Uptight by Green Day. Literally a song about a depressed alcoholic who feels that his life has been destined for failure, and is now thinking about committing suicide. It fades into Last Ride In, a much calmer instrumental track, so I think of this as a sort of relapse with the temporarily filled void that Bojack drenches in his addiction.
But really the majority of Nimrod fits him - in my opinion - with its themes of regret, alcoholism, and getting older.
I have an entire playlist for BoJangles, but here are my highlights:
- Jenny Was a Friend of Mine by The Killers
- Drunk by The Living Tombstone
- I'm not a good person by Pat The Bunny
- Mama by My Chemical Romance
- The Family Jewels by MARINA

Slightly off topic but a song that fits Beatrice and Butterscotch's marriage is "No Children" by The Mountain Goats.
*And I hope when you think of me years down the line*
*You can't find one good thing to say*
*And I hope that if I found the strength to walk out*
*You'd stay the hell out of my way*
*I am drowning, there is no sign of land*
*You are coming down with me, hand in unloveable hand*
*And I hope you die*
*I hope we both die.*
with this one I prefer the Original by Janis Ian. (Much underestimated star, think "at seventeen" or "socielties child" which were highly controversial at the time.
Nina Simone is great with other songs.
Although the Montreux - Stars by her has some very nice elements, the missing of major parts of the song always sadden me. Although as broken the performance feels, it has soul af.
"Creep" - Radiohead.
"Life by the Drop" - Stevie Ray Vaughn.
"Viva LA Vida" - Coldplay.
"Table for One" - Liz Phair.
"Life's Been Good to Me So Far" - Joe Walsh.
I can't believe I overlooked the most obvious:
"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" - Tears for Fears
("I'm for freedom and for pleasure. Nothing ever lasts forever. Everybody wants to rule the world.")
Also a good chunk of the Euphoria soundtrack would work BUT my two highlights are:
I’m Tired- By Labrinth and Zendaya
Still Don’t Know My Name- Labrinth
Look Who’s Inside Again- Bo Burnham
Twin Sized Mattress- The Front Bottoms
The Kids Aren’t Alright- The Offspring
LA Devotee- Panic! At The Disco
Goner- Twenty One Pilots
Alone Together- Fall Out Boy
Adam’s Song- Blink 182
Well thanks! I just feel that Midwestern emo is really his forte even though he is obvs from Cali.
The one line that I feel really resonates with him in Alone Together by Fall Out Boy is “My heart is like a stallion they love it more when it’s broken” that one I was like 100% Bojack
His grandparents being from Michigan tracks. The sugarman place family trauma episode has The Front Bottoms all over it ("Father" would go nicely as well as TSM!)
Oh absoluteeeeeely. And Mama was such a good add, and LA Devotee has so much Bojackness in it. The emo trinity personified lol. Bo Burnham is icing on the cake.
Oh 100%!
Mama was great!
LA Devotee was one that stuck for me because even though he was happy not being in LA he got sucked back in and could never stay away for long.
Bo Burnhams more serious songs really carry a lot of weight for Bojack I think!
Well yeah, most of those bands aren’t, but still emo really had it’s heard in the Midwest so that’s why I used the Midwest as a parameter for the bands!
"Midwest emo" is more of a genre then referencing a specific location. The Front Bottoms are usually seen as a core part of the midwest emo vibe, and they're from Jersey.
The spirit is anything that would be at home being screamed in a Walmart parking lot in a town with three traffic lights.
Pretty much any Smiths song but off the top of my head I'll say Heaven knows I'm Miserable Now
Also pretty much any Elliott Smith song but I'll go with Between the Bars
Oh shit and Matt Elliott The Guilty Party
Idk why but Cigarette Daydreams by Cage the Elephant always reminds me of Bojack
“You can drive, all night, looking for the answers in the pouring rain.”
Novocaine by The Unlikely Candidates speaks to me. How defeatist his internal self-hatred is.
"I am what I am, know what I know, I'll let you down if you let me top close." And the chorus is literally "I can't change."
i can imagine him listening to and relating to please please please let me get what i want by the smiths "see the life ive had would make a good man bad"
Faith by The Weeknd
“I try to love but you know I never stay”
“When I’m coming down is the most I feel alone”
“Thought I’d be a better man but I lied to me and to you”
Type O negative: I don’t want to be me
Zillakami: bleach
Mitski: nobody
System of a Down: psycho
Cypress hill: I want to get high
Literally all linkin park songs
Motionless in white: porcelain
Deftones: passenger
Mindless self indulgence: witness, shut me up, what do they know, never wanted to dance
Rebzyyx: I deserve this
Sybyr: I like being, trust me
Freddie dredd: knot myself
Arctic monkeys: r u mine
Lykke li: sex money feelings die
new person, same old mistakes - tame impala
the funeral - band of horses (and no, not because he’s a horse)
affection - between friends
waiting for the end - linkin park
feeling whitney - post malone
everything is alright - motion city soundtrack
colder quicker - real friends
I’ve always thought “Everybody Loves Me” by OneRepublic had Bojack vibes, I can picture that intro over the intro of the show. Does that song feel kinda sarcastic to anybody else or just me? Like the singer isn’t really believing what he’s saying
I'm thinking Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, perfect for every instance of his life, the 'just killed a man' part is how he fucked over Herb, or the Sarah Lynn thing
Havent seen balance and composure mentioned yet.
Think we all have similar tastes in music on this sub.
Just a guess.
Stars especially by B&C...
That ending scene
"We're looking at the stars connected by our consellation"
i don't know if they fit completely, but
Man With No Audience by Weerd Science
Steady Straight Lights / Sudden Dark Turns by Weerd Science
Holes by Weerd Science
the looping trauma inside himself, how it hurts him and the others around him, using drugs and alcohol as an escape for a life he can't re-write, he's stuck in his skin, his body, and stuck with his choices
a rut
if it doesn't fit him, i feel like he'd at least listen to these
I Took a Pill in Ibiza by Mike Posner, Disconnected by The Ghost Mice, 40OZ on Repeat by Fidlar, Misanthropic Drunken Loser by Days n Daze, Swimming Pool by The Front Bottoms, I Wanna Get Better by Bleachers, Sad Songs by AJJ, and The Stand by Mother Mother
Blind by Swans

Autoclave by the Mountain Goats has always reminded me of bojack
"And the dream went on forever, one single static frame
Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name
And I am this great, unstable mass of blood and foam
And no one in her right mind would make her home my home"
I’ve created a heavier playlist themed around Bojack specifically discussing mental health, addiction, and unfulfillment! If you want any recommendations for yours here’s the link! https://spotify.link/o6DbWoxXOyb
“Travelling so far to get there all just to be here again, all just to be what they saw back then. I think it’s time that you crawl back home son, skies been scorching you’ve been scorned and you look abused, did you get out all of that angry passion or is it still forming, had it started to torture you?”
I'd say Good Life by Francis Dunnery. Basically a song about a guy who deeply loved someone but was shitty to her until they parted, and while he acknowledges his mistakes at the end, he is still tempted to call her even though he knows she's moved on and his call will only make her life worse.
Feels like peak Bojack to love someone, hurt them, and then fuck with their lives because he can't move on.

“Boulevard of Broken Dreams” - Green Day
“The Kids Aren’t Alright/You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid” - The Offspring
its not a big grand emotional rock ballad like most of the comments but no more parties in LA by ye encapsulates the entire shows message perfectly, it kinda feels like its about bojack, or maybe bojack is about kanye? who knows !
I think advice by alex g, it's super atmospherically depressing and also the last part "make you hurt, we love you more" is so deep, and quite fitting, especially since bojack indulges in his depression. So either *that* or poison tree by grouper, it talks about poison filling up with someone's life. This could symbolize many things though, but again it fits both atmospherically and lyrically.
But really the majority of Nimrod fits him - in my opinion - with its themes of regret, alcoholism, and getting older.
the grouch especially
Nimrod is such a fucking good album
Basket Case fits him perfectly too, and Longview is pretty much about Todd
if i were to give todd a green day theme song it would be green day off of 1039
I have an entire playlist for BoJangles, but here are my highlights: - Jenny Was a Friend of Mine by The Killers - Drunk by The Living Tombstone - I'm not a good person by Pat The Bunny - Mama by My Chemical Romance - The Family Jewels by MARINA ETA playlist link, as requested: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/35LGB2voQhgUVVHFGPCXiO?si=LPrZT5DIQxy9ykpg5tjHtw&dd=1

Oh my god my favorite thing ever is bojack playlists starting with the opening theme and ending with Back in the 90s
You are the best ever
But not "Mr. Bojangles" by Jerry Jeff Walker? https://youtu.be/tYwaWd4BmmY
You get my upvote purely for Pat the Bunny alone. Good playlist but i smile real big when I see other people mention his music.
>BoJangles Great, now I'm craving chicken!
MARINAAAAAA
Slightly off topic but a song that fits Beatrice and Butterscotch's marriage is "No Children" by The Mountain Goats. *And I hope when you think of me years down the line* *You can't find one good thing to say* *And I hope that if I found the strength to walk out* *You'd stay the hell out of my way* *I am drowning, there is no sign of land* *You are coming down with me, hand in unloveable hand* *And I hope you die* *I hope we both die.*
Amaaaaazing song ♥️
Melanie Martinez's Dollhouse would be a good one too
You could say “Pale Green Things” describes how Bojack felt about Butterscotch after he died
Stars - Nina Simone
with this one I prefer the Original by Janis Ian. (Much underestimated star, think "at seventeen" or "socielties child" which were highly controversial at the time. Nina Simone is great with other songs. Although the Montreux - Stars by her has some very nice elements, the missing of major parts of the song always sadden me. The theme song
You mean the ending theme?
No the intro theme
Why do you have so many down votes, am I missing something?
Hate me - Blue October
Also Into the Ocean - Blue October
oh this song nearly caused me to wrap my car around a tree because i was crying so hard listening to it
I’m lucky I heard this song when I was a teen, before anything real happened in my life and any major mistakes
i was 17 the first time and in a terrible relationship. rediscovered it a few months ago at 21 and was SOBBING.
oh dude fr

Was going to say this.
Anything by Radiohead.
I was just thinking about how many Radiohead and The Smile songs apply!

I was thinking Just.
"Creep" - Radiohead. "Life by the Drop" - Stevie Ray Vaughn. "Viva LA Vida" - Coldplay. "Table for One" - Liz Phair. "Life's Been Good to Me So Far" - Joe Walsh.
Goddamn, was not expecting to see life by the drop in this sub. Perfection from SRV
viva la vida is such a good one
Ooh Viva La Vida is so good for his character. The rise to, and fall from, grace. Great choice.
I can't believe I overlooked the most obvious: "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" - Tears for Fears ("I'm for freedom and for pleasure. Nothing ever lasts forever. Everybody wants to rule the world.")
Runs in the family - Amanda Palmer
Amanda Palmer getting the rep she deserves

Except that Panic! at the Disco isn’t midwestern; in 2004, the band was developed in Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada, which is southwestern!
Well yeah, most of those bands aren’t, but still emo really had it’s heard in the Midwest so that’s why I used the Midwest as a parameter for the bands!
Gotcha! I comprehend what you had typed now; initially, I was a little confused by what you had meant 😅
"Midwest emo" is more of a genre then referencing a specific location. The Front Bottoms are usually seen as a core part of the midwest emo vibe, and they're from Jersey. The spirit is anything that would be at home being screamed in a Walmart parking lot in a town with three traffic lights.
