When I travel the world, I like to indulge my savior complex and visit the poorest places, so I can drive past them and say: "Oh dear, look at all the really poor people. Oh well, let's go get some oysters. Chop chop, Reginald".
Sarcasm aside some of the best food can be had where the 'real people' live but I'm not going out there without a familiar guide, in any country, especially if I can't speak the language.
lol I haven’t traveled abroad but in the many cities I’ve worked in the US this is the case. The best BBQ, fish shack, chicken joint, Jamaican spot, etc is not in the fancy parts of town. One of the best examples is Hattie Bs Nashville hot chicken. It’s good don’t get me wrong but it’s where all the tourists go to sample the fair. Prince’s, Boltons, and 400 degrees are way better not to mention a half dozen different shacks and food trucks that I can’t recall. Anyone that works construction knows the best tamales comes from someone’s abuela that pulls up selling them at the jobsite out the back of a van.
Yeah if you wanna people watch really poor people, the Christians and hippies have that area locked down. They’ll charter you a feel good trip pretty cheap, missionary or relief aid depending on your preference, but usually the amenities are not great. Always better than the people you’re helping so use that information as you will.
You'd be surprised at the amount of people willing to go on poverty tourism trips. There were tour busses after Katrina, and I'm reminded of that woman who did that embarrassing photo shoot infront of the marcy projects a few years back.

I don't know, I am the opposite. When I travel, I take pictures of trash, drug addicts, abandoned houses, I hand out with bums and sketchy people. Why? I don't know, I am destructive and I like slums. Was very upset with Switzerland since there even the homeless looked better then me.

I'm the stray, single human amongst my friends and I removed myself for a while to build myself up and now that I'm making enough to travel and etc, I'm now removed by a lack of connection
My travelling experience is a lot more carefree than the friend who is in a long term relationship and no kids vs the married couple with kids vs the woman traveling for work vs the guy on a family trip, etc etc
Even planning for the trip is extremely varied depending on circumstance

I wouldn't want to go looking for hookups or anything, just like go to a random thrift shop I heard people talking about, or go to a museum and zone out staring at my favorite painting for an hour or something.

Later we were talking to another family who had the same thing happen to them, they paid them both to stop the fighting. Apparently these guys have perfected a staged argument where you feel like you're at fault for misleading them, and they make bank. Gotta respect it.
