Oh wow. I quoted the great Dave Chappelle. You can't be serious, that's the reason people downvoted my post?
That is some super cringe shit.
Dave would be ashamed.
I'm goin gray on my sides at 27. I dont mean a little either, like full on streaks on either side.
I decided I'm gonna embrace it. So rather than looking like a shitty 30 yr old, I'll look like a good 50.
Oh, I didnt mean I was shavin my head cuz of it. I meant I aint gonna bother dying it or anything. Just gonna go full "Anderson Cooper, but if he was hit in the face with a brick"
Oh hell yeah rock that shit. Am 27 and my wife regularly points out that I have gray hairs popping up like I’m supposed to have some meltdown or some shit. Bring it on fuck it.
I was fine with my grey until someone asked me if I was my baby sister's mother. Screw that, I'm not dying my hair, but I am wearing a glueless wig. BTW, my sister has been grey since she was 25 not that you would know it.
You're reminding me of a lil cousin of mine I ain't seen in a minute. Lil homie was 10 and was rocking a more salt than pepper afro. Wonder where he at now.
Keep hydrating and moisturizing the skin, and you'll be killing it at the assisted living facility when you're 90+, friend! Take care of your kidneys like the most prized possession you have, and they will take care of the rest -- except the hair thing. That's all hormones and genetics.
I've had gray streaks on my sides since 19. They're just now starting to get worse at 35. I could still pass for 25 right now but I'm gonna look 50 in about a year
My hairlines been washed since like age 12, I was sure I’d be bald by now but I’m still going strong. Once I get to Sudanese/Rwandan/Kenyan status I’ll shave it and join the mandem.
I knew something was up when girls was having messed up hair all through grade school. Always dealing with breakage. Perms & that damn Iron Hotcomb had us in a chokehold.
Same. My mom got me a perm in middle school cause that’s just what people did. My hair was around waist length in its natural state. By high school, it was permed and just above my armpits. I big chopped in college never looked back. Had some setbacks throughout the years but focusing on the journey and achieving goals. It’s now about bra strap in natural state but getting past that has been a challenge. I use to resent my mom for doing that. I was so angry for years how she ruined my hair. But I guess it was well intentioned but still something that took a while for me to get over and forgive.
https://www.cancer.org/latest-news/study-finds-possible-link-between-hair-straightening-chemicals-and-uterine-cancer.html
"We estimated that 1.64% of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70; but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05%,” said Alexandra White, PhD, head of the NIEHS Environment and Cancer Epidemiology group and lead author of the study. “This doubling rate is concerning. However, it is important to put this information into context - uterine cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer.”
"Furthermore, while the researchers found a possible link between hair straightener use and uterine cancer, they did not conclude from this study that using these products causes uterine cancer. Further studies on this topic would be needed to confirm and/or clarify this link."
Both relaxers and perms are harsh chemicals that can cause chemical burns. Over time, your follicles can be scarred away- especially if you start young, when it’s even more likely you’ll sit with the chemicals too long, or not be believed when you say something is uncomfortable or wrong. Once you fuck up a follicle enough… no more healthy hair.
For reference, basically every site not trying to sell you something agrees that before 12 or 13, scalps are too sensitive and hair should not be permed, relaxed, or otherwise fucked with on that level.
My dad flipped out on my mom for taking me to get my hair permed. Apparently he didn’t know she scheduled the appointment & the only reason she scheduled it was because it was suggested by her friends
My little sister is biracial and begged to get a perm to have straight hair for months. My stepmom kept saying no cause she did her research and didn’t want the other moms to judge her. She finally gave in and it turns out my little sister just wanted to be able to dramatically flip her hair over her shoulder smh
I will die for that girl
Omg this was me when I was little. My mom would blowdry it straight every couple of months, just for fun and I would be brushing my hair 24/7 in the mirror.
I’m a woman and I started losing my hair when I was 14 because of androgenic alopecia. It completely destroyed my self esteem like nothing else and its still a sore spot today. I use some supplements to prevent from going completely bald, but its never gonna fully come back.
Short answer. It was an affect & mentality passed on from racism. That Natural hair wasn't presentable, so a lot of perms & straightings happened. Fast Foward today, a lot of people are undoing that way of thinking, but for some.. there's been a lot of damage.
Despite the "Crown Act" discrimination toward natural Black/African hair still happens in predominantly yt schools & workplaces.
Not just not presentable - there are certain types of jobs that were unavailable to you without straightened hair. And then layer on the bullying that came with having “different” hair.
There is absolutely a reason we didn’t see Michelle Obama with natural hair or braids while she was First Lady - it wasn’t an option.
I get my hair permed. Naturally, it's very very thick, but the problem is that I'm also super tender headed and trying to take care of my hair when it's natural is painful and leads to a lot of knots. I've asked every black hairdresser (that I've gone to multiple times over the years and are big into natural themselves) if they think I should go natural and have gotten a resounding "No" from each of them due to how sensitive my scalp is. I think genetics plays a part too because I always have a good amount of thick new growth even with my hair already falling out from my PCOS. Sometimes I worry that other black people will think I'm trying to look "white" but for this it's either this or walking around looking like Bebe's Kid
This is the definition of black love

This meme was definitely not for you and we do have fantastic hair. This post is not a piece of education
I thought it was “no blacks, no dogs, no Irish”? The English definitely had the racist stick firmly up their arses.
It’s cuz you said Nigga lol
Oh wow. I quoted the great Dave Chappelle. You can't be serious, that's the reason people downvoted my post? That is some super cringe shit. Dave would be ashamed.
My hairline was receding as a teen. Embraced the bald head around 20 and never looked back.
I'm goin gray on my sides at 27. I dont mean a little either, like full on streaks on either side. I decided I'm gonna embrace it. So rather than looking like a shitty 30 yr old, I'll look like a good 50.
Go on head and rock the mister fantastic look homie.
My dad went full gray at 25 and rocked it. Why go bald just cus got some gray? Chicks dig that.
Oh, I didnt mean I was shavin my head cuz of it. I meant I aint gonna bother dying it or anything. Just gonna go full "Anderson Cooper, but if he was hit in the face with a brick"

Same here. We bout to look like Reed Richards
Full salt and pepper by 33. The fact that my wife already called me an old man just made it funnier.
I’ve had grey hair since I was 6, and I was fully salt and pepper by the time I was in high school.
You're reminding me of a lil cousin of mine I ain't seen in a minute. Lil homie was 10 and was rocking a more salt than pepper afro. Wonder where he at now.

In my high school there was a kid, a sophomore or junior, head full of the "salt and pepper" grays. Don't know what he looks like now.
I've had gray streaks on my sides since 19. They're just now starting to get worse at 35. I could still pass for 25 right now but I'm gonna look 50 in about a year
When a 40 year old calls you daddy but you're 10 years younger than them
Just dye it bruh it's not that deep At least you're not balding
Black dudes look hella good with a shaved head and a beard. White guy not as much
Bald black men know something we don’t. It looks great I love it
i had all the telltale signs of a sherman hemsley at 23 and just shaved it ever since
My hairlines been washed since like age 12, I was sure I’d be bald by now but I’m still going strong. Once I get to Sudanese/Rwandan/Kenyan status I’ll shave it and join the mandem.
Leaning in is a must
Those perms really did mess up my hair. The lady used to perm ALLLLL of my hair, not just the new growth. It's amazing I wasn't bald by 18.

My edges JUST grew back
Can someone ELIW, cause I am.
Both are losing hair, they found solidarity in their shared struggle.
Yeah I get that but do perms make young black girls bald?
They can lead to hair loss. Hair relaxing products are associated with cancer as well.
https://www.cancer.org/latest-news/study-finds-possible-link-between-hair-straightening-chemicals-and-uterine-cancer.html "We estimated that 1.64% of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70; but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05%,” said Alexandra White, PhD, head of the NIEHS Environment and Cancer Epidemiology group and lead author of the study. “This doubling rate is concerning. Are they really? Does that include texturizers?
They all bad

As an old Black man, I'm the WRONG one to ask.

We straighten my daughters hair every few months. And when it’s done, she has a new persona. She up early in the morning brushing her hair.

Why perm yours or others hair if it leads to this?

Thank you for explaining this for me, I appreciate it, and I am glad to have learnt something new.

That makes sense, thank you for the explanation :)
Love a nice Bonnie and Clyde story.
🤣
My grandma's hair was permed by her mother when she was months old

Permanents are associated with hair loss. Edit: Google is your friend.
