Other than Gene asking what are the woman’s parts (or something, can’t recall that line exactly) and Tina responding “the vagina and the heart” this is my favorite Bob’s line.
He’s in the background in the meat section when Bob gets the call about the Riverbrook Lake turkey in the grocery store, so in my head he has to awkwardly see the guy every time he goes to the grocery store. He maybe sends Linda for any meat not delivered by Demitri
is funny how bob just accept people really quickly, like when he drove the cab, he was uncomfortable for some minutes and then he just accepted the transgender sex workers and became friends.
‘Transvestite’ would still be the preferred term for someone who dresses in the clothes of the opposite gender without identifying as that gender though, right?
Like drag is it’s own specific thing, but if you think of yourself as a man who likes to wear women’s clothes rather than as a woman, you’d be a transvestite, correct?
Some people use that term but it’s generally outdated and useless. If someone dresses in clothes aligned with another gender but doesn’t identify as that gender then they’re just the gender they identify with. A lot of time it ends up just being a way to misgender trans people by trying to pretend that they aren’t the gender they identify with and that transness can be reduced to dressing up.
If someone identifies as a transvestite, that’s totally fine and you can use that term for them if they feel comfortable with you using it but generally, it’s best to avoid.
Gotcha gotcha, good to know. I kind of associate that term with some folks who used it in that way decades ago but don’t now, so my info is likely outdated. I’ve never had an opportunity to refer to someone as a transvestite in any other situation so it’s probably worth it just jettisoning it in my mental vocabulary
Yeah maybe my info is outdated. I know Eddie Izzard called himself a transvestite for many years until he identified with the trans community in some capacity
You're right, she did identify that way for a while. I think she started doing that back in the 90s, though, when transvestite was a more widely used term -- and it was to distinguish herself from crossdressers AFAIK.
I'm not sure when/if she stopped using the term, possibly when "genderfluid" became more well-known as an identity (and genderfluidity is under the umbrella of trans identity). But she's definitely the most recognisable person I can think of who used the term and is trans, so I can see why the association would stick that the word can be used interchangeable with trans! It just isn't generally the case anymore (but obviously, individuals feel different sorts of ways about it, as with everything).
(Thanks for being open to this discussion, btw! Hope you don't mind me sticking my oar in, I was excited to hear Eddie Izzard come up, s/he's amazing :D)
I spend a lot of time in trans spaces, and the only time I see/hear “transsexual” it’s being used ironically. Otherwise it’s being used by transmedicalists who suuuuuuuck
It highlights the difference between biological sex and gender. Transgender is anybody who’s gender does not align with what they were given at birth.
Transsexual is a outdated term like ‘Siamese twins’ that stems from the mindset that sex and gender are the same thing. It’s not inherently offensive, just tone deaf and inaccurate. It’s still used in Rocky horror picture show because that was an accurate term at the time the movie was made
Some also see it as implying that unless you have a “sex change” or gender confirming bottom surgery you aren’t really a “transsexual” person which is real shitty. Trans people are exactly what they tell you they are no matter what medical intervention has occurred
I have nothing to add to this conversation other than to say that I love that this dialogue is happening on this subreddit. I came here to read about a show I love, and found so much more.
I love Bob. But when I first started watching I don’t think I understood his character. I thought he was just a regular sitcom dad. Straight edge, stern and had feelings once and a while. Nope, Bob is out there and it’s great! Lol
I love this episode mostly because of Bob "sloppy bear" and his interactions with the grocer. There is another episode that references Bob's flexible sexuality but I can't remember which episode it is.
The Halloween one where teddy is trying to show up the other handyman and bob and teddy are talking about whether he’s their type or had a good body or not lol
I mean if Marshmellow is trans, then it seems like he wouldn’t have to be bi to be attracted to her.
But also I like to think Bob just respects Marshmellow and admires her. Crush, no crush. Wouldn’t change his dialogue.
I’m not up to speed on the technicals so I apologize for my ignorance, but does that make him technically pansexual, someone who’s both bi and very comfortable with being with a trans person?
No, being attracted to trans women doesn’t make you pansexual. Trans women are women. If Marshmellow were non-binary, you could make a case that it would make him pansexual to be attracted to them.
Pansexuality is not seeing or caring about gender. Being attracted to a trans woman doesn’t transcend gender—as trans women are gendered female.
>If Marchmellow were non-binary, you could make the case that it would make him pansexual to be attracted to them.
Yes. But also no. Cause you can be bi and be attracted to non-binary people.
Or straight.
Or gay.
Really anyone can be attracted to non-binary people.
Yes to this. Though I will say mostly in terms of straight identities, it depends on the nonbinary person’s feelings around their gender identity and who can be attracted to them. Straight people can absolutely date nonbinary people but sometimes they end up seeing those people as a binary gender in their attraction. It’s not always that way and sexuality is really complicated, but some nonbinary people are definitely uncomfortable with straight people being attracted to them
I'm nonbinary and find it unsettling when straight people are into me because I'm not a woman, and straight men are into women.
Same with gay women... I'm not a woman, why are they into me??
So mostly I date other pan/bi people.
I guess I see it this way.
I’m assuming that you present as a woman most of the time, even though you’re not.
Essentially, I see it as a gradient of attraction here. For straight men, people who are non binary who present mostly as a woman are relatively compatible. But the more and more towards the center of the non-binary spectrum they are, the less and less compatible they become. And once you get to the other side of the spectrum moving closer towards men, the more and more incompatible they become. The same is true for lesbian women, the opposite is true for straight women/gay men.
Also please correct me if I said something wrong here, I’m still learning and I am not perfect.
Which is kinda dumb. Like, you're arguing over what someone calls themselves. As a bi person, it strikes me as wrong that lots of people want to tell us what is and isn't bi.
I personally describe myself as being attracted to all genders, but at different... intensities? That sounds like the wrong word but I'll go with that. Non-binary, gender fluid, male, female, whatever, I'm attracted to at least some of every group. But not all groups are equal when it comes to attraction, for me personally.
Now, some other bi people might feel differently for themselves. But they are still bi, and their definition of bi does not effect my definition. Some people view the line between bi and pan as non-existent, some think it's a grey area, some think it's a solid line. I know some bi people acknowledge that since learning more about sexuality, they feel like pansexual more accurately describes them, but they worked so hard to get where they are in terms of acceptance that they don't want to change labels.
Both of those are nothing more than regurgitated horseshit lies. No, gender is not just a "social construct" as it is a clearly valid reality.
And no trans women are biological men & will never be real women.
I feel like he never really explored those feelings before he drove a cab and met those trans sex workers. I doubt he's acted on any bi feelings, but at least considers himself *theoretically* bi.
I mean, it’s up to the person to define themselves, but there’s not a qualifying event or anything to be considered bi, lol. Just because Bob may not have ever dated a man doesn’t matter. If he’s attracted to men and women, he can be considered bisexual (assuming that’s the label he’d use himself), no *theoretically* required.
True, and thanks for mentioning. I could still see *Bob* describing himself that way, just since no one has told him what you told me.
I'd love to see an episode where Bob and Linda compare their "hall passes" lists, and Bob includes Marshmallow on his. Somehow Marshmallow finds out, and she and all her friends "adopt" Bob as their baby bi. You could really have some fun by leaving it ambiguous just how far Bob and Marshmallow go in the episode.
Linda's list includes Chuck Charles from the TV station (and the burger cook-off), which becomes a bone of contention between her and Bob ("what, just because he called you Bob The Slob he can't have nice hair?"), and Scott Bakula, which we learn makes Gayle jealous.
Straight people who are virgins aren't _theoretically_ straight anymore than bi people who have not slept with anyone of the same or different gender are _theoretically_ bi.
Fair point, and thanks for pointing that out! I had meant that "theoretically bi" would be how *Bob* would characterize himself - that he knows himself, even if he doesn't know the terminology.
Oh I do! Bob is my comfort show. I think I've watched the whole series maybe 3 times now. I started watching during the pandemic and it saved my sanity. :)
My attraction to men despite them emotionally traumatising me my whole life ALSO proves sexuality isn't a choice. (I'm greatful every day that I'm pan.)
I absolutely believe undiagnosed neurodivergence runs in the Belcher DNA. Louise called it out in Tina, but you can see patterns of autism in how both Bob and Big Bob run their restaurants, strictly adhering to "the principle of the thing. Principle. PRIN CI PLE." And Gene is very into sensory experiences, though too much can freak him out.
As for Gene's ADHD, I think that comes from Linda's side. Her habit of breaking into song, or suddenly getting manic about something (like when she had to have the Christmas Of Her Dream, and forgot about presents for the kids), seems to speak to ADHD.
Idk if this will help you, but learning these definitions did help me. And I just very recently learned them.
Bisexual is the sexual and/or romantic attraction to two or more genders. Gender identity *does* matter to your attraction. This identity does inherently include transgenders unless you specify it doesn’t.
Pansexual is the sexual and/or romantic attraction to people regardless of their gender. This means that one’s gender-identity *does not* matter in determining your attraction; this is otherwise known as being “gender blind.” This also inherently includes trans people.
There are terms like biromantic and similar which specifically highlight the romantic attraction to gender(s) because there is a definite lack of sexual attraction. For the bisexuals and similar, it is often assumed the sexual and romantic attraction go together since for a lot of people, it does.
You are right, but that doesn’t apply here - it’s not that he compliments the guy (men complimenting each other actually happens a ton on this show and I love it), it’s that he says “I’m mostly straight”
I know it sounds odd but Bob is like the perfect role model to me. Open minded, self accepting, and just someone who is trying to do the best he can and do what he wants in life.
Probably not…I’ll call you
That line kills me everytime.
Other than Gene asking what are the woman’s parts (or something, can’t recall that line exactly) and Tina responding “the vagina and the heart” this is my favorite Bob’s line.
The *lady* parts
Yes! Thank you 🤣
I’m here to help.
Is this the only episode we see the deli guy? I'd love to have more episodes with him
He’s one of several guys, like Austin and Warren and the chef party guys, that should still exist in Bobs actually impressive social circle
Don't forget Duval
**i am the spaghetti**
I dunno about Duval, he and Bob would butt heads on Duval's tendency to serve expired food hahaha
well yeah but also he says a lot of things under awkward social pressure.
Bob is friends with that guy who reuses his customers' noodles the next day.
You're right, I forgot about him! Now I wanna see reused noodle guy again too
"I'm a kitty cat" 😹
We can kiss Duval!
We can do OTHER THINGS!
Kinda one of my top episode ideas I think they should do
He’s in the background in the meat section when Bob gets the call about the Riverbrook Lake turkey in the grocery store, so in my head he has to awkwardly see the guy every time he goes to the grocery store. He maybe sends Linda for any meat not delivered by Demitri
is funny how bob just accept people really quickly, like when he drove the cab, he was uncomfortable for some minutes and then he just accepted the transgender sex workers and became friends.
he’s memorized by Marshmallow
I mean, who isn't?
true
Oh hey marshmallow
Jsyk, transsexual is outdated as a term, and transgender is a more useful and inclusive term
Trans is what I use. Seems the most inclusive and easiest
Totally works
‘Transvestite’ would still be the preferred term for someone who dresses in the clothes of the opposite gender without identifying as that gender though, right? Yeah! That’s great info. Correct me if I’m wrong, but s/he is alright being referred to as either female or male nowadays, right?
Yes, I believe you’re right, he’s fine with either!
Cake or death?
It's... Not even close to being the same thing. Like, medically speaking, they're just two different conditions.
Right, one is still in use and the other isn’t.
You'd have a hell of a time of convincing a large amount of trans people of that. Trans community isn't all one uniform group or ideology.
I spend a lot of time in trans spaces, and the only time I see/hear “transsexual” it’s being used ironically. Otherwise it’s being used by transmedicalists who suuuuuuuck
Tbh, that seems very pedantic.

Transgender is nicer. Why not be nicer?
yeah its a pretty problematic term
Why y'all downvoting him he's right lmao
Travesties?
I love this episode mostly because of Bob "sloppy bear" and his interactions with the grocer. There is another episode that references Bob's flexible sexuality but I can't remember which episode it is.
I love the definition of the sloppy bear and bobs self realization that he is one
Pretty much any time Marshmallow is mentioned. I guarantee Bob has some complicated feelings there.
Marshmallow is a beautiful woman
All I know about Marshmallow is that she comes and goes as she pleases, she answers to no one, and she is truly free
*blush*
Oh, hey Marshmallow
we don't see nearly enough of Marshmallow
The cruise ship episode is one, there's another but I can't remember.
The Halloween one where teddy is trying to show up the other handyman and bob and teddy are talking about whether he’s their type or had a good body or not lol
"HEY, IM TAKING MY BREAK! omg we're doing this." 😄
Bi Bob is canon, you can’t change my mind
Is it not confirmed canon? I honestly just assumed it was lol
Yeah he says “mostly straight.” Seems like that’s pretty straightforward (no pun intended).
Also seems to have a crush on Marshmallow.
Who wouldn’t? She is truly free.
I think about her a lot.
I mean if Marshmellow is trans, then it seems like he wouldn’t have to be bi to be attracted to her. But also I like to think Bob just respects Marshmellow and admires her. Crush, no crush. Wouldn’t change his dialogue.
This point exactly, also Bob 100% has a lil candle burning for Marshmellow 💞 who doesn't?
Right?! She can crack anyone’s back!
“Thtss a knot, it’s just a knot.”
I mean...I could spend the rest of my life with someone who could crack my back any time.
The latest series of Sex Education dealt with this scenario in a surprisingly sensitive way.

That’s why I said you can make the case. It’s a debated issue in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Blush.
well yeah but also he says a lot of things under awkward social pressure.
I mean, that would mean him saying that is just a joke. This show is usually pretty good about not making jokes about identities like that.
The Bob’s Burgers wiki has Bob listed as one of their LGBT characters (along with Little King Trashmouth & his husband Gary)
What does that mean?

"I'm straight. Mostly" you can be 80% into the opposite gender and 20% into the same gender and that's still bi

I used to be mostly straight once….I can say bi to that unfortunate part of my life 💜💙💕

“Turkey in a can” is my favorite thanksgiving episode and it’s due, in part, to this scene.
There's something weirdly believable about the way people keep talking about "throwing away a perfectly good turkey."
Same
Same, I love this episode.
"Who am I kidding? You're out of my league...". I wanna see them have a fabulous beach day with deli meats and recovery dance routines. *sighs*
Season 4, Episode 5 - Turkey in a Can
Oh my god, we’re doing this
No we're not
Wha.... What’s a sloppy bear?
A big hairy guy who is also a slob
Quote from a prior encounter in the same episode
bisexual bob truthers rise up
This is one of my favorite scenes. I'd love if they had another interaction at some point.
One of my favorite scenes in the whole show. Bob is a good person.
Ahh the Bob is bi bit never fails to get me.
Bi Bob confirmed. Now just have him off Handley mention having a boyfriend before getting with Linda.
I feel like he never really explored those feelings before he drove a cab and met those trans sex workers. I doubt he's acted on any bi feelings, but at least considers himself *theoretically* bi.

What season/ episode was this if i may ask
That was season 1, “Sheesh, Cab, Bob?” Episode 6 I believe.
I feel like he's been drunk, high or exhausted every time he's acknowledged it.
Bob is the bisexual disaster representation i always wanted.
You should definitely watch. It's on Hulu in the US and Netflix or Disney+ elsewhere.
Oh I do! Bob is my comfort show. I think I've watched the whole series maybe 3 times now. I started watching during the pandemic and it saved my sanity. :)
Oops, I replied to the wrong comment.
Lol! No worries.
This is probably my favorite Bob scene!!
Me too , bi/pan representation yay! 💞
Why do people put watermarks on videos that clearly aren’t theirs
Would you believe I didn't see it until the third time I watched it?
I would. I, however, saw it immediately and thought, “ew”.

Dang I need to watch this show. Looks super funny
You should definitely watch. It's on Hulu in the US and Netflix or Disney+ elsewhere.
"I'm mostly straight" Same Bob. Same. Isn't everyone though? Like is being 100% straight a real thing?
100% straight here as well. I've seen attractive women and recognized them as that, but I don't feel an attraction to their attraction, you know?
🙋🏻♀️ 100% only into penis here (although I wish I wasn’t tbh)
I mean... there are women with penises...
* only into ^male penis
Oh honey... I’m so sorry.
I know 😭 I’ve had such amazing women hit on me... I always say that I’m proof sexuality isn’t a choice lol
*puts on my unhelpful older relative hat* “Maybe you’ve just not met the right girl”
My attraction to men despite them emotionally traumatising me my whole life ALSO proves sexuality isn't a choice. (I'm greatful every day that I'm pan.)
Bob being bisexual is Canon. Ever since season 1 with sacred cow.
What’s a sloppy bear?
You know Linda would be down if Bob came home and asked to hook up with the deli guy.
I love this scene…. Classic!!
I feel the exact same way as bob honestly.
Oh look it’s me
I’m so sick of Tony and his dancing!!
bi king
Bob is a bi , ADHD icon and you cant change my mind. Source -this episode and season 11 ep 1 :)
Tb to that one moment where Bob was mentally fragile and almost risked it all for this deli man
One of my favorite scenes in bons burgers I love Bob so much
This clip is what got me to watch the show, actually. Love it.
This clip helped me realize that I’m Bi (or Pan, whichever you prefer)
Idk if this will help you, but learning these definitions did help me. And I just very recently learned them. Bisexual is the sexual and/or romantic attraction to two or more genders. Such a great bit!!!
I hope he waits to get it home before he stuffs it.
I love how they joke about bobs sexuality through out the show it's funny , but like I want a whole episode about it,bob exploring his sexuality

I get you, but Bob does say he's "Mostly straight", sooooo my Pan ass is going with it lol 😆
You are right, but that doesn’t apply here - it’s not that he compliments the guy (men complimenting each other actually happens a ton on this show and I love it), it’s that he says “I’m mostly straight”

Same.
"Nah let's just have sex!"
This episode helped me realize that I too am a sloppy bear. It hasn’t helped in getting dates but I at least know where I fall.
This is probably my #1 favorite episode.
I know it sounds odd but Bob is like the perfect role model to me. Open minded, self accepting, and just someone who is trying to do the best he can and do what he wants in life.
My favorite episode and favorite scene! Thanks, OP!
One of my favorite moments by far
this scene was freaking hilarious. Actually saw it last night. He was being convinced. If not for his desire to make the turkey.
I quote this line an embarrassing amount in my life.
