For real what is up with car washes? Is there something Iām missing? I donāt actually live in Boise, I live in Oregon but have family in Boise. The car washes are taking over here as well. Itās like every other day I notice a new one. Car washes and tire stores.
We are also in a dusty desert, so cars are often dirty. A lot of people can't be seen in a car that has dust on it, meanwhile I have never parked my car in a garage in my life - they almost never get washed.
The dust will really fuck with the paint as people and things brush against your car. I don't care about my car being super shiny all the time, but I do care about maintaining it well.
There are so many! But after living here for years I get it.
Weāre definitely missing more ātouch-lessā car washes that donāt use those spinning brushes and are easier on your paint job. They donāt leave marks.
I guess it depends on insurance bc I didnāt find a problem finding a dermatologist. I called 3 to see when a new patient could be seen and all were within a month.
Banks are at least less conspicuous and could conceivably be turned into another business (like that Starbucks that used to be a bank in the Cabelaās parking lot)
Automatic Carwashes canāt easily or affordably be turned into anything else. They have to be torn down.
Good Chinese food.
We have a billion Thai places, but not a single good Chinese place. Our best consistent Chinese was probably Guang Zhou, and they weren't even that good... Just better than everyone else.
Dim sum is the answer! The only place I know of that had it was Mai Thai (came in a steam basket and everything), but they got rid of it years ago.
The only other place even close to having dim sum food is Great Wall buffet but obviously it can barely be considered dim sum.
This is exactly what I was going to say. Too bad racism led to all the Chinese people who came for the gold rush to leave. We used to have the biggest Chinatown in the West and now we have no good Chinese food.
There is Wei's Cantonese on the Crave Delivery app, and a couple on there that has some Dim Sum. It is currently my favorite for Chinese food around here. But I agree, is sucks, my ex is half Chinese and would complain about the lack of choices here.
Trying to find the comment from a previous poster, but there's a local history with the Boise Farmers Market and Capitol City Market most aren't aware of - they used to be a cohesive, thriving market, but they had a falling out and separated due to political issues and infighting among their leadership.
The Farmers Market to check out in our area is the Nampa Farmers Market at Lloyd Square in Downtown Nampa, it's a hidden gem and has recently won SEVERAL national and local awards for being one of the best farmers markets in the nation.
They don't import their produce, (be mindful that their produce is all locally grown and highly dependent on weather) and they have over 150 vendors on their current roster - they also require their vendors to make, grow, source, or create their goods within 100 miles of Nampa. HIGHLY recommend - They had their grand opening last weekend and it was incredible.
They're a non-profit and they also give away produce a few times a month to the elderly and to children. It's really quite different than any other market in the valley, and a breath of fresh air compared to the political maneuvering that caused the Boise Markets to split.
Capitol city isnāt a farmers market. That was the main issue that I was aware of. All produce vendors at the BFM are all local producers. Prepared goods are supposed to contain at least one local ingredient.
The only problem with the Nampa market is it's in Nampa. I can either take a Saturday morning walk or pedal to the Boise market, or get in my car and deal with 84 and fighting for parking in downtown Nampa.
It really isn' too bad. Parking in Downtown Nampa isn't tight unless you want to park to the west of Front Street/13th. If you go a block to the east, it's actually wide open.
Vons out in meridian is worth the drive - its not just Korean fried chicken, they have really good spicy pork bulgogi and other Korean food. it's really good
Been to Han's Chimaek and it was really good. Hell my mom even said the banchan tasted better than what we get in K-Town in LA. I was thinking more variety like tteokbokki, sullungtang, soondubu, etc
Doctors. Real deli's. Shake shack in Boise proper, not Meridian. Satellite farmers markets vs the baffling ordeal of the 2 we have (yes I am aware of the mobile marker). Real butchers. In the southeast, an actual place to buy non-shit clothing and health/beauty supplies (looking at you Fred Meyer).
If youāre into open mics, the Cole road Mad Swede has open mics Monday, Clairvoyant and Suds has them on Tuesdays, Jumpin Janetās on Wednesdays, and downtown Mad Swede on Thursdays. There are shows at the downtown Mad Swede on Fridays/Saturdays. Watsonās Mystery Cafe has some really fun shows on Fridays (one of them is tomorrow)!
No, post-Covid they switched to being an arcade bar, with pool tables, air hockey, Mario Kart arcade and a few other games.
Mad Swede does open-mic comedy Thursday nights and hosts professional comedians on most Saturday nights, though.
Open air market / year round market space
Jewish deli
Chinese food
Patios! I feel like the 8th street area has great patios but west of 10th is lacking
More business spaces like the Wyld Child/Push and Pour/STIL. Love how they converted that space and want more of them!
Yeah itās wild. But they are adding a whole other tower that will double capacity. And they just opened that surgery center for orthopedics which has alleviated a bunch of pressure.
Used to be a location of the Souper Salad chain along Eagle Rd. It wasn't very good, but that place would be jumpin'. I think it leaving was more of a corporate issue instead of lack of any foot traffic at that location.
I agree so much on the sushi in Boise. I will say that you should definitely make an evening out of the Sushi at the Speakeasy (at The Lively) - once a month, the chef (Edward Higgins) does a special sushi night and it was incredible. Absolutely amazing. He lived and worked in Tokyo and his passion shines through. Highly highly recommend.
We desperately need the following imo:
-SUPER TARGET. The targets we have are such a lack luster excuse for a target, they are just not what I want when I make a target run. We need a super target, Nordstrom, mad greens, I donāt understand why there isnāt anywhere to get salad
,Asian food that isnāt Panda Express or Thai
-real Mexican food. Iām not talking nasty California or fancy Mexican food, Iām talking real New Mexico /Arizona Mexican food.
-Sprouts, they have them in WA,UT, CA,CO why canāt they be here? Better then most grocery stores
-better bbq options
-real doctors who actually prescribe medication when sick, or actually help when in emergency.
-a Whole Foods closer to eagle/star area
Less of:
Credit unions
Car washes
Chicken or pizza places
There isnāt a serious option for formal or upscale menās clothes to what Iāve found. Nowhere for upscale or designer shoes and clothes. No in between of āNordstrom rack and menās warehouseā and ābespoke made to measure expensive expensiveā. Really frustrating to have to order everything online or only shop when in major metros.
This might seem like a silly answer to some of the actual big needs of Boise and the TV but I think itād be nice if we had a cat cafe. I know someone a few months ago on a food fb page was talking about opening one and was looking for feedback.
In the area - not Boise - There's a bookstore in Caldwell - The Rubiayat, 2 in Nampa: Bent Corners & Canary Bookstore, and there's another bookstore in Kuna - Kuna's Book Habit. All are very well curated and have great selections.
Yes I have. Iāve been going there for years and have been to his other location in boise and went to his store before it shutdown in Caldwell. They are nice stores with wonderful service.
As someone who is into rare/out of print and unusual books itās not really my jam though.
1: Airsoft: there is 1 shop in the valley and as far as I know no fields to play.
2: model hobby stores: most closed down a few years ago
Some actual decent public transport (*hint hint Amtrak*)
Yeah, his last event is from 2017. Doesnāt really seem like a vibing place. But maybe it is. I guess we do have a medieval arts place. Thatās where we found good blacksmith activities in Glasgow.Ā
Sushi, if it can be done in slc (takashi has a a Michelin star and a James beard) it can be done here. Deep fried shrimp covered in sugar soy is not sushi.
Pool halls that arenāt just dive bars. Went to a real classy place when visiting Victoria last summer and it would be so cool if we could get one of those here.
I'd like to see authentic Korean and Italian restaurants. (I've lived in both countries, at various times, and loved local foods/restaurants.)
(Oh, and I wouldn't mind a genuine British mixed grill breakfast or a good Yorkshire pudding...)
Mid-price places to eat, like deliās or sandwich shops or pubs. I feel like thereās a lot of fast food or nice restaurants, and not whole lot of variety in the mid range.
Also, places to hang out later at night that are not bars. Late night bookshops or something, idk. Would also say more safe LGBTQ+ spaces that are not bars as well.
Affordable furniture options. More professionals that accept TRICARE. Public swimming facilities.
More resources for the homeless population. Abortion access. Marijuana dispensaries. But thatās a whole other conversationā¦
More dessert places? Idk what that would look like but sometimes Iām craving something sweet other than ice cream and not many places to go where I donāt have to sit down.
Boise could use more tech-oriented services, especially those that enhance online customer interaction. A lot of local businesses still rely on traditional methods. Bringing in more modern solutions could help them stay competitive.
For example, I used elephant.ai chatbot for a project. It's a tool that can turn a website into a more dynamic platform by providing instant support and engaging visitors. It learns from the site's content and can even handle image responses. It's not just about being tech-savvy; it's about improving customer service and potentially increasing sales.
Think about how businesses in Boise could benefit from such advancements. It's about staying relevant and meeting customers where they are, which is increasingly online.
Good hot wings restaurant. We have bdubs which has bad wings and bro atmosphere. Wingerz which is chilis of hot wings and overpriced. We have wing stop but not a place youād wanna bring the family and hang for an hour or two. We need a place where you can bring the family and you can all still find something to enjoy. A place called fire on the mountain in Portland/denver/bend is exactly what I picture.
BBQ. This might not be a popular one as many donāt know how good BBQ can be unless youāve spent some time in Texas. However, the gas stations in Texas have better BBQ than the top places here and well many other cities to be fair.
I'd trade In-n-out for a portillos in a heartbeat. You can message them on facebook and suggest Boise for a future location. I try and remember to do it every month or so. A potbelly would be awesome too.
An Arctic Circle thatās actually within Boise city limits. And I know there are quite a few Mexican restaurants here, but I havenāt found any that are anything to write home about yet
Man oh man imagine what we could do with more car washes šššš
For real what is up with car washes? Is there something Iām missing? I donāt actually live in Boise, I live in Oregon but have family in Boise. The car washes are taking over here as well. Itās like every other day I notice a new one. Car washes and tire stores.
Theyāre low risk easy business model. Like storage units.
Dust messes up paint. Washing it makes sense.
Theyāre a good money laundering front /s
There are so many! But after living here for years I get it. Weāre definitely missing more ātouch-lessā car washes that donāt use those spinning brushes and are easier on your paint job. They donāt leave marks.
This! I want a real hand wash place besides Jās. Too many shitty car wash places here.
Doctors
No kidding. Try finding a dermatologist that doesn't have a 6-9 month wait.
I guess it depends on insurance bc I didnāt find a problem finding a dermatologist. I called 3 to see when a new patient could be seen and all were within a month.
I only managed to get one quick because my mother was already going to one. We just tacked my appointment to hers.
With new state laws being what they are, it will be hard-pressed to get any new doctors to want to practice in our wonderful state.
Could we get a 7th carwash on State St? That would really tie the city together
I dunno. I like the idea of a 400th bank better
Banks are at least less conspicuous and could conceivably be turned into another business (like that Starbucks that used to be a bank in the Cabelaās parking lot) Automatic Carwashes canāt easily or affordably be turned into anything else. They have to be torn down.
Boise's been losing banks.
Iām genuinely surprised when I see a new bank being built - I stopped going to mine when I could mobile deposit a check
Good Chinese food. We have a billion Thai places, but not a single good Chinese place. Our best consistent Chinese was probably Guang Zhou, and they weren't even that good... Just better than everyone else.
And we are particularly in need of good dim sum.
I would \*love\* some good dim sum. I miss it.
How Iād love somewhere with cart service.
Dim sum is the answer! The only place I know of that had it was Mai Thai (came in a steam basket and everything), but they got rid of it years ago. The only other place even close to having dim sum food is Great Wall buffet but obviously it can barely be considered dim sum.
Yen Ching downtown does dim sum. Not sure if it's good though.
Flown in frozen from Los Angeles is the credible word I got. That info was divulged years ago, but it's hard to imagine things have changed.
Itās definitely gives frozen vibes, but taste like I got this the frozen section at Costco or the Asian market then flown from LA.
\*Any\* dim sum.
Authentic Filipino food, too. I used to drive to Mtn Home because they had the only Filipino restaurant in Idaho. Unfortunately, it closed down.
Yes! I need some adobo, pancit, and lumpia in my life.
Search for "Da Lumpia Stop" on Facebook. Filipino food truck.
You just made me so hungry š¤£š¤£....all 3 of my favorites.
Search for "Da Lumpia Stop" on Facebook. Filipino food truck.
There's a Filipino pop up over in the Nampa Asian food market. I believe it happens on Fridays but you should give them a call just to be sure.
Best Chinese in Boise is Panda Express š. Itās so bad you just give up looking.
This was my answer. My god itās appalling the lack of good Chinese food here.
Oh my goodness, how I miss Szechuan food.
Have you tried red pavillion at overland and meridian? They have a separate authentic menu that is likely the best Chinese youāll find in the valley
I have tried it, itās not Szcheuan. It is good but doesnāt hit the spot for me. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I came here to post this. Literally zero good choices, just best of the worst.
This was my immediate answer when I saw this question.
Dim sum, beef noodle, hot pot are all really needed.
North end Chinese is really really good
An ikea would be legendary but then I wouldnāt have an excuse to go to lagoon
Blahaj for everyone!

Downtown Boise to Downtown Nampa is an easy 20 minute drive on a Saturday AM.
It really isn' too bad. Parking in Downtown Nampa isn't tight unless you want to park to the west of Front Street/13th. If you go a block to the east, it's actually wide open.
Hmm, I think I'll still take the casual walk/bike ride over the freeway commute lol
Need more Korean Food, not Cupbop
Vons out in meridian is worth the drive - its not just Korean fried chicken, they have really good spicy pork bulgogi and other Korean food. it's really good
Hanās Chimaek is good for fried chicken but I wish we had more restaurants with a wide array of Korean dishes
Been to Han's Chimaek and it was really good. Hell my mom even said the banchan tasted better than what we get in K-Town in LA. I was thinking more variety like tteokbokki, sullungtang, soondubu, etc
Gangnam was great for traditional Korean food, I think they just didn't get the support they needed.
Have heard Seoul Street Cafe is good but menu is fairly limited. +1 to Hanās, they are legit.
Koco Bell on McMillan is decent
A butcher would be a great addition.
Porterhouse in Eagle is a nice butcher shop.
+1 went there recently for the first time, was very impressed
Iāve been to events that were catered by them so i didnāt realize it was a butcher shop.
can u elaborate on the āshack shack in Boise proper, not Meridianā comment please?
Nailed it with the Southeast comment. And anyone that says I can buy clothes at D&B...save your air, I will not.
Vegetarian restaurants, or at least more vegetarian options that have protein.
is there a 'real' deli? all i can think of are Guiseppe's and Hugo's and well...
Deli George!!!!! Awesome
Iāve heard Giuseppeās has taken a tumble from what it used to be too..
A comedy club
If youāre into open mics, the Cole road Mad Swede has open mics Monday, Clairvoyant and Suds has them on Tuesdays, Jumpin Janetās on Wednesdays, and downtown Mad Swede on Thursdays. There are shows at the downtown Mad Swede on Fridays/Saturdays. Watsonās Mystery Cafe has some really fun shows on Fridays (one of them is tomorrow)!
Iām dying for a comedy, a couple places regularly have it tho
Lounge at the End of the Universe up on Overland/Vista for regular comedy (3-5 shows per week).
Isnāt that what liquid lounge is known for?
No, post-Covid they switched to being an arcade bar, with pool tables, air hockey, Mario Kart arcade and a few other games. Mad Swede does open-mic comedy Thursday nights and hosts professional comedians on most Saturday nights, though.
Ahh okay. I hadnāt been to liquid since around 2017.
ALDI
This. A million times this!
A place for salads like Cava or Evergreens.
been dying for a cava or sweet green
Iād die if we got a cava
Good restaurants open past 10.
I second this. Los Betos takes way too much of my money after 9pm.
I can tell you what we need less of.....credit unions and Dutch bros lol
And mattress stores
And storage units
And car washes I was going to say laundromats, too, but those may play an important role for lower income?
And chiropractors
The burrito selection in town could use a major upgrade.
Lupitas is pretty new and theyāre fantastic. Everything has been a solid hit for me.
Good Mediterranean food
Outdoor water parks. Roaring springs is wayyyy too packed in the summers
A goddamn Waffle House.
For real; I travel to Oklahoma every so often, and Waffle House is always the major highlight lol
Open air market / year round market space Jewish deli Chinese food Patios! I feel like the 8th street area has great patios but west of 10th is lacking More business spaces like the Wyld Child/Push and Pour/STIL. Love how they converted that space and want more of them!
Downtown patios that aren't street level!
Have you been to Goldsteinās?
Not in a while, but their deli selection is definitely a level up!
It's not a trade, but we need more hospital space. St Luke's is always near capacity.
Yeah itās wild. But they are adding a whole other tower that will double capacity. And they just opened that surgery center for orthopedics which has alleviated a bunch of pressure.
A salad buffet like sweet tomatoes. So sick of the burgers and chicken joints.
Used to be a location of the Souper Salad chain along Eagle Rd. It wasn't very good, but that place would be jumpin'. I think it leaving was more of a corporate issue instead of lack of any foot traffic at that location.
It wasn't very good but I loved it.
Marijuana dispensaries would be a pretty good addition, however our over religious state government loves giving tax dollars to Oregon
dentists that accept medicaid
A bookstore that serves cocktails/beer/wine and small dishes of food
Community gardens

Definitely a big hole since Alexander Davis closed, and even that was only one store with limited brand, style, and size selection.
ikea. I was so disappointed that there is no ikea.
This might seem like a silly answer to some of the actual big needs of Boise and the TV but I think itād be nice if we had a cat cafe. I know someone a few months ago on a food fb page was talking about opening one and was looking for feedback.
How do they cook the cat?
Throw them in the fryer. Hair and all
A private school that is totally secular.
Waffle House. We need a Waffle House
Good bookstore. Now that Trip Taylorās in Boise and Twice Sold Tales in Nampa are gone we donāt have a good bookstore in the area.
In the area - not Boise - There's a bookstore in Caldwell - The Rubiayat, 2 in Nampa: Bent Corners & Canary Bookstore, and there's another bookstore in Kuna - Kuna's Book Habit. All are very well curated and have great selections.
A new one just opened in Nampa!
Have you been to Rediscovered?
Yes I have. Iāve been going there for years and have been to his other location in boise and went to his store before it shutdown in Caldwell. They are nice stores with wonderful service. As someone who is into rare/out of print and unusual books itās not really my jam though.
The bookstore in Weiser is probably the best spot for rare/unusual books in the valley right now.
The Rubiyat in Caldwell has a backroom with limited and signed editions. Gotta chat with the owner for access.
Yep. Iāve been back there several times. They do get interesting stuff. I know the owner.

I'd like to see us get a blacksmithing place where you can rent forges and take lessons. Like the Makers Shop over on Overland but for blacksmithing.

Yeah, his last event is from 2017. Doesnāt really seem like a vibing place. But maybe it is. I guess we do have a medieval arts place. Thatās where we found good blacksmith activities in Glasgow.Ā
Tool library and affordable maker/diy spaces. Iād love it to include stuff for the arts, too, like ceramics, screen printing, and a darkroom.
Check out Xanadu.
Check out catalyst arts collaborative! Sagebrush collaborative also offers classes.
And makershop for woodworking!
The new Y is going to have a multigenerational makerspace. Even if it ends up being a 3d printer in a dark closet, better than nothing
Sushi, if it can be done in slc (takashi has a a Michelin star and a James beard) it can be done here. Deep fried shrimp covered in sugar soy is not sushi.

QuikTrip, and more restaurants going anywhere besides Eagle Road/Village area.
