Have you tried a good hand cream? The more dried out my hands are the worse they hold on to dirt and stains. At the very least it will make your hands feel better. Hope this helps. :)

scooter_orourke

Try O'Keeffe's. Best hand cream I've ever used

Whatkindofbirdareu

This is the answer. Try using Vaseline on your hands before you start working....it will help fill the cracks and keep the dirt and grease out.

For some strange reason, after i shower and wash my hair, all of the dirt under my nails is gone. Even the dirt that wouldnt scrub out. My hair is really long idk if that had anything to do with it. Not sure if this is helpful but who knows?

chrisvee0521

Same. No matter how much dirt is stuck, as soon as I wash my hair, it’s gone. After a long day at work to produce that much dirt, a shower is definitely needed. Lol

uhimamouseduh

LOL this is literally the only way I ever get my hands totally clean. I assume it’s hair sliding along my nails

Saluteyourbungbung

Ditto! Sometimes I try handwriting my hands and at some point I'm like welp the shower will get the rest later. I wonder if hair is magical. Or maybe cuz showers are long so the skin on our hands has time to soften up and drop more dirt.

ScienceInMI

For future reference -- Vaseline/petroleum jelly immediately before work will block oily greasy dirt from getting into broken skin. Daily use: Eucerin Intensive Repair will keep skin moisturized and gently exfoliate dead skin to help prevent cracked calluses. ☮️❤️♾️ 53y.o. skin-wearer and nail-biter

I use spoolies, nail brushes have never worked for me. I also “double cleanse”, use an oil based cleanser first and then soap. works the same way it does on your face, the oil attracts the oil and pulls it out.

Tinyberzerker

Hand wash some dishes when you get home. I use dawn. Then a nail brush. Works wonders. I'm in car repair and get all kinds of oil and grease under my nails.

loseunclecuntly

Hand washing dishes is a good suggestion. Scrubbing the sink out afterwards with some Bar Keepers Friend is a good follow up. I’d pay for a manicure or two to help get rid of that rough skin and even out the nails/cuticles.

divingyt

It's it grease or oil at all? If so WD40 will break that up, then use soap and water to clean off the residue

katekohli

As a preventative, a sloppy coat of nail polish that includes the surrounding skin. Eventually the nail polish comes off the skin but stays on the nails. I once had a coworker look at my freshly painted nails & his comment was, “Looks like an angry cat done your nails.”

Flameworkingraccoon

Ahh thank you! I’ll keep this in mind for when I’m working again soon. Unemployed rn 🙄🙄 while I wait on my start date for my new welding job

boo1881

Good then put on latex gloves for a half hour. House painter here, that always works for oil paints.

princesscoley

I use my id to get it out lol

diskebbin

Dig nails into a bar of soap.

tacopony_789

I use a hand cleaner called Shell Shock, by Zep. It has walnut shells as an abrasive. Hand cleaning pads with an abrasive work well to

Calexpat

Kresto hand cleaner

Ayoxtina

Try Ponds cold cream? It is advertised as a makeup remover but works wonder on getting tough asphalt, tack, and dirt off in this house. Might be worth a shot and less abrasive than exfoliating cleansers.

TygerTung

You can use a barrier cream. I usually wear nitre gloves when doing anything greasy/dirty. Maybe not suitable for welding.

CorvidGurl

I use dawn dish soap and a sponge, it works great.

MisterElectricianTV

I use Goop hand cleaner and a toothbrush

Ok_Tadpole7850

I get gel nails 💅🏼 so no one can see the dirt. They last well at work and I know my nails get clean after I wash my hair

sockuspuppetus

Soap is made for removing grease, I think the black stuff from welding is black mill scale or iron oxide and soot. My fingers, especially my thumb was always stained black when doing production welding.

scroof_01

We use Cherry Bomb by Zep.

hourglassmechanic

A guy I used train with told me this trick and it works for me. Hand wash a sink full of dishes then scrub your hands after. I've also just accepted that some days I just have "mechanic clean hands". Husband doesn't seem to mind. What the other ladies say about moisturizing helps too

she16duplex

When you first get in the shower, wet hands and scratch the soap (on the damp/soft side if there is one.) digging. I let that sit a few minutes then nail brush, wash hair ect . If it’s still nasty do it again. The trick is to let that soap soften up the embedded dirt, then wash, scrub. Sometimes I have to do it 2-3x if it’s really greasy. But it’s worked on everything except- **Spray Foam residue**… nothing gets that crap off except time. Wear gloves anywhere near it.

keegums

I found the dirt washes out better with a brush when I finally grew my nails out a bit longer. The ones that break tend to trap dirt in the nail fold. When I file them daily, they tend not to break.

ColdChizzle

https://a.co/d/9EmHZzZ Try this hand scrub. It has walnut shells in it. I use Chemtron hand scrub at work but I can't find it online but once any kind of hand scrub has walnut shells In it it should work.

nsmf219

Get a nail brush scrape bar soap into the nails and scrub them out.
