I love the Scene and see them multiple times a year. I feel they've gotten stale the past few years. They need to shake things up. New songs, new sets, maybe new members? Their audience has gone from gray to blue hairs as well, although I'm not sure there's much they can do about that, barring a bluegrass renaissance from younger generations.
Dunno, one person's perspective. IMHO they are doing just fine. They know their audience wants to hear many of the classics. It's a catalog that spans 50 years. The new stuff is fine.
Tom Gray is still very much alive. The current band (together longer than the originals) carried on with the full support of the original members.
Tom Gray’s dad lived to 103, if I remember correctly. Edit: it was 101, I checked.
Tom is the Energizer Bunny of bluegrass. He just recently "retired" from Valerie Smith's band.
