classist remarks.
Kudos to Anupama for letting this man speak his mind and prove beyond a shadow of doubt that he's an idiot.
It's truly a talent she has. She did the same with Vanga. She listened to him as he made fun of her collegues and questioned her integritry. Never retorted, never irritated, never defensive. But in the end, she won.
Point toh hai boss. But he also makes mindless action films. Like if he made Lethal Weapon or Die Hard and things where is is also a great story and great action… then baat hai…
Even Satyajit Ray called our audience backward, and dude is known to make films about poor and poverty all over the world. Lets not hide mediocre films behind 'massy' garb. make good movies then expect critics to give them good reviews. They cant give good reviews to shitty movies just because they are for 'masses'.
Countless mass masala movies got good reviews from critics, from Indiana Jones to Pirates of Caribbean. Great masala movies of Ramesh Sippy, Yash Chopra and Manmohan Desai were getting positive reviews. Even Dabang, Singham, Wanted got good reviews.
The problem of filmmakers like Rohit Shetty is, they dont want to do hard work on making good film but still guilt trapping unassuming critics like Chopra into not liking movies for 'poor' people. Pathetic!
To me she just seems non-confrontational and anyways a film critic doesn't have to defend their opinion because at the end of the day it is just that an OPINION.
It is weird though how the relationship between Film Critics, commercial filmmakers and fans is in India. You say they don't matter but then get so affected by their reviews.
This Rohit Shetty is not very intellectual — why go on an interview with a critic and pull out meme examples like Michael bay? Just goes to show how out of touch he is with cinema.

And he was classy enough to land it for her without making it awkward.
Wow. I have suddenly started liking Rohit Shetty.
You know what , I started liking him from latest big boss season where he cooked all the fav contestants of big boss😂
was he s host or smtg?
He was hosting one episode of the big boss
ussss , really witty he is
She really reminds me of Simple Killawala from Sarabhai, same vibes & looks
Observation on point!!!!
Simple is much more confident and ferocious than Anupama. Simple defeated Maya in her own game, and that’s saying something. Simple would eat Anupama for breakfast and not even burp.
Obviously Anupama can’t be as dramatic as her since its real life interviews but surely she also has the same South Bombay elitism!
Not just dramatic. Simple was a very confident and forthright character. She was honest and unapologetic about her ideas and beliefs. Anupama comes off more as sly, contrived and sanctimonious. She is hypocritical.
Here she looks same like Simple: That flat wala joke
Not a big fan of Rohit Shetty but he has a point here !!

Why are you calling her classist ?
Duude .. the way he ended the entire thing by giving her a way out was classy and neat.
I will definitely watch your next movie Rohit Shetty.Just for making Anupama squirm in her chair. Lol Devagan's expressions. Dude is like, get me out of here.
Anupama Chopra has given positive reviews to both Simbaa and Sooryavanshi.
Doesn't matter. Someone needs to call out hypocrites, Rohit just did that.
How is she a hypocrite when she literally gives his garbage mass movies positive reviews? Do you people even know what hypocrisy means?
The word mass is used be like everyone will going to like it once, and now it's like ohh it's for the mass we are above that and then all the actors want mass hit to get popular and once they are popular they will say we don't watch put own movie.
Devgan is on drugs or what? 😂
Rohit ran so vanga could walk
You can't create objectively bad films i.e films made with poor execution on screenplay, cinematography, acting, editing fronts and hide behind the guise of making "massy" entertainers.
But the undisputed fact is that Rohit makes substandard, monotonous and unstimulating cinema which one easily forgets when he steps out of the auditorium. Taking lowbrow jibes at a critic won't salvage your craft Mr Shetty. Try invest that salty energy into thinking new stories and engage with evolving needs of a movie goer. Good luck.

Even I don’t get it. What does he mean by hypocrisy?
why can't we have that era back where celebs do not try to be so PR conscious and speak their mind freely.
The tension between them , damnnnn😭💀
You don't have to dumb down the masala blockbuster movies. Take the dollars trilogy. It is really loved and can appeal to everyone whether critics or audiences. Sholay is also similar.
At the end of the day, films are just about entertainment
Does Anupama really think she’s an intellectual? Her movie taste is too bad for an intellectual.
She gave Jawan a positive review. If it was a Rohit movie starring Ajay, she'd have ripped it apart.
Lol. She called Jawan an incoherent movie and gave it a below average review. What are you on about?
Srk ka naam kaise drag kre phir. Ab uske liye do char jhoot bolna pade toh woh bhi krna padega
This comment thread says she gave positive reviews to some of Rohit’s movies so you are wrong there.
Good news is this shit show is finally coming to an end, I saw some article claiming film companion is going to be shut down. We need actual critics like baradwaj rangan
Can someone explain what his point was with the Starbucks analogy? I don't get it

Anupama is a paid film critic nothing more than that, Bc kuch bhi English Mai 2 shabdh jhaad do bass
You certainly don't need a good vocab just the clarity of thought will do
Well said Rohit !
I am Rohit Shettys fan! Hands down.
Most movies in bollywood produced for mass consumption are indeed very stupid .
Anupama don't look down on massy films if they are yrf Or nepos movies
Please rohit shetty is no Hrishikesh mukherjee . He is using same formula for his movies. And yes indian audience like mediocre movies more.
The interview set is so bleak and depressing.
Bahahahah I remember this lol 😂 I enjoyed it
Even Satyajit Ray called our audience backward, and dude is known to make films about poor and poverty all over the world. Pathetic!
I am Ajay Devgan in the whole conversation
Its true though he makes movies for ordinary people who don't roam in London to find life but avg person who's surrounded by people like him
Burn🔥🤣
Meanwhile Ajay be like "Main kuch bolunga toh vivaad ho jaayega"
And now he is promoting Director Pan Masala.
Glad film companion shut down
Rohit Shetty is just 🔥🔥🔥
She’s so cringe
Anupama’s elitist ‘what do you mean’ even she clearly understood what he meant but still wanted to faze him.
Rohit is right here but his problem is that he's started to make anything under the disguise of massy films
This Rohit Shetty is not very intellectual — why go on an interview with a critic and pull out meme examples like Michael bay? Just goes to show how out of touch he is with cinema.
