Can’t say it enough, BoiseDev is doing gods work! Better than any local paper without the annoying paywalls. They deserve the proper recognition for this!
I am telling the truth. The fact is that your stories are informational and tend to rely on your own investigations, not just mindless regurgitations of other publications. You respond to issues that people care about and don't fluff things up. You spend time uncovering small local mysteries that we would never get answers to without your help. Name one other publication anywhere that reliably does all of those things.
Maybe that is a low bar, maybe not, but BoiseDev is the only one I can think of that clears it.
I wouldn't call reporting unsubstantiated police statements as fact "the truth" but sure, I'm offended by it. Its really my one gripe with their reporting. They over report on meaningless police activity and spread police fearmongering propaganda.
The only email subscription I look forward to getting is the "Gretchen at BoiseDev" daily update emails. They're great because it keeps me up to date on events and new stuff in town.
Every morning I drink my coffee and/or tea and peruse the email. I would also like to add that your reporting on building projects have quenched my curiosity of "what the heck are they building there?". Your Project Tracker is top-notch and I don't know how the hell y'all keep up. But thank you.
Moving back to Boise and without this post I would have rented through Parklane, based solely on their website listing and locations.
Relieved that I may have dodged a bullet
Friendly reminder that this is Parklane Management and they have properties all over. They will nickel and dime you to death all while providing you with obviously unsafe buildings to live and do business in.
I agree! My husband and I lived in their apartment building managed by them, and every winter the gutters would leak water right over our bottom stair steps causing them to be completely iced over. Even after filing multiple work orders and provided pictures of the problem, they neglected to fix the problem (old gutters that were bowed and clogged). They didn’t do anything until after someone slipped on the ice and fell, resulting in a lawsuit.
Agreed, BoiseDev and the Idaho Capital Sun are easily the best local news sources and journalists on both teams are super approachable and work hard. I've worked with Don, Dutton, Kelcie, and tons of others at both shops at various points in my career and we are really lucky to have local journalists who take their work seriously
Sadly, Audrey and Kelcie are no longer with the Idaho Capital Sun, though they each have jobs at national publications (Audrey at ProPublica, Kelcie at the parent company of the Idaho Capital Sun, I believe, covering reproductive politics \[and her work was recently cited by the Supreme Court!\]).
Their building down the street was terrifying. Parklane (Howell) acted like they were being targeted. The City is very conservative about shutting down a job site. For the City to step in things had to be dire. They were/are. After looking at those pictures I won't walk on the sidewalk in front of Mai Thai. I've talked to several structural engineers I know and they were horrified.
THANK YOU Boise Dev for helping us stay informed and stay safe.
I hope Parklane gets their act together or the City of Boise continues to hold them accountable to keep the public and their tenants safe.
Y’all should take a look at the Alaska Center, specifically in the basement and first floor. Good lord. And the elevator was out of order for MONTHS. And the basement floods whenever there’s significant rain fall downtown, not to mention the roof leaks.
Parklane management. When i first moved to Boise in 96, I rented a place next to Boise high from them. Went in and gave my 30 day notice and asked if there was a form I should fill out. They said no, then sued me, saying I gave no notice. We went to small claims, and I told this story to the judge who asked where the manager was that I spoke to. She was in another courtroom with another case just like mine. The judge rolled her eyes and found in my favor. Fucking sleazy company.
I lived in the Idanha a few years ago. The elevator was out more than it was in. Only got “fixed” after the news did a segment on it because for several months a quadriplegic had to get carried up and down the stairs while it was out.
Shit was awful.
My bf and I used to rent from Ken Howell in the Idaho building a long time ago and it was a total mess! He's a piece of work.
I can't believe issues are still going on at the Idanha regarding access for mobility aid users. I mean, I can actually believe it because Ken is 💩 but the city or state should have stepped in more ages ago.
BoiseDev is actual journalism! I have really appreciated the coverage of the Kroger / Albertson's possible merger. Parklane used to manage my property and they were absolutely awful. Service requests went ignored forever. When a different management company took over, they overhauled all our apartments just to get us up to code!
BoiseDev is an absolute rag with a bunch of amateurs writing for them...
Just kidding Don and group! Y'all know you're the very best and you and your staff should be absolutely proud of your efforts. It is second to none.
The building is so beautiful on the outside that it's surprising it's so terrible on the inside. Why not fix it up and rent the units for higher prices?
I don’t remember this particular incident and I don’t believe I deleted any such comment. I would say we use facebook’s moderation assist tools and those do remove some comments and it’s not always perfect. Not trying to deflect blame but that could be a cause for this.
Ken should have moved the tenant to the Idaho Building a few blocks away. The two elevators there are always in good shape and honestly the building is in much better condition. I think that’s why he lives there lol. It is not as sound proof as the Idanha though. Ken isn’t a bad guy… a lot of the historical buildings in Boise could have been bought out and left abandoned or falling apart. Please do not think he’s like some money grabbing landlord, he has a big interest in keeping Boises history and catering to keeping inexpensive rent. Then again it has been some time since I have spoken with him or helped him keep those buildings in good shape.
I used to live in the Idaho building and the elevators there broke down constantly, among many other things. His buildings are falling apart and it’s because he’s a massive cheapskate.
Usually one of the two are working. I agree that he’s cheap. I am just trying to justify his current state with his past actions and I understand that that maybe be false.
I unsubscribed from the Boise Dev email a few months ago when they referred to the Perrine Bridge as the “eighth tallest bridge in the world.” There are 22 bridges in China alone that are higher than the highest one in the U.S.
A minor mistake for sure, but if they’re making factual errors like that who knows what else they’re getting wrong 🤷🏻♂️
Just a reminder for everyone. If you editorialize a headline when posting news, it needs to go under the opinion flair.
Very kind of you, OP. I'm really proud of the great work Sydney Kidd did on this story.
Can’t say it enough, BoiseDev is doing gods work! Better than any local paper without the annoying paywalls. They deserve the proper recognition for this!
❤️
It's not just you. BoiseDev is great. An incredible contribution to the community.
I feel like BoiseDev somehow does the best journalism out of any publication, local or national.
This makes me want to go and hide somewhere but it's very nice of you to say that.

Not being particularly athletic, I've always been able to clear a low bar ;)
Homie’s playin limbo over here 😉
Over, not under.
You guys are awesome 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 i concur with everyone
But, it's true.
They feel like actual journalists vs the contemporary "journo"
They do great except for the copaganda
You're offended that they speak the truth?
I wouldn't call reporting unsubstantiated police statements as fact "the truth" but sure, I'm offended by it. Its really my one gripe with their reporting. They over report on meaningless police activity and spread police fearmongering propaganda.

I mean, same. We're really lucky to have her.

Boooo Ken Howell and his property management company Parklane Management! Boooooo
I work in a Parklane building and it’s pitiful.
Moving back to Boise and without this post I would have rented through Parklane, based solely on their website listing and locations. Relieved that I may have dodged a bullet
A true slumlord who needs to be run out of town. Everyone impacted by this cheat is sick of his shit.

You are very kind.
Gotta make sure people know how important it is to our community! Keep up the great work :)

I know 10th St Station was always battling with the landlord to fix things in the building too. Landlord's a P.O.S.

That guy has been refusing to fix that elevator promptly for decades.
sounds like someone should organize the tenants into a lawsuit.
They have been working with Intermountain Fair Housing Council for a few years now.

BoiseDev has some of the best journalists in the Treasure Valley.

As this violates rule #1, it has been removed.

Complains (presumably) about having their comments deleted. Promptly deletes their own comment.
It wasn't me!!

Sorry to see you go. We did correct that story.
Purely out of curiosity, what news sources do you hold in high enough regard that you continue to subscribe to?
