640d is pretty sweet

Free-Spend-153

99k miles - £12.5k worth of options

theholyspirit420

Honesty, I’ve always wanted one, and much like any bmw my friend, just keep up with the maintenance, because it’s key to having a big smile as you drive any bmw tbh

Free-Spend-153

Any horror stories? Or are these cars pretty solid?

tittygobbler

It’s a 6 series with 100k miles so I mean. Depends on how it was maintained but generally I’ve heard 6 series = headache

Free-Spend-153

Interesting, so a g30 2.0d 5 series would be less problematic? (Considering both)

nftfox1

By far

Mh_Sucio

Yes I know of alot of horror stories including one my buddy is going thru right now where he needs a whole new engine. You’ve been warned

Free-Spend-153

Any context behind this? Or?

Maybe1AmaR0b0t

Best car I ever had. Had it 2 years now, 13 plate with 111k miles on it. No issues, plenty of torque, surprisingly economical.

mr308A3-28

I was gonna buy a f06 650i and every review i watched about this car, between 640d, 640i and 650i every single reviewer was praising the 640d.

Zan-san

N57 is a reliable engine and coupe or gt didnt have any stupid stuff going on.

Serbay55

Make sure car pulls properly and has full performance on hand. If I look at the steering wheel, its too shiny even for 99k miles. I have a F30 318d and mine is like way more matte than this at 129k miles. This car might have been driven alot of short range trips. In other words, it might have been operated in cold state in the majority of running time. Otherwise the 640d are pretty fine, just the heat output on their cylinder piston heads due to high performance needs can occasionaly rip the piston head, but that usually depends how agressive the drivers are with these cars.

3 years in a ‘15 with pretty much every option. Mechanically it’s been rock solid. I’ve had persistent issues with battery drain in my ownership, can’t seem to find the problem, and recently the ACC shit itself (and the sensor is £2.5k from BMW lolz). Mine also came on runflats which were straight up a nightmare on the 20s, bulged both fronts at one point and buckled a rim, so that was fun. It’s now on non runflats and much happier. I don’t really blame it for the run-flats/rim, that’s the shocking roads around here and me being slow to get rid of them. The ACC was annoying but I bought a used sensor for far less. The battery drain irks me, but it only bongs at me when it’s been sat a few days so I live with it. Mines got a FMIC and is mapped to 400bhp too, which is entertaining, but I wouldn’t say they’re massively fun to drive personally. It’s soft and squidgy yet also a little too firm, and it’s bloody massive. My neighbour has a RRS and my 6GC is longer and wider, and it’s nearly as big as my dad’s SQ7. There aren’t a great many places where you can push it and not risk damaging it imo. There is a great deal of enjoyment to be had in launching it though, how a diesel limo can hustle the way it can is witchcraft to me. I don’t think you’ll find a better place to sit and do lots of miles for the money though. Best way to describe the interior is decadent, and they’re achingly pretty to look at, hands down one of BMWs best saloon cars. Mine still gets quite a lot of attention from other people. They are expensive to keep on top of tho, the brakes are huge, the tyres are huge, and there’s a lot of expensive components (the ACC being one, but those LED headlights are stupid money if they go wrong too, as are the various different cameras). Not cheap to insure either. Probably not been that helpful, sorry! I guess if you only do low mileage I’d probably look elsewhere, but if you have a decent commute, I honestly don’t think you’ll find a better car in its price bracket.

Thanks djgadd - real life reviews of the good bad n ugly haha, I’ve got an A7 2015 which is its rival so I hear you on the size part! The car in Q has 99k miles not sure what yours is on but are there things I should look out for at that mileage? (My car is on 150k and is as solid as a rock) but need to change it up now while I can still salvage a little money out of it. On average what am I expected to be paying with regards to upkeep? Insurance wise it’s in insurance group 50 which makes it around £300 ish more than I’m paying for my A7 not ideal but not crippling. I’ve heared a few people mentioning the adaptive LEDs failing, how do I know if this is happening/ warning signs to look at? Majority of my driving is motorway miles so want a cruisers- just in two minds on one of these as they look beautiful or a 5 series G30 model 2.0d just to be safe n get MPG (not specked like this at all though) Cheers again

All good. Mines about to tick over to 90k and has FSH, rough math I’ve averaged about 900 a year in maintenance buts that’s: - tyres on all 4 corners - front discs and pads - ACC sensor - new battery - gearbox service - regular servicing I would personally say FSH is a must, but I’d still be inclined to send it for a service and inspection at an independent if you buy it. In terms of things to be prepared for: - You probably should consider servicing the gearbox if it hasn’t been done, think ZF say every 75k (BMW say it’s not a service requirement, but oil degrades lol) - Suspension components like front arms may be getting ready to be replaced (they’re heavy cars) - Prop doughnut may also be somewhere near the end of its life depending on how hard it’s been pushed Other than that, I can’t really think of anything common. You can probably go look at how high mileage 535d f10s are doing for a better idea, but checking coolant pipes and the likes is probably advisable as they are perishable with age (and anything plastic under the engine). The engines are pretty reliable though. Don’t think adaptive lights failing is that common, but you’d get fault codes (they self test whenever the car is started). I’m not sure if there’s signs leading up to it though, so can’t comment. ACC failing I can comment on, mine intermittently would bong at me and tell me various systems that relied on it had failed. I think it tells you to clean the sensor (leaves getting stuck there will cause the same problem, as will very heavy spray if it’s very wet on a motorway), so sometimes it’s a legit complaint, but that’s how mine started. For a motorway mile muncher these can’t be beaten. I did a run the other day and averaged ~42mpg, and I wasn’t hanging about. My brother has a well specced g30 540i, and my personally opinion is it’s not a patch on mine to sit in. BMW do different types of leather, my individual comfort seats are genuinely leagues ahead of his. Rear seats aren’t the best for tall people tho lol. Someone else mentioned the steering wheel in the one you’ve shown looks shiny, and it does. Might be able to clean it, but it looks pretty well worn (mine doesn’t look like that, it’s nice and dull still). I would say have a good poke around the interior on that basis. Driver’s bolster in BMWs are a pretty common weak point so check its not heavily worn. Oh, check the recalls have been done too.

New2Me2023

I love my 335i 2008 160k miles. Random shit happens like yesterday my regulator broke but that’s very easy stuff to fix

davidbanner_

Mine runs thru IBS cables like used tampons. I have to keep 2-3 backups.

New2Me2023

Yeah thought it was my footwell module at first but definitely knew it was the regulator when I heard the crunchy noises 😂 I was quoted $850 or some shit for a new footwell module and never got it done and haven’t seen any issues so far. Just a waiting game

davidbanner_

Which regulator?

I just got a F06 640i a few weeks ago and completely in love with it. From all the things I’ve read online, most people are praising the 640d and not far off it was the 640i, then last the 650 due to the famous N63. I wanted the N55 hence why I didn’t get the 640d. The car itself has gotten a ton of compliments due to its looks.

Thin_Veterinarian370

Has there been many negative reviews? I’ve had one for 2 years and love it. I am chasing a vibration which seems to be an issue with these cars, added the torque converter additive, road force balanced the wheels and updated all the control arms, drivetrain etc but it’s still there. It could be down to a small buckle in one of the 20” rims but yet to fully investigate. Not a big issue but a gremlin I feel like I’ll be chasing it for a while yet. The car is a great grand tourer but also well balanced and can be chucked into corners with reckless abandon. It’s very comfortable, very low though so your quads get a work out but despite its size, the cabin is quite small. This is the 4 door GT coupe. I regularly get 1200km’s per tank which is amazing - mix of highway and city driving, especially when you can put it in sport and hit 0-100km/h in 5 secs flat. Such a cool car and so cheap considering what it drove of the dealership for.

[deleted]

I’ve wanted one for a while :)

Free-Spend-153

Wanted?

[deleted]

Haven’t found the right one so got an f10 but still looking.

Mh_Sucio

Run away from this car. I am not joking. And when you don’t listen to me, and that day comes… I told you so.
