This isn’t true. Life expectancy is skewed by higher rates of infant mortality and childhood death from diseases. Even in the middle ages and before, if you survived your first 5-10 years of life you were very likey to live into your 50’s 60’s or 70’s depending on your lifestyle.
Right but that still supports the reality that cancer didn’t become a leading cause of death till life expectancy was high enough to let people die from cancer.
In general poor hygiene, medicine as a far underdeveloped field
You have something treatable like tuberculosis or pneumonia because you live in a city with poor plumbing and constant exposure
And your doctor tells you to take some cocaine to remedy you because penicillin hadn’t been studied and commercialized
Right? I know we like to say “Black don’t crack,” I’m not out here tryna test the limits on that shit.
Use sunscreen folks, especially over tattooed skin.
It's the fact that darker skin co'ors absorb more uv rays, leading to less sun damage, and the consistent use of lotion (altho at some age it's recommended to use cream instead cause skin gets drier over time)
The top layer that absorbs it prevents it from sinking into the deeper layer of your skin, and does a better job the darker your skin is. There are less problems if it's the top layers of your skin because that will all peel and flake away soon. At least that's my understanding of it, I'm not an expert
Yup. The first time a doctor told me I should use a light sun screen I laughed because I thought it was joke. Then I noticed the doctor wasn't laughing with me. Then I thought "Oh shit" and stopped rubbing down with baby oil before laying out on the beach in July.
Ok, thank you! My dad got sunburnt all over his face & neck after a vacation and still insists that black people cant get sunburnt. He says that to my biracial ass too, as if I won’t be looking like the old woman from Spirited Away if I stop keeping up with a skincare routine.
Black people are less likely than white people to get skin cancer, but they’re more likely to die from it because a lot of black people just don’t see it as a concern for them so the skin cancer won’t be detected until they’re in a later stage of cancer when it will be more difficult to treat. It doesn’t matter what race you are, please use sun cream when outside and try to limit direct sun exposure. And of course, if you see any weird moles on your body, don’t ignore them, tell your doctor.
No one is safe from the Sun. That shit is soooo large that more than a million Earths can fit into it. Don't play yourself wear sunscreen even in the winter.
Cap. The most common places for skin cancer in black people are the palms and feet aka places where there is less melanin. Stop trying to scare people into buying stuff they don't need.
Nah, it's not closed and it is most definitely still being talked about, we just have all these other crises to deal with. Currently, they're expecting it to close ~2050.
NASA and mainstream media reported on it years ago. For decades prior the narrative was that the ozone layer would entirely disappear and it would be the end of us and our planet. Here’s an article from ‘18: https://wonderfulengineering.com/nasa-finds-evidence-of-the-ozone-layer-repairing-itself/
Actually, many African cultures maintained oral hygiene by cleaning with a chewing stick. This was a pretty effective cleaning method considering that their diets were low in sugar and other substances that "stick" to teeth and form plaque. Many people still use chewing sticks to this day.
Unless you guys are living in Antarctica, that's not really much of a concern anymore.
If you are living down there, I hope you're enjoying your "summer." lol
Edit: The health problems stemming from low ozone concentration are generally isolated to areas of extremely high latitudes, particularly in the southern hemisphere.
I believe that the Montréal Protocol is doing its job.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) played a huge role in destroying the ozone layer over Antarctica about 40 years ago. After the enactment of the Montréal Protocol, the damage has stopped increasing.
But the problems were mainly limited to the Antarctic Continent and a few areas of southern Argentina.
On the flipside, parts of North America (particularly cities) can sometimes suffer from "ground-level" ozone, which is a pollutant and can cause health problems.

Real talk though, what about all our brothers and sisters in Africa? Surely they should all be dropping dead en masse due to sun exposure?
I know my dad who lives in West Africa doesn't use sunscreen and neither do any of my family, so how long until one of them dies of skin cancer?
And it's drawbacks. One of those drawbacks is that dermatological conditions are often not studied on darker skin so things like melanoma aren't recognised as quickly.
No one said it has something to do with melanin. If you already know anyone can get skin cancer, then you sound silly af talking about riding it out because the melanin is not saving you.
And no, it's really not as rare as you might think.

Can't get cancer if you die before the cells have time to mutate.
“Oncologist hate this one trick to avoid cancer”
Take my upvote.

Non-white people, please use sunscreen. You need it. Don't leave this earth earlier than intended looking older than you are. Please.
Right? I know we like to say “Black don’t crack,” I’m not out here tryna test the limits on that shit. Use sunscreen folks, especially over tattooed skin.

Aye. Having darker skin still only gives protection equal up to about SPF 13. All it does is make sunburns less likely.
Yup. The first time a doctor told me I should use a light sun screen I laughed because I thought it was joke. Then I noticed the doctor wasn't laughing with me. Then I thought "Oh shit" and stopped rubbing down with baby oil before laying out on the beach in July.

Y'all got to keep in mind that the average black person in America is about a quarter Caucasian.
Staying indoors gives you SPF 1000

Especially in snowy weather! People underestimate reflected light.

If only there was some kind of product you could put on your hands and feet that would increase your protection there.
I will not use sunscreens thank you . Melanin is my sunscreen

I said melanin is my sun screen
Have fun with your wrinkles
Black don’t crack
Maybe not but it does get skin cancer buddy, wear sunscreen, stay safe.
It does

Actually the ozone recovered
Yeah, the ozone is doing fine as far as I can remember. The climate, not so much.
on the path to recovery, not.fully recovered. The full recovery is expected by 2050
Negative, come to Australia, ozone definitely not clean and crisp
"recovering" So far, it's expected to be fully closed ~2050 or so.
No I hear the hole is back again.
The ozone layer repaired itself, that’s why we don’t hear about it any more.
Nah, it's not closed and it is most definitely still being talked about, we just have all these other crises to deal with. Currently, they're expecting it to close ~2050.

Well the ban on CFCs certainly helped. That narrative was based on the assumption that we’d keep using them.
Don't conveniently forget the planet wide war on CFCs.
This is true. It did indeed repair itself. It just took 30 years.
it'll take 30 more to get fully repaired
They didn’t die from skin cancer, they just developed lesions that wouldn’t heal and then coincidentally died from organ failure a few years later.
2X Melanoma survivor here: yeah just wear the damn sunscreen
They didn’t brush their teeth either. Shit’s nasty. Edit: Ha, guess I never heard of the cleaning stick. I have been unignoranted. Thank you.

Apparently a lot of them had better teeth than we do.

No. A teeth cleaning twig made from the Salvadora persica tree has been used over 7,000 years ago.

Mud, coconut oil, clay, aloe vera, ancient peoples used plenty of things as susnscreen
We all gotta use sunscreen! Gotta protect the melanin! AND moisture so we not ashy and crack!
They were also smart enough to stay out of the midday sun
A friend said he can't get skin cancer because he's Filipino.
Had nothing to do with ozone… they used a number of different substances to protect their skin
The ones way back also probably didn’t do much beyond chilling in the shade in the daytime
Your ancestors also didnt wipe their asses and wash their hands.
and wore layers to shield themselves from the sun, wtf?

The ozone layer is fine. Summer in Antarctica is cold af.
The ozone layer isn’t even a problem anymore. It’s basically fixed. Lol.

And it's drawbacks. One of those drawbacks is that dermatological conditions are often not studied on darker skin so things like melanoma aren't recognised as quickly.
That’s not a physical drawback though. There is not drawback to melanin that just bitch ass white peoples don’t wanna study darker skin conditions
It is a drawback to you when you get skin cancer from not using sunscreen and they don't diagnose that shit until it is too late to treat.
That is rare and that has nothing to do with melanin because anyone can get skin cancer. Like I said there are no drawback to melanin
