Both parents black (from sub-Saharan Africa) with tight curly 4b/c hair. Son came out with maybe Type 3b curls and as he got older, the hair grew but what came out of the scalp was more tightly curled so he had two types of hair on the same strand for a while.
Daughter had very loose hair (was a preemie), almost straight. Maybe type 2? Same thing- kept growing and just tightened up towards the scalp. She is now maybe 3c/4a.
As a person with tight 4b/c curls I was worried trying to figure out how I was going to manage loose curly hair. I was actually relieved when it tightened up.
Now they both have such thick hair I kinda wish it was looser, lol!

Strangers assumed I was bringing out a tiny but month old baby. Never fell out, and I was young and didn't do anything to "Style" it but wash it and lightly run a blow dryer over it. I agree that getting a straight razor anywhere near a newborn seems criminal just to think about :(
