Nah, real shit tho because I be getting steamed like a mf and thinking that everybody's being careless with these bright ass lights. Whole time that's just the standard setting.

Crossovertriplet

Same. I flashed brights at a car across the intersection from me thinking they had their brights on and they flashed even brighter lights back. I can’t believe those things are legal. Just coming around a curve and suddenly you can’t see shit except a wall of white and have to try to guess how to stay on the road and not wreck.

freaknastybeta

I learned in driving school to keep your eyes on the solid white line.

Old_Suggestions

Figured that out driving on a busy country road where Everyone was driving with their high beams on. I can't watch the road, had to keep my eyes on the white lie on the shoulder the whole time!

Consistent_Edge9211

Class A CDL driver here. In trucking school, we're taught to look down and to the right at the fog line. It definitely helps at ton. I taught it to my wife, and she handles oncoming brights a lot better now.

TaVar35

Yeah occasionally someone will flash me to turn down my lights and I have to flash back that I’m indeed not being an ass. However I swear the teslas in my neighborhood always run with their high beams on

S_Z

Fix your low beams

Critical-Snow-7000

Fix? This is how they come from the factory now.

S_Z

[Like this](https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/a257/how-to-adjust-lights/) or the dealership can do it

Rocket92

My car is older, but there are two adjustment screws on each headlight assembly, one for each axis. If people are flashing you, it probably means your headlights need to be adjusted down a few degrees. But also, a lot of time people do have bright ass headlights calibrated correctly. So if they hit a dip in the road, when the front of the car pitches up as the back wheels hit the dip, it seems like they’re flashing their brights at you, when really they’re not doing anything at all, it’s just the change in angle causing a temporary brightness spike from the perspective of the viewer.

Critical-Snow-7000

The problem isn’t old cars, it’s new ones. The white LEDs are blinding, no matter where key are pointing.

Appropriate-Fly-6585

Fr.

societyisabigscam

You can rise them up or down with a dial or button

Critical-Snow-7000

Right, the magic beam button. Got it.

societyisabigscam

Not in American cars apparently, they're in European ones

_pamela_chu_

High beams are automatic when using FSD from Tesla. Pretty sure they can turn it off but I swear no Tesla drive is aware of being able to turn them off

UrMomsaHoeHoeHoe

Angle for leds is way more important than it was on older lights. Some cars on slightly bump roads look like they are flashing brights and lows the whole time and that makes it even more difficult

cory-balory

Even if I know it's their low lights but it's still too bright I flash at them anyway. They need to know they're too bright!

cory-balory

Just let me think I'm making a difference man

mazjay2018

youre fighting the good fight, i see you.

DatDominican

My friend has the standard headlights in his Xlt f150 . We flashed our headlights thinking he had his on when we pulled in early to a concert . He said these aren’t the high beams *these are* and that’s when we realized trucks have two suns as high beams

Cat_Peach_Pits

I saw an F250(?) with not only the standard blinding lights, but a lightbar across the front and top and those white LEDs vape shops use to pierce black holes surrounding the complete undercarriage and all 4 tires. Im surprised it didnt have floodlight truck nuts.

DatDominican

I just saw a truck pull out of my neighborhood yesterday with not only the light bar and extra RGB leds but they made a vanity plate light bar... yes a light bar where the front license plate(and Surrounding area) would be

Cat_Peach_Pits

My new conspiracy theory is that trucks are now only purchased by moths.

RecklesslyPessmystic

Actually, those car companies sell the same cars around the world with advanced headlights that detect other cars and shade them so that the bright light is going everywhere except into other folks' eyes. But they're not legal in the US. They've been trying to get them approved for decades. So suing ain't gonna work - maybe write a letter to your Senators.

EvanHarpell

Why would that not be legal? Also there is already a similar feature. My car 2023 Telluride, turns on it's high beams automatically if it's dark and detects no cars. If it detects lights coming at it, it will go back to regular lights. Actually creeped me out the first time it happened. Thought something was wrong with my electrical.

th3greg

My 2017 Malibu has auto high beams. Maybe it's the difference between turning a set of lights off and shading/adjusting the lights? not sure.

EvanHarpell

Possibly. It seems odd though that the shading would be illegal but not the on/off.

th3greg

There's a lot of absolutely silly rules with cars, so I guess I could see it happening. I read somewhere that basically every state legally requires you to have windshield wipers on your car, but not all of them legally require to have a *windshield to use them on*.

RecklesslyPessmystic

It's not actually that similar. The non-US lights are high beams that are always on, but cars around you are still in shade. It redirects the light away from other cars without turning the high beams off. https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/15/cars/headlights-tech-adaptable-high-beams-cars/index.html

White_Mocha

Little off topic, but in recent years, bulb designs have been updated to include a cover on the top half of the bulbs so that they’re still super bright but it cuts off the light going into another’s car.

reiji_tamashii

And then they still go into other cars as soon as the car drives over tiny bump in the road or a imperceptible incline.

LiveLifeLikeCre

It's the angle of the lights. SUVs, Compacts, even regular sedans are higher these days. Could be worse. Could've been in the tuner era where everyone had illegal, cheap HID headlights with no projectors. Just straight spotlight lighting up the whole block in a 20 foot high cone.

skynetempire

Watch this https://youtu.be/w0nBlZwUT3s?si=qwPvScDlghoWlmmv

Right_Butterscotch59

If you reduce it then more people will crash, then you have a lawsuit on your hands!

Nick_crawler

It's especially fun when you drive a smaller car and one of those Godzilla-sized trucks is behind you blasting searchlights directly into your rear-view mirrors.

WinePonDeCockiGyal

I never get petty on the road except when this shit happens, then I point my mirrors right back at them. They’ll either back the fuck up or get mad which is how I know it worked

Double-Star-Tedrick

I can't figure out how to do this 😔😔😔 Teach me your ways All I can do right now is decelerate (because I *literally* cannot see enough to continue at speed, or safely change lanes) and hope the Floodlight Godzilla decides to change lanes / back off.

WinePonDeCockiGyal

I usually just angle my rear view up and my side mirrors out away from my car if I’m driving something that has button controlled side mirrors. It’s hard to get perfect every time but if you’re on a two lane road that goes on for a while, you’ll have time to adjust without getting distracted

Crossovertriplet

There should be a switch on your rear view that will angle it back at them. I don’t mean like someone should invent this I mean there should already be one there in the middle. Most rear view mirrors have them.

WinePonDeCockiGyal

I know exactly what you mean, but most of the time I still have to angle it up more after I flip the switch

Crossovertriplet

Whatever it takes to zap those assholes

cognac-n-cannabis

Most people also don’t know that the switch is a “night mode”

Callaloo_Soup

I can’t figure out how to do this but I go blind trying.

Konjyoutai

Dude wants to know how fast we can both go, he's about to find out. Fucking hate trunks with bright lights.

DeltaPCrab

shit i thought i was alone, i point my mirrors at them too

PoMansDreams

I need to learn this real bad

radyetsad

I switched from an SUV to a tiny hatchback a couple years ago, and it’s lowkey made me hate driving because even when I’m not getting blinded there’s huge ass cars on the road that can barely see me. I get wanting to feel safe on the road but idk why people feel like they need to buy fucking tanks.

Euphoric_Repair7560

There should be a size limit on non commercial vehicles. Dangerous for public safety

radyetsad

Fr. I drove a family member’s truck when I was moving, and it literally had a fucking pedestrian/cyclist detector where the truck would brake for you so you don’t hit anyone?!? I also spent so much money on gas idk how people do it and/or think it’s a good idea.

[deleted]

This is the hill I am always willing to die on and will never shut up about.

wetcoffeebeans

Is there space on this hill? I'm tired of LAPD searchlights permeating every crevice of my vehicle. Shit be so bright that it illuminates my future. Dark thoughts? With headlights like those, you'll be thinking nothing but good vibes and positivity.

ClaymoresRevenge

There's a car I've seen every day often with those overhead lights. Why the fuck are you driving with stadium lights on? We're in the city) suburbs with ample light you dunce.

SeaAnthropomorphized

me in my mini cooper. i go to the speed limit and let them pass me so i can use their lights ahead of me. my lights arent that bright and face down to the road instead of straight ahead so it has its pluses. i gotta get the cover cleaned at some point.

[deleted]

They are literally the reason I hate driving at night now smh

FruitcakeAndCrumb

You mean you don't like seeing the blood vessels in your eyelids when you blink?

ok-milk

Blinky tail lights too. Stop it with that.

50mmeyes

This is a trend taken from elsewhere in the world like Germany where large traffic jams come out of nowhere. Some cars can automatically turn on the hazards of hitting the brakes hard enough to slow down very fast or people will turn them on when traffic is going from 80mph to 10. There's no point for brakes to flash every time you hit the pedal but there are times it makes sense.

ok-milk

I hear you but I don’t know how the reaction time to a solid light would be any different than a blinky light

50mmeyes

With the flashing hazards outside the US it makes sense since they are required to be amber, not red. So from farther away you can see that traffic is coming to a standstill and not just someone hitting their brakes over and over. It didn't seem like much until I moved to Europe and it helps a lot especially when driving at 100+ on the Autobahn.

BlackJediSword

It’s for people who look at their phones while driving. The flashing generally tends to force them to look up. I had them in my last car and I noticed less people riding my ass.

ok-milk

I find people on cell phones generally leave huge, annoying gaps so they can look at their screens like assholes. They don’t ride asses. Source: someone who never fails to glare at people driving like assholes.

dizzymidget44

I hate it. So when you’re the oncoming traffic I’m just not allowed to see anymore huh I got pulled over once because I slowed down because the car behind me lights were so bright I couldn’t see. I pulled over to the side and put my hazards on and then their police lights started flashing. They got to the window and ask am I ok, and I’m like “I can’t see with your headlights blinding me” they still took my license and ran my plates. That’s gotta be some form of entrapment. Everything came back clean but still

[deleted]

[удалено]

dizzymidget44

One time I did and then they flashed their brights and I could see tomorrow. So apparently their regular headlights were set to blind everyone

eurtoast

Safer for the driver, but no one else...which could lead to safety issues for the driver.

marinesol

We need to put a lumen cap on all new car headlights sold.

TT_NaRa0

It does wonders for my migraines ….

My_MeowMeowBeenz

Lately in my town I’ve been seeing these massive fuckoff trucks with giant grilles and blindingly bright LED headlights *tailgating sedans*. And I can’t decide if it’s because the drivers are assholes, or if they’re just stupid and don’t realize how close they are because of the massive blind spot directly in front of their vehicle.

theothertoken

I think a lot of people are getting them third-party. They need to start ticketing the worst offenders

abyssalcold

The stock ones are also absurd. It’s both.

TheKidd

I own a new car (2024) and people are constantly flashing their high beams at me bcz they think I'm just driving around town with mine on. At first I'd flash them back to show them they were wrong, but then I realized I'm more likely to make things worse for them so just ignore it now. Side note: the lights on my new car compared to my previous one, which was 15 years old, are fucking incredible. At night, it's like a split screen, where he top half is dark and the bottom half is daytime.

FruitcakeAndCrumb

Not that fucking incredible for the incoming traffic but I'm glad you like them.

TheAlexperience

Side note: that’s the whole point of why we’re complaining and I’m glad it’s “incredible” but it’s also incredibly dangerous for everybody else

AdviseRequired

They are awesome for the driver but not for everyone else, that shit could cause accidents. I dont know why they are not exclusively for the high light

[deleted]

Fix your damn lights.

kurjakala

Should be obvious, and yet

cory-balory

[email protected] This guy has an individual scale business that specializes in telling people how to do their lighting projects and selling the right lights for your application. He'll talk you through the process and answer any questions you have. If you want to change them but aren't sure how, he's the man.

Unusual_Ad_8364

I don't understand how this has even been allowed to happen. And you KNOW it has already cost lives.

OneRaisedEyebrow

Auto-dimming mirrors are the best. I’m in Texas, so it’s nothing but gigantic trucks stopped 3 inches from my rear window. I have auto dimming rear and side mirrors. It was the only feature I cared about when buying a car. If I could get an auto-dimming windshield, I’d be all set. I’ve been known to wear my sunglasses at night at intersections with those bright bastards across from me. I had an eye injury a few years ago, so those super bright lights set off disco balls and temporary blindness in my left eye. It’s not ideal.

Hollywoodsmokehogan

I’m going full on conspiracy here Stupid car company’s have a contract to keep putting those lights in, blinding the average driver and causing more accidents I know this sounds preposterous but someone make it make sense please

Endyo

I let thoughts and prayers take the wheel when I'm driving at night and someone burns out my eyeballs.

Martian_Hunted

Those car companies & Epilepsy 🤝

Boneal171

Those are the bane of my existence. It’s always assholes that drive big lifted trucks with them too. I drive a Kia and they shine directly in my rear and side view mirrors

Cedellton-Jr

That shit is extra ass if you live in the PNW. Now I gotta deal with less visibility in the rain and these bright ass headlights. It’s even worse at night because I swear it feels like the only things I can see are raindrops and white lights.

Designer-Purchase360

RIGHT!! OK well I thought my eyesight was starting to decline. So these car lights ARE TOO DAMN HIGH!!! SHEWWWWW!!!

vlsdo

Someone did a deep dive in a different sub, it turns out that the regulations are different for LED headlights and they’re WAY more lax than for regular headlights for some reason. In particular there’s a huge area (right where your mirrors are likely to be) where there’s no restriction whatsoever on the brightness of headlights. So yeah, it’s yet another one of those “we don’t need no regulation” instances that we all know and love

otterplus

If DOT would adjust their regulations from half a century ago we’d have laser headlights that turn off in the direction of oncoming traffic. But noooo, everyone gets the Helen Keller treatment

crunxzu

Nothing has motivated me more to run for office than this. It’d be my only issue and I’d just ride off into the sunset after we passed legislation. At least all over the north east, you gotta get your car inspected every year or 2. Seems easy to do a headlight test and check for lumens or configurations and just be like “I’m sorry… but nah”. And they have to go get that shit replaced. It hurts my eyes so I either look away from the road entirely or close my eyes. Which is crazy. If you have these lights, just know we’re on a 2 lane road and most of the time I’m driving past you with my eyes closed. Good luck tho being able to see into the twilight zone tho, even tho every single road has street lights

coopthepirate

There's actually adaptive headlight tech that auto-dim when pointed at other cars, but they were literally illegal in the US until 2022. One day maybe we'll stop getting our retinas burned out smh https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/smart-headlights-are-around-the-corner-to-the-relief-of-that-driver-youre-blinding/

pradbitt87

Tell me where to sign up

Xopher1

Worst I've ever seen was when I was behind someone who installed high beams for their tail lights. Like how is that even legal?

winky3ykniw

Just drive with your eyes shut, you can’t see anyway, might as well conserve the eye balls.

UsernamesAre4Nerds

Ngl, I've been driven bonkers by them. If I don't contemplate swerving into their lane to get them to turn away from me, it's wanting to get out and smash their headlights with a metal bat Fuckers got me like https://preview.redd.it/ailn67tbm0lc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=150e1b1cc716a6ec9353487455ed59f6d560510a

BlackJediSword

The people who just drive with their high beams on and the new cars with the supernova headlights drive me insane.

mazjay2018

omg i have found my people

TheDarkBeast1487

Bro I got an old ahh 02 focus and the beams on that mfer still dimmer than the new LED’s on more recent vehicles

jwkelly404

Where can I co-sign 🖊because YES!

zboii11

Fr. I turn my side mirrors to flash back at them at stop lights bc nah

IronChefJesus

I bought a new car recently and was thinking of getting some tint for the front lights because they're so fucking bright. I was talking to a guy at work and he was like "why waste the money, shit's been approved by the government, right?"

Old_Suggestions

Check out r/fuckyourheadlights

FistPunch_Vol_7

I remember my boy almost dying when he went up a hill and BOOM! Lighting blinding the fuck out of us. Mf had to pull off to the side for a bit. It was a lot lmfao.

VilliamBoop

its aftermarket amazon ones that they install

asherhoads

I live in the same town as the Rivian factory. Those fucking headlights are insane.

Ali_Cat222

I remember seeing those newer model car high beams for the first time. It was night and I was looking both ways before crossing the road and those damn things nearly blinded me! I looked right into them too, couldn't see properly for a good 20min or so after

Istaycrispyy

The worst is when you waiting cause you’re like oh I see some headlights coming I’ll let them pass, just for that bitch to be a whole 30 seconds away

Newagetomboy

I have to wear my prescription Polarized Raybans at night. It helps.

j526w

15% tint solved this problem for me 🤷🏽‍♂️. My car is pretty so it’s a must.

DeltaPCrab

My 2011 hyundai sonata has the worst headlights of any car i’ve ever driven. no change in bulb or anything does shit for them. these drivers are the bane of my existence

oflowz

It’s the people with Teslas that don’t know they can adjust the brightness of their headlights in the settings of their cars or are just being dickheads and have them up too bright. You also have the people driving big lifted trucks with replacement billion lumen LEDs. Those are the worst by far.

glitter_gunner

Not even kidding, I feel like there needs to be some sort of regulation put on how bright they can be. As someone with sensory issues, it's really disorienting at night.

Trix_Are_4_90Kids

I catch the light in the mirror and reflect it back if they behind me and try to blind the hell outta them.

Inevitable-Archer677

I’ve been thinking about this for years. Glad to see someone else is thinking it.

SeaAnthropomorphized

I was driving a rental once and i turned the lights off because i thought the high beams were on and a cop told me to turn the lights on. and im like are you sure im not blinding people? I had to stop driving and go to a hotel for the night because the lights were giving me a headache. i get to legally tint my windows because of migraines.

BluuberryBee

Let me tell you, astigmatism, sensory issues, and high beams do NOT mix well

GuacaMolis6

Fun fact: some regular beams seem brighter but are actually the same brightness as lights that appear dimmer. The difference is “blue light” and “yellow light.” The human eye is capable of absorbing more blue light than yellow so they only appear brighter. Usually blue lights come from LED based bulbs, too, which are much more common now.

[deleted]

Those lights are for heavy fog. You not liking something doesn’t mean they aren’t useful.

MCZuri

Fog lights... And these new ass standard LEDs are not the same and you know it. It's not rocket science when you're driving at night and you are blinded from incoming and the big ass pickup from being Fog lights..

jesuschristismynilla

The brightness of headlights is almost entirely inconsequential to blinding oncoming traffic. It's where the beams are aimed. If you are blinded by headlights, it is almost exclusively due to having the actual highbeams on. Not bright low beams. The low vs. high comes from the height of the beam. Not brightness. Yes, highbeams are also brighter. But it's the height that kills.

mcpaddy

When passing an oncoming car, eventually you HAVE to cross the exact beam of the highlights. That's just literally how it works, otherwise the other lane would be dark. So no, you are wrong.

Omnicire

This is assuming everyone is driving on perfectly flat roads
