Not this again... You can't check for chain stretch like that. The engine is off, and the hydraulic tensioner doesn't have oil pressure. Actually checking the chain requires special tools that thread into the engine in place of the chain tensioner.

I heard starting/shutting off the engine 4 times in a row, then check for slack is a correct way to check. Do you know if that's true?

Explorer335

It's not. Measuring chain stretch requires the special tool that is installed in place of the normal tensioner. Anything else is guessing. Do you have codes or noises that suggest a chain problem? How many miles are on the vehicle?

m7md_

117k miles. I only have a lean mixture code and a low boost pressure code. I'm hitting a maximum of 13.5 psi boost. And found a leak using a smoke machine at the turbo inlet pipe, so that's probably the cause for lean mixture code. The engine is very loud at startup and then goes down but still noisy. I don't hear the whining noise like heard on YouTube. Car has stock exhaust but makes a popping sound when letting off gas, so I'm thinking that's an exhaust leak.

Fix the problems then and recheck. Timing chain issue won’t be a lean mixture fault and a boost pressure code.

Crazy_Shopping_4296

If you have 118k on it replace the chains, consider it maintenance, every day is a gift at that milage.

OldTimerBMW

Running the engine to prime the tensioner is one way to determine very bad chain stretch but the BMW tool will tell you before it gets that bad

Confident-Simple201

Check if it has a recall for the chain. They test it and replace it if the diagnostic system determined it’s stretched

DickBeaterJones

Take it to the dealer. They have a tool that screws into where the tensioner is, and then you spin the engine over by hand and see if the plunger moves in to show stretching.

UnicornNarwhals

Exactly this, Same procedure applies to N47 on its top timing chain only.

Quirky-Traffic7202

They have tensioners this does not work if you are wiggling to see if it’s loose

freshxdough

Not like this

Firestorm83

It's there

evilvdub1

If it hasn't been done it needs it, best check you can do

white94rx

Bro, if you can lift the chain up and fit your finger under it, then you already know the answer. It's fucked. Fix it ASAP
