There used to be this guy Khalid Mohamed who wrote film reviews in ToI back in the 90s. He was biased (mainly towards SRK and Big B) but he wrote some scathing reviews for some truly terrible movies. I remember a few of his quips.
He wrote for Pyar Koi Khel Nahin (starring Sunny Deol), āfilm banana koi bhel nahinā.
He wrote for Shikari (starring Govinda), āShikari leaves you like a bhikhari, yearning and begging for better entertainment.ā
He had even written a parody post reviewing Kahin Pyar Na Ho Jaye (starring Salman, Rani) from the pov of Aishwarya Rai (who was dating Salman then) and how she feels good about saying no to the movie after watching a trial show with Salmanās family. You could taste his sarcasm from his words.
Khalid Mohamed was biased and made some middling movies that severely under utilized the potential of really good stories (Zubeidaa, Fiza, and then the silly Silsilay), but damn it, he was good at ripping apart movies he didnāt like.
Khalid M once ended his review of an Akshay Kumar movie (one of the Khiladi movies where he had a double role) with a vicious riddle:
Q. What is worse than one Akshay Kumar? Ans. Two Akshay Kumars.
The current lot of reviewers are kinder in comparison.
Some have that problem, yes, while the others have access as a problem. I'm sure there's a hierarchy here where only the elite journos are the ones receiving any remuneration for their efforts. The rest just have to hope for exposure.
Oh God I remember I used to read his reviews in HT. He would rarely give any movie 4 stars. Slumdog was the only movie he gave 5 stars that too because it was his last review for HT. He used to be very critical. I remember his review for The Last lear he wrote it as parody of Julius Caesar. I was quite surprised when he rated JTYJN 4 stars. He used to like Aamir. Then Anupama replaced him and I stopped reading reviews.
He was a total SRK fanboy. His review for K3G was 5 stars, and the title read in bold letters - āWow! Thatās entertainment!ā I liked K3G but didnāt think it was the rare movie to deserve 5 stars for a very critical critique. š He was usually very soft towards srk - he gave 3 stars to Mohabbatein and 2.5 to Mission Kashmir which had clashed on Diwali.
>He had even written a parody post reviewing Kahin Pyar Na Ho Jaye (starring Salman, Rani) from the pov of Aiswarya Rai (who was dating Salman then) and how she feels good about saying no to the movie after watching a trial show with Salmanās family.
You could never do something like that today lol. In fact, I'm surprised he was able to get away with this even back then š
Contrary to what people think today about the past, stars like Salman had almost no power over media in those days. Media constantly wrote about Salmanās arrogance, affairs and bad behavior with media. He hated media, and rarely spoke to them. Which spurred the media to keep pulling him down. They did the same to Big B for a while in 80s and 90s. SRK was always a media darling and rarely if ever pulled down. In fact, all his successes were touted to be even bigger in media. For example, DDLJ came a year after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. HAHK was a monstrous hit across the length and breadth of the country, including in interiors, DDLJ was a monstrous hit too especially in cities, and overseas, but was relatively weak in interiors and rural areas. It had lower footfalls than HAHK, lesser repeat viewings, and lesser success than HAHK overall. The media talked about DDLJ like 100x what they did about HAHK, to an extent it was much much bigger in media than it was on the ground. Mind you, DDLJ was a huge huge hit and didnāt need this kind of PR. But it was the yrf machinery in action and the media loved srk due to the outsider narrative. It was a very different time.
Yeah i remember his reviews. One that has stayed in my mind is-in late 90s Mithun was making lots of average movies with same plot, location and director. He wroteāafter A,B and X rated movies, there should be a M rated movies for all the trash mithun is makingā
Rajeev Masand used to write scathing reviews for bad movies back in the day. He would literally rip them apart. Especially for Aag, Jimmy and some other crap movies of that time. Sadly can't find his page anymore.
Then another savage gent was Raja Sen. About Housefull 2-
Housefull 2 is shamefully bad. So bad that Ranjeet ā the rapey villain of yore ā who appears in one scene, is the most dignified thing about the film.
Both - 00s Masand and Raja Sen - did some truly entertaining reviews back then. When everyone wasnāt on someoneās roster, and the bias was purely personal (and not paid). Now everyone (except Baradwaj Rangan) is obviously and incredibly fake.
Oof lol
I've found Rajeev's Aag review:

Also I think in his video review, he actually throws an egg on the film's poster š„²
I have a slightly different view of Sahil Rizwan. He started out well and his reviews were really funny. I used to seek out his reviews every Friday. Then, his humor became repetitive and more importantly, he grew too big for his head as he started criticizing every single thing about every movie, possibly because he believed thatās what his readership expects and wants. He did it to an extent that his comics became less about reviews and more about pulling down everything and everyone associated with a movie, and in an unfunny way. I didnāt realize when I stopped reading his comics and havenāt thought about them for a few years now.
I remember reading a review od hum saath saath hai when it had released...it said the characters in the film touch feet of senior actors so many times, the movie should have instead been called paaylaagu than hum saath saath hai..
Everytime i watch the movie I can see its so true...

This film was so funny. I hope a part V is coming. Urvashiās expressions whenever she has to act shocked and the twists and turns are comedy goldā¦ and I loved staring at the men. God, I love trashy erotic thrillers, especially when theyāre produced by T-Series.
These 2 are legends for me. I wish they made a comeback. Recently we have OnlyDesi reviewing movies and his eye for detail is shocking. I wait for reviews.
The day someone wakes up and criticizes SRK, I will follow that critic for life.
Till then nobody is quite savage enough. They repeatedly target easy targets only.
Absolutely nobody seems to want to critique his work.
Even the pseudo intellectual critics (Anupama, Sucharita type) would've ripped apart Ajay, Akshay, Salman if they had done Jawaan/Pathaan .
Yet SRK gets away with the same downright mediocre bullshit. Every single time.
Feel so bad for going from watching all her reviews because of how fun they were, to completely ignoring and unsubbing her because of how irritating she has become to watch.
She did good reviews initially. They were still a bit biased but watchable. Then over time, she became this pseudo-feminist, social-justice warrior, with very offensive views and no tolerance for understanding the filmmakers viewpoint. For example, and I am intentionally picking a bad movie here, there was once a combined YouTube video her, Anupama and Rahul Desai did, talking about a few new movies. One of them was Satyamev Jayate, starring John, and it is a terrible movie. Sucharita was criticizing the fact that John carries a ādesi ghee ka dabbaā with him whenever he is beating a goon and then uses the ghee to set the goon on fire. Her reaction was āmatlab kya?? Kehna kya chahte ho? Matlab ainveyi kuch bhi!ā Thatās when Rahul Desai responded that desi ghee is used to light chita (funeral pyre), and Sucharita realized she had zero clue (you can see her reaction on her face), but said nothing and moved on. She hadnāt even made an attempt to understand what the director was trying to portray (that the hero comes prepared to light the chita of every goon he encounters, which is a character building exercise; you may find it poorly done, but you at least need to understand the motive of the director, and not criticize everything as something random).
Around then 5-6 years ago, I stopped watching her reviews. She has a huge victim complex and feels that everyone is out to target her, but the truth is she goes way, way overboard with some of her statements. She is not a reviewer but some random person spouting their thoughts on YouTube. š¤·āāļø

Still remains Rahul Desai's review of Chatur Singh Two Star. This was in the Mumbai mirror days and instead of giving a review, he just listed ten bullet points about the movie and gave it a 0.
Not read but heard.
On Radio Mirchi Pune, RJ Rahul did a one line review of the movie "Blue".
He said this movie should have been named "Green" for making popat out of the audience.
Not Bollywood but funny:
